Ooh, nice coat, bo, but I agree it's bright. I have a very red wool/cashmere coat, that I wear as it gets towards spring for exactly those reasons, red. It's warm enough for winter but the colour feels more spring.

Redandblue11 · 27/01/2020 19:16

Lovely coat Bo, yes quirky I want something lively now... I will keep an eye in my local second hand shops
...

XingMing · 27/01/2020 19:50

Woo hoo! XingSon has been accepted for his TV production course at uni. No A level grades to wait for, so it's unconditional.

Floisme · 27/01/2020 20:08

Fabulous - I'm really pleased to hear that! Will he be leaving home?

timeisnotaline · 28/01/2020 04:37

Great news re xingson! And Horta house looks fabulous. I love brights, wore a block pink other stories dress saturday for the first time in ages. It has been in storage for 6 years so it may be transformed into moth dust (Sad I’m dreading seeing everything!) but I have a coat of the most fabulous hot pink red orange tweed. It was my grandma’s so the style isn’t perfect, with brown velvet trim and quite bulky but I loved it so much. I got a lot of comments!

Floisme · 28/01/2020 13:12

My coat has gone bo, sorry.
I'm cross now - what a idiot I am.

XingMing · 28/01/2020 13:50

Flo, don't grieve... it wasn't meant to be. There's another coat waiting for you.

Thanks for the kind wishes for DS. Yes, he's leaving home to go to the other end of the county, not a million miles from where I grew up, and in one of my favourite small towns, named as among the best towns to live in in the UK. We shall love going to visit (except in summer) but it will probably mean that accommodation prices induce physical pain.

Floisme · 29/01/2020 07:31

I know. It was the right coat at the wrong time - too many other expenses, and besides I'm not exactly short of coats as you know (although I haven't got a 1960s cocoon coat in burnt orange mohair and probably never will now Sad)

XingMing · 29/01/2020 12:30

I weep with you and for you Flo.

XingMing · 29/01/2020 13:45

The Times today has done articles on tweed trends and on eco-denim, in case anyone is interested. I was taken with some of the Uterque outfits, makes me wish they had more UK stores.

banivani · 29/01/2020 14:17

How thoughtless Flo, now Bo can't get hers!

I think everyone should be permitted to own a bright coat. I spent many years wanting a red one but I'm sort of over it now since I have a tweed mania instead. I want that one Time is describing!

I always thought a conservatory and an orangerie were attached to houses and so essentially the same thing, except conservatories are considered naff and not the thing nowadays - thus my joke ;)

But I googled it and something something amount of glass something there is an actual difference.

Congratulations to Xingson! :D

XingMing · 29/01/2020 15:50

Thanks bani!

botemp · 29/01/2020 16:08

my coat is gone too Sad

Well done XingSon!

I am looking at a few coats on eBay. Saw this one but the photo is not great is said to be as new bottle green and in an Italian wool mix, brand middle range uk, I think is £22. Plus postage
Not bright bright but brighter than my usual navy/black/camel winter coats ...
The thing is with eBay and these things is tricky to really gauge if the fit will be good ...

Aplause for Xingson!

XingMing · 29/01/2020 21:28

Looking at the colour range, that could be better (or worse). The door colour is not giving you a decent reference colour.

banivani · 30/01/2020 07:41

It looks quite ratty in the photo but it’s marked as new? Could be a bargain with interesting texture!

ToEllewithIt · 30/01/2020 08:47

Congratulation to xingson

red Is there any Alpaca or camel in the mix that’s giving it that texture? That can look not great in photos, but really nice in real life. The colour also looks a bit murky, but again it could be the photo.

I wore my bright red coat yesterday. It’s a very flattering kind of fit and flare cut in a gorgeous fabric, but it feels a teeny bit dated right now. It’s good for work, but a bit too prim for weekends iykwim.

That pink coat is lovely botemp

quirkychick · 30/01/2020 10:57

Outside photos, as the light is very dingy inside today. This is the burgundy, textured, leopard scarf I found in the cupboard (completely clearing it out so we can have proper fitted wardrobes). The other side is a reverse pattern and the ends are fringed. I'm wearing my "opera" coat Grin.

Well done, Xingson.

I agree that coat could be a lovely colour in real life, but it's hard to tell in photos.

I was mourning missing out on the pink coat this morning but I've just spotted it on someone else and it didn't look that great. It was rather crumpled (material isn't all that thick) and the colour was a bit harsh on her so maybe I've made a lucky escape 🤷 this is what I'm telling myself anyhow and I'll probably still be checking all the Zaras in Antwerp and Paris manically.

That green coat is a bit of a risk, it would depend on the fabric content. Like Elle pointed out, mohair and alpaca can look drab in a photo and great in RL but if it's synthetic to look like mohair/alpaca (or cheap/low % alpaca) it will look fine for a bit but then look quite shabby before the coat is anywhere near being worn out. It looks quite wide and short, it's a silhouette that I usually avoid as it looks a bit Russia in the 90s/pregnancy coat on me. You could probably carry it off better, Red, but I'd check your own coats of you already have silhouettes like that and that you actually like them.

Interesting about the red coat not feeling quite modern. I've been on the lookout for awhile and my main complaint is that the colour is off, but mostly that they're rather prim. I'd love something like the Raey coat with a bit of texture in red but I've only really spotted the Max Mara teddy coat which I'd written off as I thought it was mad to be spending that much on a synthetic coat. Recently discovered it's silk and alpaca and I tried it on in blue, I'm trying heavily to ignore it due to ££££ but I'm talking myself into how I'd still wear it as an old bitty as it would fab with grey hair... Help me save me from myself 😬

Should arrive in Antwerp in a bit, hopefully the culottes are still in stock at Massimo Dutti...

Sorry, forgot to mention, I really like the scarf quirky and what I can see of the opera coat.

quirkychick · 30/01/2020 14:38

Thanks, bo. I like the blue coat too, even if it's ££££.

My red coat can feel a bit outdated, actually. It's from old from Hobbs. I do really like it, it's got an asymmetric funnel collar and is quite fitted, but only really works with slim trousers or shorter length skirts. Which might be why.

Redandblue11 · 30/01/2020 14:38

That scarf is great quirky love the colour of your coat too.
Thanks for feedback on that coat, I asked the seller and composition is 80% wool and 20% polyamide.
The shape might be an issue ... you are right, in general I tend to avoid that sort of shape ... in fact I used to have a tweed burgundy coat similar shape that I loved except for the shape Blush
I know ... no need to say anything.
I saw another one similar looking fabric but 60% mohair and rest wool but in an orange/pinky colour.
However today I am wearing my camel coat which is not very thick and I am feeling warm as is quite a mild day ... so I am thinking if I should be better with a mild winter type coat as this year I have not had the chance (yet) to wear any serious warm clothing as it has been quite a mild winter so far.

Redandblue11 · 30/01/2020 14:39

That blue coat! Love it

quirkychick · 30/01/2020 20:28

I hear you with the shape of the coat, red. I kept a grey Windsmoor coat of late mil's that's a similar shape and too big, but I think I'll get rid. I could get it altered, but it would be drastic. It's not even a great fabric composition tbh to warrant it.

My purple coat is very old, in fact I bumped into an old friend I haven't seen for ages today who said she liked it and I reminded her she was with me when I tried it on! It has a huge hood, so I feel like an elf from Lord of the Rings with the it up.
