I was going to say the same. In the older photos she looked so much healthier.

paradyning · 12/12/2019 09:14

I think her make-up was more matte last night and 'glowier' in other photos.

frugalkitty · 12/12/2019 09:22

I don't think Kate needed that necklace last night, it was too big for the neckline of the dress. I also think she needs a bit of a make up intervention as she seems to be leaning towards a heavy, matte look at the moment which I think ages her. She could do with some luminosity tips from Meghan.

ajandjjmum · 12/12/2019 09:25

I thought she was being polite (assuming the necklace was a wedding gift from the Queen, as suggested) wearing the gift so that the giver could see it. It's actually a pretty dated design (IMO), and I suppose that was one of the few occasions that she could get away with wearing it.

QueenOfTheAndals · 12/12/2019 09:43

Something that just occurred to me - Kate wore a navy velvet dress on the day that it was revealed that HRP had purchased Diana's navy velvet dress. Coincidence??

What Kate wore has this for the close up of the ring it's poor quality but it definitely isn't the citrine one it's new/borrowed from the collection.

Yes I think more off the shoulder would have worked better for the gown. I'm not sure if the necklace was a wedding gift to Kate it was given to the queen as a wedding gift I think all jewels are on long term loan rather than gifted as such, for example apparently Sophie wore those earrings to the state dinner in June.

Interesting article on Queen Mary Lovers Knot v. Cambridge Lovers Knot tiaras.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 12/12/2019 10:05

@Josephine I really don't think you can say Diana wasn't photogenic! She was amazingly photogenic.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 12/12/2019 10:06

I know I will be flamed, but I just don't think Kate looks well these days. Her skin is very lined, she looks drawn and she's so so thin.

banivani · 12/12/2019 10:08

Oh I think Kate looks fabulous. She reminds me of Sean Young in Bladerunner Grin. Great dress, pity about those bloody sashes and orders that spoil the look. That is very regal and theatrical in an understated way, love it.

Adding a bonus pic of Petra Mede at the Nobel dinner. No idea why she was there but she looks great!

Apparently they were served deer that the king might have shot himself because it was from "the royal hunt".

I like the way the dark velvet of Kate's dress shows off the sash . And I love the way the material flows at the hem .

But I don't think the overall look is flattering on someone who is so slight .And I think she is too fond of clothes that show off how thin she is - that's not meant to be quite as mean as it sounds . It worries me that she appears to like showcasing her weight loss .She is too invested in keeping herself at a v low body weight .I don't think it's a healthy mindset .

QueenOfTheAndals · 12/12/2019 10:52

@SunsetBoulevard3 I think what Josephine meant was that it wasn't just that Diana was photogenic - she was beautiful in the first place!

You know, I’m just not keen on Kate’s dress. It’s kind of funereal and so unlike the dresses she usually wears to these events. Mind you, I thought the pale blue ruched satin dress she wore earlier in the year was a shocker too.

I thought she was being polite (assuming the necklace was a wedding gift from the Queen, as suggested) wearing the gift so that the giver could see it. It's actually a pretty dated design (IMO), and I suppose that was one of the few occasions that she could get away with wearing it.

It’s “dated” because it wasn’t a wedding gift from the Queen to Kate, it was one of the Queen’s wedding gifts that Kate sometimes loans from the vault Grin

Personally, I wouldn’t wear it out of politeness, it’s an absolutely spectacular piece!

I love these events and seeing the tiaras come out. It’s sort of a shame that only the Queen changes hers up, but it sort of makes sense that the other Royal women have “their” tiaras.

Apparently the enormous emerald necklace worn by the Queen tonight has never been seen before. There’s some speculation that it was part of the Mrs Greville collection bequeathed to the Queen Mother (which included the emerald tiara Eugenia wore at her wedding).

Apologies if this has already been said, I haven’t caught up with this morning’s posts yet.

Haworthia · 12/12/2019 11:08

This is the dress I mean.

And I agree with PPs who say Kate seem to favour dresses that show off how incredibly thin she is. Although, tbh, she’s so thin it’s difficult to hide. Even in her daywear staples of coat dresses, her waist always looks minuscule despite the thick fabric.

I know we’re not really allowed to call Kate’s thinness out in these threads, but she’d look so much more youthful if she was fuller in the face.

QueenOfTheAndals · 12/12/2019 11:15

I think Kate is naturally slim and has a very narrow frame. Pippa is similar and Carole is slim too. I have no doubt that she works at it though - if you think back to the abuse Fergie got for being large then it's no surprise really. Though these days I see women in the public eye criticised more for being underweight than overweight.

OP posts:
AdaColeman · 12/12/2019 11:37

I'm not sure about Kate's dress last night. While I think that the combination of dark velvet and diamonds works well, I don"t really like the way the neckline sits.

Kate is too narrow across the shoulders for that style to work for her. The necklace isn't shown off to good advantage because the top of the dress is too high. If Kate had been a little more daring and dropped the neckline to shown some cleavage the whole look might have been more dramatic.
But her smile is dazzling, and she seems to be happy. Perhaps her clothes choices reflect her status, and once she is Princess of Wales she will be less cautious and her clothes more exciting!

Haworthia · 12/12/2019 11:39

She is naturally tall and lithe, but she is SO much thinner than she ever was pre-engagement. She’s a great deal thinner than in her engagement photos too. She dropped a ton of weight for the wedding and has made sure to drop her weight down again after each pregnancy. I refuse to believe that her current weight is “natural”. It takes a lot of work - primarily, exercise and not eating - to be that bony.

AudacityOfHope · 12/12/2019 12:17

Yes, I think of pretty much everything she wears 'that would sit better if she was a stone heavier' and her face is beginning to look a little pinched with it too.

If she's happy then that's wonderful, but I can imagine the pressure must be almost impossible to handle.

SenecaFalls · 12/12/2019 12:32

I think what Josephine meant was that it wasn't just that Diana was photogenic - she was beautiful in the first place!

That's what I understood it to mean, too. Diana did look great in all her photos, but I have heard from other people who have seen her in person that she was breathtakingly stunning. There can definitely be some aspects of a person's look and personality that photos don't translate.

I had a similar thought when I saw Queen Noor of Jordan up close some years back. She always looks good in photos, but the real person is much more impressive.

frugalkitty · 12/12/2019 12:34

Weight aside, that ruched pale blue dress is hideous full stop. It wouldn't look good on anybody and I can't imagine why she thought it looked nice. One of the worst dresses she's worn definitely.

beanaseireann · 12/12/2019 12:35

I agree FrugalKitty re luminosity tips from Megan.
I'd love some myself Grin
Kate's make up is too 'heavy handed' at the moment.
I do hope Kate is not trying too hard to be soo thin.
Having said that, I know I need to try much harder Blush

SenecaFalls · 12/12/2019 12:36

I like Kate's velvet dress. I think it is very elegant. I do think that the royal doodads that are affixed to it detract from the elegance, however. I think those sorts of decorations look better when they blend in rather than stand out.

astralweaks · 12/12/2019 12:57

Kate’s eyebrows are too heavy. Very ageing.

astralweaks · 12/12/2019 13:01

Kate is far too thin and is now losing her prettiness, I’m afraid. Her sister seems to be more naturally thin and her mother looks great and never gaunt.

QueenOfTheAndals · 12/12/2019 13:44

She does like a strong brow. Maybe she's more on trend than we thought!
