Princess Diana once asked my dad if she could watch one of his operations, (he is a surgeon), but he said no as he thought it would have been a dangerous distraction for the operation in question.

BeatriceTheBeast · 29/11/2019 11:05

Sorry, that sounded so name droppy!!! I was just trying to say that I agree with the pp who said that royalty doing work experience at hospitals might not always be welcome. Not saying that is the case with Kate though. I'm sure, seeing as she has given birth 3 times, she was probably pretty respectful etc.

DuchessofWoke · 29/11/2019 11:19

Largesse is the right word for Diana. “I’d like to be a queen in people’s hearts.” Who says things like that? Just goes to show how if enough smoke is blown up a person’s arse they will eventually believe they are superhuman.

frugalkitty · 29/11/2019 11:57

There was a lot of fuss over one of the hospital pictures of Diana in theatre wearing a face mask but with masses of eye make up on, something along the lines of nurses not being allowed to wear heavy make up but it made a better photo op for Diana.

Just checking in whilst having a break from scrubbing my kitchen floor. That's one job I wouldn't miss if I was a royal lady! (Or dusting the blinds, I hate that job too) Grin

latedecember1963 · 29/11/2019 12:15

That made me giggle, Frugal Kitty. 😁
If I was a duchess I wouldn't miss cleaning the bathroom towel-rail style radiators.
I chose them because I thought they looked stylish. I didn't think about having to damp wipe each individual row. 😠

thisenglishlife · 29/11/2019 12:40

Max looked fantastic I thought... and look at that sapphire!!

In the context of the interview, she was asked if she thought she would ever be the Queen of this Country, and she said no, she would like to be the Queen of People's hearts. Almost 30 years ago she was extremely popular and sympathy for her "3 of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded" was extremely high.

QueenOfTheAndals · 29/11/2019 12:49

Yes, while she may have had issues that quote needs to be taken in the context of the interview.

I think the whole Di in surgery was in her infatuation with Hasnat khan phase... it was dodgy AF. There was huge backlash about her appearing in photos in surgery wearing mascara and other makeup.

But in was also - weirdly - related to her (still lingering) "connection" with Pakistan.

Very happy to be corrected, but I think she had a massive crush, and was fixated on dr Khan . She thought leaving him might "free" her from Charles and the royals - it seems amazing now when you think of it all. But it was (give or take) about the time her then friend jemima goldsmith married Imran Khan.

DevonUkelele · 29/11/2019 13:03

Also, Diana's "there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded" quote was a total bombshell.

I mean, we all knew it, but she laid it out, on tv, before millions. Simply, eloquently. Stunning.

Right or wrong, it's a quote for our generations, already more than 20 years old, and now code for every affair ever had, in every marriage. Few of us (male or female, or anything in between) will ever pull off that blue eye-liner, mascara doe-eyed look. But we don't need to - because Diana did.

frugalkitty · 29/11/2019 13:09

latedecember I had our towel rails taken out. The plumber kept saying "are you sure? You want a.....radiator? are you sure?" Oh yes, easy to keep clean and actually heats the bathroom not just the towels.

SenecaFalls · 29/11/2019 15:39

I could use some staff today myself. We've been cleaning up from hosting a big Thanksgiving dinner yesterday. And inspired by this thread, I decided to go as full royal as I could. I used my grandmother's Wedgwood and polished my other grandmother's silver flatware. And none of that stuff can be put in the dishwasher. It was worth it though.

DuchessofWoke · 29/11/2019 16:25

Just to go back to the Bashir interview. Why did he ask her if she saw herself becoming queen?

Weren’t they separated at this point?

queenofarles · 29/11/2019 17:00

On another thread someone posted a picture of Julia Carling wearing a surgery mask and loads of eyeliner and mascara, it was actually funny, seeing the connection between her ex and Diana.

StartupRepair · 29/11/2019 19:44

I'm sorry I don't have a link but I just read Clive James' on Diana, in the New Yorker after her death and it is brilliant.

StartupRepair · 29/11/2019 19:45

Rogue apostrophe.

Horsemad · 29/11/2019 19:54

I never understood Diana's attraction to WC, he wasn't even good looking! She could have had anyone, why go for him?!

Well worth a read.

QueenOfTheAndals · 29/11/2019 20:12

Thanks @StartupRepair, what a wonderful writer he was. He'll be sorely missed.

I think nowadays it’s hard for people to understand how famous Diana was, even in the mid 90s.
The internet was a rare thing, I think it was a dial up modem, hardly anyone had a mobile, so the only way famous people were seen was either on the a TV or in newspapers or magazines.
Diana was on a tabloid cover pretty much every single day.
She was the most famous woman in the world. I think the others around that time, were people like Madonna, and the original supermodels l’île Naomi, Linda Evangelista ( I don’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 Dollars a day) and Christy Turlington.
Diana’s Panorama interview was a huge deal. Everyone stayed in and watched it live.

FiveTwoFaster · 29/11/2019 20:30

That’s a wonderful wonderful article.

StCharlotte · 29/11/2019 20:32

Ah bless Clive James.

I skimmed the article in the end but this jumped out at me, God love the DoY...

The Duchess of York chortled around in her usual irrepressible manner, a bumper car in taffeta.

QueenOfTheAndals · 29/11/2019 20:36

Yep @CurlyWurlyTwirly, today's celebs are a dime a dozen. It sometimes seems anyone with a smartphone and an good grasp of IG filters can be one, but Diana was something else.

@StCharlotte and Robert Maxwell - a ton and a half of half-cured ham wrapped in a white tuxedo, his pan-scrubber eyebrows dripping condescension like spoiled lard.

😂😂

Fantastic article @StartupRepair

Clive James was an exceptional writer. RIP
( hope he’s in cahoots sharing a crème brûlée with Diana somewhere....)
