Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18 Thread 19

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

@botemp I get why! That's the only product I've tried. Tomorrow I'm using up some kinky curly custard - I got a load of samples

botemp · 29/03/2020 20:15

Ooh let me know about the kinky curly, I'm interested in the leave in conditioner/conditioner it's supposed to be good for wavy fine hair as the latter. Potentially the shampoo too, but I'm unclear whether it's okay for regular use or it's a non sulfate clarifying shampoo.

OP posts:
ClientQueen · 29/03/2020 20:30

I absolutely love the Giovanni direct leave in, that's the lightest one I've ever found

thisenglishlife · 29/03/2020 20:57

Oh god, don't listen to Brad Mondo he's (allegedly) a major fraud and not a licensed hairdresser (or something to that accord).

True, but it is a good video for a DIY haircut.

SallieSallow · 30/03/2020 20:04

I’d never heard of Brad Mondo but that video did help thisenglishlife it was similar to the one I followed before so a good reminder. And I’ve lobbed off about four inches of frizz now so that’s a result Grin It’ll probably need a bit of a tidy up when Real Life resumes but it’s absolutely fine for now.

Tsmummy08 · 30/03/2020 21:52

Hi all

I'm looking at milder acids to use in the future... Has anyone tried Lactic acid or a PHA? Looking at The Inkey List or GOW.

Won't be doing any DIY hair cuts but is anyone else contemplating some DIY colouring?! I've got a couple of boxes of root touch up stuff as I was due to get them done this week. I'd just do my t-zone (not my snouty t-zone but the parting and around my face)!

ClientQueen · 30/03/2020 23:22

Kinky curly custard is on my hair! It's given a really nice crunchy cast so I'll see how it is in the morning when I scrunch it out

Tsmummy08 · 31/03/2020 14:46

@ClientQueen What were your thoughts on that new EL foundation? IIRC you tried it a while back?

ClientQueen · 31/03/2020 14:49

@Tsmummy08 I have a sample but haven't actually tried it yet! My makeup is packed away Sad as I have sacrificed my makeup table to work from home

Tsmummy08 · 31/03/2020 18:09

@ClientQueen - Noooooo! I'm sure your makeup has been sacrificed for a worthy cause Grin Best of luck!

botemp · 31/03/2020 18:26

How's the kinky curly out of the crunch Client? I'm Shock you've had to pack up your makeup. Although, I don't think I've worn anything beyond the occasional slick of mascara or lipstick for a video conference for over a month now but my relationship with makeup is not comparable to yours. Did you have withdrawal symptoms Grin

Tsm, biologique recherche is mostly pha but there's two forms of it so only have experience with the one BR used. Lactic is probably uninteresting (for now) as EU guidelines (which you're still adhering to for the moment as I understand it) have limited the concentration and pH of lactic acid which makes it pretty ineffective (and it was always quite mild to begin with).

SallieSallow · 31/03/2020 20:42

I’ve not worn any makeup since 17th March, unless you count tinted frezyderm on the rare occasions I’ve ventured outside for food shopping or exercise.

TsMummy I dye my own hair (though I’m not bothering right now as want to get an idea of how grey I actually am Shock) I use that Clairol root touch up but my ‘roots’ are usually just a few wiry whites that stick up around my hair line. I use L’Oréal Casting all over every few weeks as find my natural hair colour a bit dull/boring.

ClientQueen · 31/03/2020 20:43

It's really nice actually, I got good curls, I don't think it has much hold though
I know, I know. I made my sacrifice well known to my manager (who said he would play a tiny violin) HmmAngry
Worn makeup once since the 17th March Shock

ClientQueen · 31/03/2020 21:04

My poor makeup Sad

SallieSallow · 31/03/2020 21:33

SadSadSad Client

As a fairly regular home worker I already have a sit/stand office desk so no dressing table sacrifices being made here Grin
Though I was intending to have a good old sort out/declutter/purge of make up and skincare but work is really busy so not had time yet.

botemp · 31/03/2020 21:37

Oh your poor back Client, or is that just the angle but iirc dressing table height is lower than a standard work one.

Ah yes Sallie will this mean you will finally find the nuface?

OP posts:
ClientQueen · 31/03/2020 21:55

@botemp it's a tiny bit lower. I don't have a kitchen table as I have a high stool/table set so nowhere else to work. Have raised the laptop up and my dad has loaned me a dining chair which has a back at least! Having had a spinal op already I don't fancy another

SallieSallow · 31/03/2020 22:13

Yes be careful Client home working can absolutely wreck your back, when I started doing a regular 1-2 days a week I had to invest in the desk & I use a medicine ball to sit on rather than a chair, they’re better for your posture than a ‘bad’ chair if you have one/can order one/know someone who could do a doorstep drop?

I’d completely forgotten about the nuface Bo I’ll let you know if it turns up but I think it might be in storage with a load of my Mum’s stuff, and lord knows when I’ll be able to sort that out.

ClientQueen · 31/03/2020 22:29

I have an alternative chair if needed which is technically a patio one but v sturdy or I can swap to the high table
Trying to stand up a lot in between calls too which helps!

Tsmummy08 · 01/04/2020 11:14

Botemp For some reason I thought BR P50 was lactic - it always irritated my skin badly, perhaps acids are just not my thing...

I think the Timeless C was also more irritating than DE, annoying given the price points! I'm still on my very simple routine but feel my skin could do with a little exfoliation now (5 weeks this weekend, I think).

Sallie I've got proper dark roots unfortunately... I'm naturally dark brown but went copper/ginger 15 years ago and it's part of my identity now :)

thisenglishlife · 01/04/2020 14:05

The P50 ingredients are:

WATER,GLUCONOLACTONE, LACTIC ACID, GLYCERIN, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, NIACINAMIDE, CITRIC ACID, ETHOXYDIGLYCOL, MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE, MALIC ACID, VINEGAR, PHYTIC ACID, SALICYLIC ACID, HORSERADISH ROOT EXTRACT, COMMIPHORA MYRRHA RESIN EXTRACT, ARCTIUM LAPPA ROOT EXTRACT, RUMEX ACETOSA LEAF EXTRACT, MYRTUS COMMUNIS EXTRACT, ONION BULB EXTRACT, THYME FLOWER LEAF OIL, SULFUR, SORBITOL, PHENOXYETHANOL, SODIUM BENZOATE, POTASSIUM SORBATE.

The famous '1970' P50 formula is no longer sold in the EU, as phenol is now a banned ingredient. You can get it outside the EU though.

botemp · 01/04/2020 14:38

It contains both Tsm, but more PHA than lactic and its irritation factor is down to the low pH (same case with the Timeless CE ferulic). Have you ever tried the Dennis Gross pads, I'm not a fan of them for every day, as they're marketed, but they do the job as an occasional use, like once a week.

Client, look after your back. I know some offices will happily let you bring a proper chair home for the duration of WFH.

OP posts:
thisenglishlife · 01/04/2020 14:55

I like the Gross peels used occasionally too. Even if they were more gentle, they'd be too pricey for everyday usage! (£149 gets you 60 pads)

Tsmummy08 · 01/04/2020 17:03

I've always been put off by the price of the DG pads but wondered about whether they'd be a good option... will have a think, thanks Bo and TEL :)

ClientQueen · 01/04/2020 20:42

@botemp I will Smile I've actually used a high table today and stood up and it was much more comfy actually standing for 8hrs!
