Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18 Thread 19

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Bani, are you in a soft water area by chance, it may just be too gentle in that scenario?

Client, just stay away from the fude brushes sub Reddit, it's lethal to the finances. I only ever dare peek in occasionally if I'm in need of something.

Karcheer, yes, stinging seems to be a common complaint with Cerave, hence why I'm careful not to recommend it to people with very sensitive skin/impaired barriers. I'm not sure what exactly could be causing it as there's nothing on the INCI that screams out potential irritant, since it's very affordable it may just be down to the ingredients they buy at the most affordable price possible 🤷

Out, aqueous cream is probably the most recommended thing to use by HCP for eczema, it's just the one with SLS that is questionable but so long as it's washed off it theoretically shouldn't be an issue. I do tend to assume that anyone with eczema has tried that and hasn't found it useful in the long term. Eczema is difficult to recommend for, it's so individual and my own experience with it is really mild (just occasionally on my hands in winter). The scientifically backed info isn't always that useful either as they tend to research the most extreme cases.

I'm glad to hear the things you've bought are working for you PA, though I do hope you didn't buy everything as I mentioned a lot of different brands and products Blush

Mint I really like it! Stopped using moisturiser underneath and it’s great Smile might be slightly too heavy for summer, I’ll see what kind of weather we get but I’ll likely go back to frezyderm when (if) it warms up but I’ll definitely repurchase Purito for next autumn/winter. How are you getting on, are you still loving it?

I use and like Cerave hydrating cleanser as a second cleanse at night and on it’s own in the morning, I’ve found it very effective and I have combination/oily skin. I’ll move to cerave foaming cleanser in the morning during summer - it’s not really foamy despite it’s name and I’ve never had any issues with it but I’m very much on the oily side of combination during summer.

Tigerseye81 · 13/03/2020 19:44

Sallie I really like mine too! (Its mint btw, name changed) I'm really poorly at mo so skin flared up but so far I've had no irritation from the spf. Let's hope nothing changes!

banivani · 14/03/2020 14:20

Bo no hard water area but they do something to it so it’s maybe medium? I feel like there’s a film left.

ClientQueen · 14/03/2020 22:44

Going to do a protein treatment on my hair tomorrow as my curls are dropping. May have done a little colourpop ship Blush

Jedstre · 15/03/2020 13:56

I’ve ordered the new Timeless Vit C. My last dropper bottle nearly empty. Is it just packaging that’s changed?

botemp · 15/03/2020 18:28

Curious what would make hard water not hard, I was always under the impression it wasn't possible/super expensive. I don't know what else it could be, I don't have a film feeling and even though it's not tight I can feel it's cleansed off everything just by the way my fingers move against my face. You are using it as second/morning cleanse, right?

I briefly thought you were talking about a colourful boat there for a bit Client 😂

Yes, it's the same Jedstre, only difference is that you need to shake it before use (I've not yet acclimated to that yet).

ClientQueen · 15/03/2020 19:53

Oops. Yes, shop!

banivani · 15/03/2020 20:08

Yup second and morning cleanse. I don’t know exactly how they de-calcify the water but they do it without adding natrium anyway what’s that in English I forget. However I am a child of hard water so when I’m not stripped I feel wrong, I’ll admit that.

Quite liked the face cream from the beauty kitchen that I bought in Holland and Barrett so went out to that shop again today. Lo, the Swedish branch is bankrupt since yesterday so everything was sold at 50% off. Granted I bought the cream and two even since it was on sale, but now I’ll never get it again. 🙄

Smellslikebiscuits · 15/03/2020 20:52

Is natrium the same as sodium?

banivani · 15/03/2020 20:56

That’s it! Couldn’t be fashed to look it up but that’s it alright. 😁

botemp · 15/03/2020 20:57

Yes, biscuits, in the periodic table anyhow.

You could try the foaming one Bani? They also do a BHA one but that can be a bit drying, apparently, which I read as stripping 😬

OP posts:
banivani · 15/03/2020 20:58

Ah I’ll use it for a while at least in the morning and see how I get on in the long run.

SallieSallow · 15/03/2020 21:01

Yes I think the cerave foaming would be worth a try Bani I like it in the summer. Not tried the BHA one.

Jedstre yes I’ve found the timeless vit c the same too, no issues with the pump but same as Bo I’m still getting used to giving it a shake.

Sammi38 · 17/03/2020 18:21

Hi everyone, it’s been a while since I last posted, was just recovering from my peel. It’s been about 6-7 weeks now, since my peel I’ve been using a specialist face wash that’s used for people who have had peels, I also use skinceuticals ha intensifier and serum 10, the serum 10 has been great and no breakouts. I also use Sunday Riley good genes for my chemical exfoliant, and once a week the buffet with peptides (makes my skin feel so smooth the next day). My moisturisers are drunk elephant proteini and la la retro.

My routine is very basic, I just splash with cold water in the morning, use my serum10 and ha intensifier, proteini and Clinique city block. Evening is wash with my peel face wash stuff, twice, chemical exfoliant or oil or serum, depending on the day, then my la la retro.

I’ve noticed a real difference in my skin evenness and texture and even though I’ve lost nearly 6 stone, my face doesn’t seem too saggy, and my facial skin feels firm, which is always good.

Outtheforest · 18/03/2020 04:57

I have completely forgotten who suggested trying antibiotics to help with spots. I've taken the plunge and am trying a topical cream the pharmacist gave me, fingers crossed.

Stumpedasatree · 18/03/2020 09:45

Can anyone recommend a decent Vit C serum please? Thanks!

Sammi38 · 18/03/2020 09:53

Just to add, I used the body shop drops of youth concentrate last night, as it was in my advent calendar and I’m trying to use stuff up, today I have a couple of red itchy lumps on my jawline, it isn’t good and I’m assuming it’s the drops of youth as my skin was settled before using it. So I shall be avoiding that in the future!

Alancarr · 18/03/2020 13:45

great summary - many thanks !

SallieSallow · 18/03/2020 19:45

Stumped timeless Vit c I used and loved by many of us here
www.timeless-uk.com/products/timeless-skin-care-20-vitamin-c-e-ferulic-acid-serum-1-oz

That’s good news Sammi glad you got a good routine in place, sounds like you definitely need to drop the drops of youth though Grin

Good luck with the antibiotic cream Out

Hope everyone is coping as well as can be expected and keeping physically and mentally well ❤️

That was crazy!

Tsmummy08 · 23/03/2020 13:15

Quick question - is the "other" Toleriane cleanser the one listed as "caring wash" on EPP? I'm running low on Dermo-cleanser...

Hope everyone is keeping safe and well xx

botemp · 23/03/2020 13:30

Can you take a picture of your cleanser tsn, as I'm not sure which one you're trying to replace.
