Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18 Thread 19

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

I've actually been to the allergy clinic recently but they can't prescribe the Xolair so back to dermatology!

botemp · 11/03/2020 18:52

Is it that bothersome Client? I've only ever really experienced it as a bit odd/quirky. It's never bothered me in a physical well-being sense.

Thanks for the speedy responses guys!

Yes I'm in the UK. MI is the bane of my life, along with angioedema, it doesn't make for much fun.

I hadn't realised that MI was now only in wash off items? Is that a new thing as last time I looked they were still being used in mascaras?!? I have to be so careful about washing power/fabric conditioner/body wash/soaps/shampoo/cleaning products/ paint/ the world....that seems to have MI in that it's really narrowed my vision to products; that I've ended up using limited products and sticking to them through fear.

The urticaria is linked to the Angioedema and is a common side effect. I've had it for approx seven years now and it took a good couple of years of in depth tests (allergy and blood) and being bounced from immunology to dermatology and back before they worked out that I had both the sever allergy and the angioedema! I now sit under immunology with open access to call them if I have a severe flare up to get drugs. But I mostly manage it myself and an understanding GP/Pharmacist who let me pretty much self manage my medication. They think it's hereditary as I've always had the typical asthma/eczema/hay fever since I was born and my Dad has suffered with weird allergies and skin care conditions - water having once being one of the allergies! But for me, it's never been an issue as long as I moisturise straight out of the shower/bath as otherwise I feel like my skin will crack!

I really love makeup and want to get some nice bits of skin care too. I'm very lucky that I never get spots and don't have issues with pores. It's mostly just dryness/tightness of skin and sensitivity to certain products.

Thanks again guys.

PAtothegruesometwosome · 11/03/2020 18:58

@ClientQueen - immunology have banded about Xolair with me before. As well as some horrific immunosuppressant drug. Both of which I've refused and we try to work around with a concoction of drugs. Good luck with the Xolair though as know some people have had good results with it.

ClientQueen · 11/03/2020 18:58

@botemp I can no longer exercise or even go for a walk Sad
This is it, head to toe including the palms of my hands and soles of feet and it's as itchy as it looks

I've just looked it up and MI has been banned in non wash off products since 2015 in the EU. I'm finding it interesting that you're coming across it so often in cosmetics, although not unusual in things like body wash and soaps. Definitely something to watch out for with the GB-EU trade deal, if there's no alignment with the EU best avoid the sudden flurry of US brands as they still use MI a lot, especially in wash off products and also familiar products and assumed safe that sell in both US and Europe as you may suddenly be getting the US versions with a different INCI.

Ouch Client, hope it settles or can be fixed with medications. I had a minor flare up (very minor in comparison to you) a few weeks ago and I did find Cicaplast good at chasing it away quicker. Have yet to figure out what was the trigger.

OP posts:
PAtothegruesometwosome · 11/03/2020 19:32

Wow thanks @botemp you learn something new every day! Will definitely keep an eye on the EU situation, though going on my past research in clearly a bit behind the times Wink

Are there any specific products within the ranges you recommended that you think could be good for me?!

botemp · 11/03/2020 19:54

Since you're dry/very dry probably best to look towards the Avene tolerance range. Depending on how severe the eczema is the Avene Xeracalm oil cleanser (for the body) can be good for the face as it doesn't disturb the lipid barrier and it's good for the body too (just mind the eyes, it can be a touch stingy as it's not formulated to be eye safe, perhaps with your other issues this isn't the best idea...). Otherwise the LRP Toleriane dermo cleanser is probably a good all rounder. The rich moisturiser of both ranges are pretty heavy so if you're not looking for a specific repair moisturiser they do the job well of locking things down. The superdrug simply pure hydrating serum mention by client does have good barrier repair ingredients although not everyone is as enthusiastic about it immediately. Since it's a very cheap purchase it's a good one to try though.

Sorry, paragraphs would have been helpful Blush

ClientQueen · 11/03/2020 20:05

The serum is actually get one half price at the minute. It has saved my retinol flaking face from day 1 so yes, enthusiastic Grin
I'm picky too, I only recommend the good stuff!
Now to go try my new expensive eyeshadow brush....

botemp · 11/03/2020 20:08

Have you been drinking the influencer Koolaid again , Client HmmWink

OP posts:
ClientQueen · 11/03/2020 20:22

@botemp I was watching Katie Jane hughes... then saw the Rephr brush was half price and well Blush

botemp · 11/03/2020 20:28

I meant more that you sounded like an influencer, "I only recommend what I like, buy this random thing now!".

I do like a Japanese brush but the fude snobs over on Reddit haven't been all that complimentary about the brand, not outright hating it, but in comparison to their giant collections of niche Japanese brushes the only nice things they said about it is the pricing when they're on offer but they have a ridiculously detailed breakdown of what to buy instead.

OP posts:
ClientQueen · 11/03/2020 20:32

Ahhh. Grin yes def not an influencer as I will also slate stuff if it's shite. I have a huda eyeshadow palette I hate with a passion
For 12 dollars I figured it was worth a go! It's the pencil brush I got

botemp · 11/03/2020 20:39

How much was the shipping? Did it get here quick? For $12 I might take a punt if I can figure out what you use it for? Is it just for eyeshadow under the eye and smudging out a bit of liner (top and bottom)? I really don't do much eye work though, think I could use it to contour my nose with?

OP posts:
ClientQueen · 11/03/2020 20:46

Yeah pretty much, also good for in the crease. I'm planning to use it mostly for smudging liner
Shipping wasn't cheap, about the same price as the brush!
Ordered Friday, arrived yesterday (DHL got lost so it delivered today)

botemp · 11/03/2020 20:55

Well that's a bit of a false economy -which influencers never ever comment on Hmm Shipping is only a few dollars on CDJapan, usually, could probably get a really nice Chikuhodo for around the same price (t series rather than z series) including the shipping costs and in all likelihood a much higher quality brush in terms of hair selection and longevity.

OP posts:
ClientQueen · 11/03/2020 21:55

Ok don't tempt me into more GrinGrinGrin

banivani · 12/03/2020 09:04

I noticed belatedly that we've had nothing BUT opinions on the Cerave cleanser, apologies. It's so hydrating I wasn't sure my face was clean Grin hence question! Thank you for answer Bo!

Karcheer · 12/03/2020 09:35

I like the cleanser but i do notice the moisturiser stings... is this normal?

my face is so happy to be back on Tret. No more spots, juts back to being flaky.

Outtheforest · 12/03/2020 16:16

Entirely unscientific advice here as I couldn't afford to visit the doctor at the time but I went through a phase of rashes/hives/circular patches of eczema never did figure out the cause but I found washing with only aqueous cream helped.
I know aqueous is a bit of a controversial one but using it instead of any soap or shower gel really helped.

PAtothegruesometwosome · 12/03/2020 22:53

@botemp can I just say a massive thank you!

I popped to Boots this morning and bought everything you recommended. Used it all tonight and my skin feels amazing.

Thanks so much for taking the time to recommend, really kind of you.

mintmagnummm · 13/03/2020 06:12

sallie how are you getting on with your spf?

banivani · 13/03/2020 08:06

I'm back. See, I'm not feeling clean. This change of cleanser is unfortunately coinciding with more light in the mornings so I see how hideous I am and can then think my skin is getting worse. Is it really effective as a second cleanser?
