I think it would be a fairer system for allow any of the monarchs children to be Queen/King if the first born doesn't want to do.

That is literally the antithesis of a monarchy though Confused.

I love the earrings that the Belgian princess is wearing. Does anyone know if they are costume or priceless?

FiveTwoFaster · 19/12/2019 11:54

I’ve just watched the State Opening of Parliament and I felt really sorry for HMQ. She doesn’t usually show her age as much as that - or we don’t see it in photos maybe she does - and the slow walk out, I thought it was lucky it is so slow because she is bloody old and I can’t think anyone would object to PoW becoming Prince Regent.

Lord Cholmondeley looks perfectly cheerful with PoW too.

BorisForPM · 19/12/2019 12:22

Vince Cable's daughter is Kate's aide for the project and she has been liaising with experts on various topics to discuss research and put it all into one report.

It has been said that a final report has been "submitted... for Kate's approval."

Kate is said to have not attended meetings, but she has been made aware of findings and is said to have shown knowledge of various issues.

Do you have any sources for these claims @thisenglishlife?

astralweaks · 19/12/2019 13:23

Sad to see the comments about the hairstyle of Maxima’s friend and the reference to Sarah Ferguson not aging well.

Lunde · 19/12/2019 14:42

CPV, Prince Daniel, Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar visit the Katarina Church in Stockholm to set up and tell the Nativity story (in Swedish)

SunsetBoulevard3 · 19/12/2019 18:38

@Five I thought the same. The Queen doesn't look well as seemed really frail. I wonder if the Andrew debacle has got to her.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 19/12/2019 18:38

@Lunde

But the risk is that you end up with someone like Trump. After all he was not a politician and had no political experience when he decided to run for president

I'm speaking of ceremonial representative; not someone with political power. Eg in Germany; the Chancellor Angela Merkel runs it; but there is actually a president of Germany.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 19/12/2019 18:41

Just watched a bit of the Queen's speech on the news. HM sounds tired.
Honestly Charles should take over as regent. Let her enjoy her dogs and horses and live in Scotland and Norfolk.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 19/12/2019 18:51

HMQ probably is tired. She’s a great granny and she works bloody hard. She’s had an awful year. Her husband had a bad car crash. One son is a car crash. All the Brexit and Parliament stuff. As well as her normal work load. Bet she’s happy to get on that train to Norfolk and put her feet up and watch cash in the attic.

mathanxiety · 19/12/2019 19:09

That's only in a presidential system.

Ireland has a president, a parliament, and a prime minister. The role of president is basically to represent Ireland abroad, to consult with the Council of State on bills referred to him/her for signing as to constitutionality, to refer bills on to the Supreme Court if there seems to be an issue.

Here is the current incumbent

all gussied up, charming Her Maj.

He has a lot of fans -

He is a former Labour politician and minister in several governments who writes poetry in his spare time.

After the abdication of Edward VIII I suspect that possibility is theoretically open, even though he was sort of pushed out. (However, if George could refuse then presumably Charlotte could also refuse in turn, leaving poor little Louis saddled with it. They might have to pick straws among the rest of the RF if he had other plans.)

gingercat02 · 19/12/2019 19:21

@mathanxiety Michael D is a true ledge! For the non Irish he even had a song written about him when he was a TD (Irish MP). Google Micheal D. Rockin in the Dáil by the Saw Doctors 🤣

Encyclo · 19/12/2019 19:34

Love Michael D Higgins so much, or "Miggledy" as we affectionately call him.

Don't know quite what we did to deserve him tbh. He's amazing.

PinkSun9 · 19/12/2019 20:15

I think HMTQ, even though frail with age, doesn't want to give up being the Top Boss. (Like with many people who stay in their position for a long time and start believing that nobody else can do their job) It must be difficult for her to imagine that anybody else can replace her. She probably wants to control everything relating to the Monarchy and the whole RF.

I read somewhere that the QM had a difficult time not being in control of things when Prince Philip started to play a dominant role in BP. She didn't want to leave BP where she had been the effective Boss during her husband's reign. PP had a tough time trying to stop her interfering and get her out of BP.

StCharlotte · 19/12/2019 21:41

Google Micheal D. Rockin in the Dáil by the Saw Doctors

Didn't he used to be one of their geography teachers? Or have I imagined that?

Inniu · 19/12/2019 21:47

My 9 year old bought Miggle D Giggles

miggledgiggles.com/

As Christmas gifts for his siblings.

Not much fashion to discuss with the Irish President and no tiaras.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 19/12/2019 22:06

Considering we are missing tiara talk, I found this article on missing royal jewels
www.mentalfloss.com/article/86197/7-spectacular-lost-crown-jewels

Regarding King John's lost royal jewels, I'm quite tempted to go across the Fens with DD's metal detector Crown Grin
A MN day out perhaps 🤣

Gooseysgirl · 19/12/2019 22:12

Here's Miggledy with H&M, Sabina Higgins and canine royalty Bród and Síoda 😍

Meghan is posture goals there but needed either a different bra or to size up on the dress that day!

What is the actual point of a monarch of England & Wales?

So do we think that an independent Scotland would be a republic? I do think that is a possibility if the Queen is no longer with us if and when Scotland becomes independent.

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 19/12/2019 22:51

She didn't want to leave BP where she had been the effective Boss during her husband's reign.

Eh? Prince Philip never had reign. Have I totally misunderstood your post PinkSun9?

I meant that QM (Queen Mother) didn't want to leave BP after King George VI (QM's husband) passed away and QE2 and Prince Philip moved in there after QE2's coronation. QM still wanted to be in control of things until eventually, with great difficulty, Prince Philip got her to move out of Buckingham Palace.

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 19/12/2019 23:22

Oh, the QM! Completely missed that, sorry! Yes, I can imagine her being a bit comfy and not letting her DD get on with it. She was splendid at wearing tiaras and jewellery though!

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 19/12/2019 23:22

I think Pink is referring to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother as she eventually moved to Clarence House after she became Dowager Queen after George VI death.
It must be quite hard leaving your home in those circumstances.
Queen Alexandra didn't want to leave Marlborough House for BP when Edward VII was King. When they were Prince & Princess of Wales (when Victoria was Queen) they had lived at Marlborough House from 1863 - 1901 and Alexandra had become very attached to Marlborough & was a bit miffed to say the least when her son George & daughter-in-law May moved in. (The future George V & Queen Mary)
Alexandra was even a bit put out to have to give up her PoW title as she'd had it for so long (even though Queen is a big promotion) & it took her a while to get used to the idea of her son & dil now being called The a Prince & Princess of Wales instead of The Duke & Duchess of York.

Despite the above she had a very good relationship with all of her children (although she did baby them a bit) & would have liked nothing better than to have had them live at home with her forever.
