It’s hard to find the whole thing.. (Try to ignore the subtitles !)

@StartupRepair that is a beautiful eulogy. Clive James was a once-in-a-lifetime writer.

frugalkitty · 29/11/2019 21:34

What a lovely article, I feel a bit teary reading that, thank you for the link Startup

StartupRepair · 29/11/2019 21:43

I'm glad you all loved it too. He paints such an engaging picture of her and such a respectful portrait of Charles too. It made me laugh that Charles is used to people magically appearing and doesn't really take in that they lose a day of work to go to Highgrove for a 15 minute meeting.

SenecaFalls · 29/11/2019 21:48

"When she walked into a hospital ward, everyone in it recognized her as one of them, because she treated them as if they could have been her. They were her. She was just their souls, free for a day, in a beautiful body that walked so straight and breathed so easily."

I think that this observation is very apt. I think that Diana had a gift for a kind of transcendent empathy because of her own experiences that always came across as very authentic.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 30/11/2019 06:37

What an amazing article.

Thank you Startup

MotherofPearl · 30/11/2019 07:43

Just read the article - it's excellent. A compelling reminder of how magnetic Diana was.

mathanxiety · 30/11/2019 07:56

Wonderful writing. Thank you so much for that Clive James link, StartupRepair.

Jazmin Grimaldi (Albert's oldest daughter) at the Princess Grace awards earlier this week. I assume that's her mother in the red dress? She seems to have a decent relationship with Albert. Not sure how she gets on with Charlene but she was born long before she came on the scene.

Maxima in Lahore. No salwars for her! I'd like a better look at her red boots.

Just waving, this has fallen off my Threads I’m on. Tea anyone?

BigGreenOlives · 30/11/2019 09:05

More Maxima, she’s back in the Netherlands.

BeatriceTheBeast · 30/11/2019 09:46

Maxima looks great with her hair up and I really like the pill box hat. Very vintagey.

Spudlet · 30/11/2019 10:09

On the Diana article - magnetic, yes. But also manipulative.

It was beautifully written but I found it hard to warm to the woman being described, I’m afraid. I felt sorry for her in parts. She clearly had problems, and in some ways had been dealt a difficult hand. But I’m not sure I’d have liked her much.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 30/11/2019 10:17

I agree Spudlet

banivani · 30/11/2019 11:53

I’d agree too - I get the impression of someone a bit susceptible to English “poshness”, and inclined to be more tolerant of the foibles of the posh. Mind that’s from the article and not any reflection on her personality at all.

QueenOfTheAndals · 30/11/2019 12:41

I think Diana was a man's woman.

QueenOfTheAndals · 30/11/2019 12:45

Weren't there stories of her sitting in silence in the Carlings' lounge room only to burst into animated conversation the moment Julia left the room and she was alone with Will?

Clive James wrote like an angel. But he had his blind spots.......

Spudlet · 30/11/2019 12:53

I think that’s a fair assessment, Queen.

Spudlet · 30/11/2019 12:54

X-post - yes, I think I read that on here Queen.

He certainly did Bert - mind you, don’t we all?

yesbutnobut · 30/11/2019 13:01

Long time lurker on this thread and avid Crown/royal family fan. I've just finished Lady Glenconner's (hardback) book Lady in Waiting and wonder if anyone would like to buy it off me for the price of a paperback plus postage? It's in virtually mint condition.

BigGreenOlives · 30/11/2019 13:22

I’ve just read it too & can recommend it. Great fun & I liked the photos.

Annasgirl · 30/11/2019 14:23

Oh I loved that Clive James article - I must say I always adored her. I think we'd have been friends but I like damaged people!!

DuchessofWoke · 30/11/2019 14:48

That Clive James essay is a tad grandiose. He basically had a massive crush on her. He was flattered by the attention from the royals in general and, in particular, an attractive woman.

He writes like a grieving widower. I wonder how his wife felt reading that.
