Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18 Thread 19

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

It is! I remember someone saying once who will this palest shade even work for, it's like a ghost shade. Um, me Grin
I don't think it's mega pale, it doesn't seem to add any colour on me

cad186 · 26/03/2020 22:14

I've got the flawless filter too, I quite like it!

EnidButton · 26/03/2020 22:21

Brilliant, thank you both 😊 That colour will work on me too then Client. I fancy mixing a bit in with my Lancome if it'll work. Liking a more glowy look atm.

ClientQueen · 26/03/2020 22:34

Definitely mixes really well with anything to be honest. I wouldn't use it full strength all over as it's very glowy but mixed it works well
Need to clean my makeup brushes, I want to play with my new colourpop palette Grin

EnidButton · 27/03/2020 02:53

Fab! Thank you.

I cleaned all my brushes and sponges yesterday. Had a new cleaner to try. The Real Techniques one. Pretty good actually. Have previously only used soap and hibi scrub. They're much cleaner now.

Tsmummy08 · 27/03/2020 08:45

Another Flawless Filter lover here - I use number 3 in winter and 4 in summer, and I slap it on all over Grin Not sure that would work if you've got oily skin but for a dry old husk like me, it works well - bit of coverage and a lovely glow. I think A Model Recommends has a blog where she shows herself using it all over.

Outtheforest · 27/03/2020 08:49

Does anybody have any experience of Vichy 89 Hyaluronic acid moisturiser?
I was given a sample at the pharmacy last week and decided to try it this morning. It has soaked in wonderfully and my skin feels lovely to touch (yes I know we shouldn't be touching faces right now but I had to check).
Have done a bit of reading about hyaluronic acid and it seems people aren't convinced it is as magically as companies would have you believe but i'm not really after antiaging more just wondering if its likely to cause any problems

botemp · 27/03/2020 08:57

We're very big fans of Vichy Mineral 89 on here out, although, yes, agree that hyaluronic isn't all it's cracked up to be and the more complicated they make it the more irritating it can be to some when it's not really marked as an ingredient to be careful with. The Vichy is very simple and effective, if a bit pricey, but formula really is key and sometimes that's what you're paying for.

The flawless filter is the one product that I actually think is really special at CT (which is saying something as everything else has never lived up to the artificially whipped up hype) but I still won't buy anything from them on account of previous/ongoing conduct.

I've just read back that you mention moisturiser out, I didn't know that existed, I was talking about the serum in a glass bottle. Going to Google the moisturiser.

OP posts:
botemp · 27/03/2020 09:00

Sorry, I've googled now, ignore previous post, it's called booster here but in other markets it's called a moisturiser 🤷

Outtheforest · 27/03/2020 09:07

That's good to know Bo I just had a closer look and I think it is the serum from the UK website for some reason on the American site which I looked the sample up on it is under moisturiser.
Will use the rest of the sample up over the next few days to check I don't react and maybe take the plunge and invest if so

Outtheforest · 27/03/2020 09:11

Whoops cross post, I had assumed the Vichy stuff we get here would be UK market but maybe its American even though that makes no geographical sense

ClientQueen · 27/03/2020 09:44

Bare face today! I have frezyderm SPF on, forgot how much I liked this. Used it over a water based moisturiser and it went on my skin really nicely

vaz119 · 27/03/2020 11:19

cad I have 3 different nars foundations and Wear the same colour in all 3 of that helps (need more coverage than a tinted moisturiser so can't help with that)

enidI also love the ct flawless filter. Not life changing but definately perks my appearance up a bit if I'm looking a bit dull.. Very similar to becca backlight primer for my (and I prefer the tube of becca cause I can cut it open and get every last drop out)

vaz119 · 27/03/2020 11:21

I've recently swapped to la Roche posay lipikar baume AP+after needing just a bit more moisture than my cerave lotion... But I've just gone to buy another and can't find it!

Seems the replacement is AP+M?

Anyone know if it's the same/similar... The ingredients look similar

Got a wee sample a few weeks back of the bodyshop hemp overnight mask which has been great dabbed on only my most flaky bits

Pupsiecola · 27/03/2020 15:40

Hi all,

Itching for something new. Been a while. What do we think or Murad?

botemp · 27/03/2020 15:57

I'm not sure what the difference is, I suspect they'll have added something in, there a lot of focus on triple types of protection as the novelty, I think. There is still one bottle of the old AP+ on Notino if you desperately want the familiar one. Otherwise contact the LRP site, they'll often send over samples (in normal times).

Pupsie, I've never tried anything because it's almost all fragranced and I tend to treat cosmeceutical doctor fronted brands that don't really adhere to their own profession's basic principles with a heavy heap of scepticism. Also so expensive, they have an SPF very similar in formulation to Frezyderm (they had it way before Murad so a shameless copy) and it's really expensive for I think a half size bottle.

I was curious about Drunk Elephant's recent launch of hair and body products but was mostly left uninterested as the shampoo just looks like a very basic bland shampoo, ditto for the conditioner and body lotions but I am intrigued by the scalp exfoliator which uses acids which is pretty rare to find in haircare but I've been put off by the brand a few too many times. Biologique recherche has a similar product (it's just a variation of P50 but formulated with hair capillaries and scalp skin in mind), I'm probably better off getting that.

ClientQueen · 27/03/2020 16:00

@botemp I use childs farm shampoo the sensitive one and that has salicylic acid in for a reasonable price!
I like the murad revitalixir serum a lot
Fell into a shopping hole and have a pat mcgrath palette on order, reduced to £25

Pupsiecola · 27/03/2020 16:08

Thanks Bo. Yes, I looked some of the Murad products up on the INCI Decoder and saw the fragrances.

I use Phyto clarifying shampoo every couple of weeks. Not exfoliating but very good. I usually use it a couple of days before Elasticizer.

I don't use anything DE any more. Just RP'd the Timeless Vit C.

Have to say I like the Kate Somerville Goat Milk Cleanser and Moisturiser despite a bit of scent (in the cleanser). But my skin is fine with it.

botemp · 27/03/2020 16:13

A Pat McGrath order from her site in the time of Corona... I think we should start taking bets on what year that'll arrive 🤣

Yeah, salycilic is pretty common in anti dandruff shampoo but you don't really come across AHA and PHA in haircare, especially as standalone exfoliator products, both the DE and BR need to marinate a bit on your head. There are some apple cider vinegar based product lines but they're more chelating than scalp focused, I think.

OP posts:
ClientQueen · 27/03/2020 16:49

Definitely, I have an Apple cider vinegar conditioner that was a random TK maxx purchase and is good for the price. Giant pump bottle too
I tried the deva curl ultra defining gel today and not keen at all

NinnyNewName · 27/03/2020 16:51

Has anyone tried Curel?

thisenglishlife · 29/03/2020 17:43

@SallieSallow

What serums and boosters do posters on this thread like?

botemp · 29/03/2020 18:23

Oh god, don't listen to Brad Mondo he's (allegedly) a major fraud and not a licensed hairdresser (or something to that accord).

Ninny, I've not tried Curel but I do like the look of it, it's a bit like a Japanese version of Cerave with the ceramides focus and avoids the common irritants. Definitely interested to hear if you like it if you try it.

English, the only thing I use that would qualify as a serum is my Vitamin C serum. I have a hyaluronic serum but I only use that when I need it, which isn't that often, a few days a month, if that (depends on the time of year).

Client, I'm properly terrified of Devacurl. I continued using the wavemaker occasionally once the scandal hit but I've now started having unexplained hair loss. It may just be down to being cooped up indoors and/or hormones but I'm going to stop using it for a bit just to see if it persists.
