Blimey.

TokyoSushi · 08/01/2020 18:48

Well, there we go then. Hardly a surprise really, it's not exactly gone well, they've had a dreadful time from the press, but they've not helped themselves at all either.

Good luck to them.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 08/01/2020 18:49

No surprises there.

Thisenglishlife · 08/01/2020 18:49

Can't say I blame them
After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity. We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.” - The Duke and Duchess of Sussex

StatisticallyChallenged · 08/01/2020 18:50

Not surprised, just surprised at the speed.

Prepare for them trying to monetise "Sussex Royal" in every way possible

BubblesBuddy · 08/01/2020 18:51

Lazy couple. Just leaving others to it. What a mega shambles. Told you so pages earlier. Take take take and little give!

StCharlotte · 08/01/2020 18:51

Well I hope the Daily Mail is proud of itself.

Breaking news: Harry and Meghan to step back as senior royals

BlingLoving · 08/01/2020 18:52

Of course, the announcement means nothing. They still have pateonages and will support queen. Sounds like main thing is that theh will stop getting public funds and start charging for stuff. Fair enough I say!!!

beanaseireann · 08/01/2020 18:52
Shock
BubblesBuddy · 08/01/2020 18:52

They just don’t really care about anyone or anything really. Just them and their pretend world of pleasure and no work. I bet the Queen is fuming. She understands duty.

queenofarles · 08/01/2020 18:54

How does it work? Will they quit their UK charities? And start supporting others? What happens to their UK homes?

I wish them luck in their next chapter. I bet it wasn’t an easy decision to make but maybe felt relief with it?

TheNavigator · 08/01/2020 18:54

From the evidence of some of the posts on this thread (many of which have been nasty but mild compared to the red tops), it is clear that this is a necessary step for them. It is pretty shameful how the press and some sections of the public have treated them and I don't blame them for saying enough is enough.

Parker231 · 08/01/2020 18:55

They are now minor members of the RF so not really an issue. RF needs streamlining each generation. It’s more important that they lead the life they want. I’d imagine they will continue to support their chosen charities. Not really a news item.

Abraid2 · 08/01/2020 18:57

Not a news item?

astralweaks · 08/01/2020 18:58

Well well. Considering Harry is an heir’s son and an heir’s brother, he really should consider himself as a senior Royal. Smacks of dereliction of duty, frankly.

whitershadeofpale · 08/01/2020 18:58

There’s lots of room for questions and criticism in that statement. ‘Working towards my being financially independent doesn’t really mean anything in terms of what the tax payer will fund, just that they’re likely to start engaging in commercial enterprises. Plus it’s debatable if they’re ‘senior royals anyway.

I feel very sorry for them in lots of ways and they have had a rough time at times, but this halfway house between being royals and being private citizens is likely to draw more criticism and scrutiny in the future I think.

astralweaks · 08/01/2020 18:59

Or perhaps a fit of pique.

Ericveis · 08/01/2020 18:59

Not a royalist, not normally a contributor to these threads .. all I can say is WELL DONE . Absolutely the right thing to do

MotherofPearl · 08/01/2020 19:00

I'm not surprised. They have really been driven to this by the press. I think it's a good move for them.

As for comments about 'take, take, take' and their 'pretend world of pleasure and no work' - I think this is a grotesque mis-characterisation of them and the situation. For one thing, they are saying that they now want to work to be financially independent.

Honestly, the sheer nastiness of people towards them - no wonder they are making this move.

eggandonion · 08/01/2020 19:01

What's going to happen to the lovely house, just completed? Will they have a kp apartment from now on? They aren't very good at pr, I agree that the queen will not be amused.
I also agree that the press have been awful to them, and don't blame them for stepping back.

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/01/2020 19:01

Oh that is a shame.

I bet the Queen is fuming.

I doubt she gives a fig.

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 08/01/2020 19:02

And still the attacks go on. I don’t think this would have been an easy decision for either of them to make but maybe they need to for their own well-being. Let’s wish them well in the future and hope for some fabulous outfits without the royal constraints.

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/01/2020 19:03

I've counted at least 3 other threads on MN about this already so perhaps let's stick to clothes on here and go to one of those to discuss this latest news.
