Re the purpose of their visit, apparently they were also there to view an exhibition by some indigenous artists and talk to people about "the partnership between Canada and the U.K."

People aren’t being picky when talking about tights. I think that’s unfair. It is winter. Bare legs look plain wrong unless you are in the Southern Hemisphere.

queenofarles · 07/01/2020 20:57

Dandelion I genuinely want to know how do they plan/organise things? Do they listen to their PR team or do things as they please?

Seriously this thank you visit is the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen.

QueenOfTheAndals · 07/01/2020 20:57

@CurlyWurlyTwirly it was reported by Hello. Although they're hardly high brow journalism, they aren't like the DM and generally don't make things up.

I think she looks lovely as usual (Meghan). I haven't scrutinised the photos but she always looks so pretty, smiley and engaged. I can't get too het up over the handholding - they're still newly-weds!

If I could choose anyone's legs in the world, I think it would have to be Kate's.

banivani · 07/01/2020 21:00

If Meghan skirt is Massimo Dutti like someone said above then it’s styled with a (massive) jumper on the website. But boots. I think boots are nice and symmetrical in the winter. The swede in me approves.

I think the British RF must be trying to find a new way to “be” with the public. The old Empire style won’t cut it, they need to be more, well, like the Scandinavians. But the Scandinavians have the advantage of more respectful press and the fact that no one really cares. That’s the biggest issue for people of a republican persuasion here - nobody cares strongly enough to join the struggle haha.

Did anyone (Lunde?) put up the adorable Christmas film of CPV and kids?

QueenOfTheAndals · 07/01/2020 21:01

@astralweaks if she'd been wearing a miniskirt or hot pants with sandals then I might see your point. But a skirt that's almost ankle length on a day when the temperature was mid-teens and you're used to Toronto's sub-zero temperatures? Doesn't bother me.

I like Sophie in Emilia Wickstead; the best.
There’s something about the proportions in early Wickstead dresses and the «sturdiness» of the fabric which seem to suit Our Soph.

(Later EW dresses just look clumsy and badlr proportioned. See Olivia Colman at the golden globes)

@banivani Interesting that you mention the respectful press. Sofia's past would've sent the British tabloids into meltdown!

I work in the centre of a large city and I see a large number of women wearing no tights throughout the year (even in Jan and Feb), mainly professional women too.

I think 90% of the comments on these threads are genuinely about the wearers clothes style etc. and not meant to be a personal criticism of the individual.
There's several posters here who have endlessly criticised for months, one has a username that is meant to take the p and another joined to start criticising a particular royal. Feel free to start any anti whichever royal member threads outside Style and Beauty.

hopeishere · 07/01/2020 21:05

I think in terms of PR they are all over the show. It does look a bit like K&W had loads of good publicity so they wanted some too.

I agree it does seem a bit "look at me, no don't, no do but not that way".

banivani · 07/01/2020 21:11

@QueenOfTheAndals yes, the vilification in Britain really is disgusting. It reflects very badly on the British public too since the papers get bought and read (yes yes we’re all guilty since the Fail has the best photos).

By the way, hadn’t we established that it’s some sort of royal trick to wear shoes a size too big, for comfort? Not that I completely understand why they’re not falling arse over tit with that. I wish they’d wear low pumps and set a trend!

PR it makes good sense to be all over the commonwealth now, I agree with PP. I think it must be hard to get your message out in the British media climate. And maybe they are not sure what the message is.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 07/01/2020 21:11

Hot pants, bare legs & sandals reminds me of nights out in Newcastle & Edinburgh in the depths of Winter!
There must be anti freeze in our Northern blood & Meghan must have some too Smile

frugalkitty · 07/01/2020 21:15

Curly that first picture you posted of Sophie is a lovely one, I don't think I've seen it before.

Another one who's very envious of Kate's legs.......and as someone who doesn't own a skirt, I can't get too worked up about the tights thing either.

AudacityOfHope · 07/01/2020 21:19

They absolutely don't look like they got up and put on whatever clothes were lying on the floor. Bit hyperbolic don't you think? Confused

TSSDNCOP · 07/01/2020 21:21

It was really warm in London today.

They did the PR for the day the wrong way round; smart money would’ve been to bring the press to the Hubb, make Canada House a trip to see the art as an extension of their Canada trio and press flesh as Commonwealth ambassadors.

VeniceBeach · 07/01/2020 21:23

@banivani I love the way the skirt is styled there!

I like the skirt and shoes a lot, and as much as I usually like tonal dressing I think a different colour and shape of jumper would’ve improved the outfit.

Close up of Meghan’s makeup – quite heavy on the eye and a slightly darker lip colour than we tend to see. I always wish we could know exactly what makeup is being worn as well as the clothes!

QueenOfTheAndals · 07/01/2020 21:25

@TracyBeakerSoYeah when I first moved to the UK I thought the women here must have very strong constitutions to stand outside in winter in those outfits. But then some of the women I worked with said they were the same as students as they didn't want to pay £2 to put their coats in the cloakroom. It isn't something I see often in London and when I do it's usually a hen party from out of town!

OP posts:
paradyning · 07/01/2020 21:29

I did think that there must be another reason for the visit other than 'thank you'. And so it seems. Everyone is so willing to jump straight down their necks

And the f'in tights. If she was wearing 10denier nude tights a la Kate, do you really think that would add warmth - to those who are so perplexed about this.

I agree there are a few newer posters who seem at odds with the warm, fluffy ethos of this thread.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 07/01/2020 21:32

That's true Queen & it's also annoying when there's nowhere to put your coat so you end up holding it. So it's easier to go out without one & you get used to the cold.

How ever I saw a woman at our outdoor ice skating rink wearing just a vest top with jeans on New Year's Eve! (We took the kids)
It was so cold that day it took a few hours for my nose to stop feeling cold.
Vest top woman must have been a robot!

QueenOfTheAndals · 07/01/2020 21:33

I like the way the skirt is styled with the oversized jumper in the photo @banivani posted but I can't blame Meghan for not wearing it like that!

OP posts:
QueenOfTheAndals · 07/01/2020 21:34

@TracyBeakerSoYeah come to think of it, there's a woman I occasionally see on Saturdays occasionally walking home wearing a pair of flip flops and shorts over her swimsuit and nothing else, regardless of the season!

OP posts:
CurlyWurlyTwirly · 07/01/2020 21:34

@frugalkitty

It’s an article about Sophie from Harper’s Bazaar in 2015

QueenOfTheAndals · 07/01/2020 21:35

Too many occasionallys!

Being middle aged now I go spare at youngsters here wearing converse runners, ankle socks or smaller, ankle baring jeans (ripped) and then big fuck off down coats. In -10. Looks so stupid. Assymetric! And I remember my mother giving out about young women in big jackets and only leggings on their nether half and me rolling my eyes internally and thinking she didn’t have a clue haha.
