@TheOliphantintheRoom can we be BFF? The fact that a male consort cannot be a king because King is intrinsically senior to queen bothers me a LOT. But I am usually told to "be quiet dear" when I bring this up. To my mind, it just shows how far our language has to go before we can consider it even vaguely gender neutral.

I'm pretty sure the Queen consort IS known as Queen WHOEVER. The phrase, "King George and Queen Mary" seems to rattle around in my head as one I have read/heard a lot from books/shows regarding them. So Katherine will be Queen consort, Queen Katherine but she won't be "The Queen".

Yes re Camilla - she was supposed to be Princess Consort as a sop to Diana fans but it's not clear that will still happen and that she won't be queen. I get the sense she likes the stuff she can choose but the big formal stuff she's less keen on. But if Philip can retire, no reason she can't too surely?

ElspethFlashman · 11/11/2019 12:04

I suspect both C + C will dial down the tours after he becomes King.

HMQ has. Its normal. That's what Princes of Wales' are for!

I can see them doing one or two a year tops and William having to do the rest.

QueenOfTheAndals · 11/11/2019 12:07

She will be. HM The Queen is the title, regardless of whether they are the monarch or the monarch's wife. It's when they're widowed that they officially become Queen TheirName.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but I can't see Camilla outliving Charles. She has a 40 year smoking history and even though she supposedly gave up quite a few years ago, those pigeons have an unfortunate habit of coming home to roost. She could well have COPD already for example, and we wouldn't know.

Charles on the other hand looked as healthy as a horse on the beach in Barbados. He could go on forever.

Disfordarkchocolate · 11/11/2019 12:08

I think Charles always looks like he enjoys royal tours. Camilla, I'm sure I've heard doesn't cope with heat well, I have a lot of sympathies if that's the case.

HM became Queen in her mid 20s - she toured for decades. She has only cut down as she has become elderly - which in all fairness, C & C may well be already when the Queen passes.

But it is a different world now - no long sea trip to foreign parts - a quick flight on BA can get you to most places.

BertrandRussell · 11/11/2019 12:38

I reckon Her Maj will outlive Charles.....

Rhubarbisevil · 11/11/2019 12:41

Here is an interesting comparison photo on instagram - Meghan is wearing a hat similar to Princess Diana at Remembrance.

TheOliphantintheRoom · 11/11/2019 12:42

I don't think you're correct here. The Queen Mother was Queen Elizabeth whilst her DH was King. After his death she was styled HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother to avoid confusion as her DD became Queen Elizabeth II.

So Kate will be Queen Catherine.

i think

SenecaFalls · 11/11/2019 13:48

Actually "Her Majesty" or HM is not part of her official title; it is her "style". Her official title in the UK is "Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of her other realms and territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith."

One thing I get picky about here in the US is constant reference in the media to her being "Queen of England." Technically speaking, there is no such title, and of course, it ignores the rest of the UK. There is also a bit of controversy when politicians in Scotland refer to her as "Queen of Scots," which technically she would be only if Scotland were not part of the UK.

I defer to @SenecaFalls when it comes to these thing...

It's just the colour and the size that's similar, Diana's hat's brim is turned up, and Meghan's is sloping down, it gives a completely different shape and movement.

Also, Diana was tall, Meghan isn't.

So does SF say Kate will be Queen Catherine or not?

QueenOfTheAndals · 11/11/2019 14:34

She doesn't! But I'm pretty sure that she'll officially be The Queen but called Queen Kate by the media and public!! She'll be Queen Catherine if she's widowed.

Princess Diana was never Princess Diana - but that never stopped anyone calling her that! Grin

SunsetBoulevard3 · 11/11/2019 15:47

She was Princess of Wales, what do you mean?

SunsetBoulevard3 · 11/11/2019 15:48

Just looking at kate's hair from yesterday again. It is absolutely gorgeous in that up do. She looked so caring with HM.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 11/11/2019 16:02

I wonder if Meghan's choice of hat is deliberately modelled on Diana? I sometimes wonder if she looks at photos of Diana and chooses similar styles. Arriving with Archie off the plane in a bobble hat in SA and the photo of Harry in a virtually identical hat off the plane abroad at a similar age, I wondered then if she had chosen the hat to duplicate that photo.

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 11/11/2019 16:07

I've thought that often too @SunsetBoulevard3 as it seems to happen a lot, but that would be a bit weird, wouldn't it? I then assumed that no matter what she or DOC wear / do, likely journalists will be able to find something in the archives resembling Diana and will highlight that as she was photographed so much.

I do hope that Meghan does have proper advisors who advise on protocol rather than leaving her to just wing it when it comes to royal events like Remembrance Day!

FiveTwoFaster · 11/11/2019 16:20

I always wonder if Camilla has really given up smoking. I had to quit about 7 times and once it was for 2 years then I took it up again like an idiot. I haven’t had a cigarette for four years but I’m not confident enough to say I have given up! I amused myself the other day by reading an account that she liked boxes of fags and ashtrays in every room with a match sticking up out of solid silver match boxes so she didn’t have to make any effort at all to so much as eke a match out to strike it! She has taken to being royal like a duck to water given she wasn’t one for 50 years!

SenecaFalls · 11/11/2019 16:29

So does SF say Kate will be Queen Catherine or not?

In the UK, there is only one “The Queen” at a time so the Queen Regnant or Queen Consort is always HM The Queen. But this is more a matter of style than title. The “style” is not to use the given name in the UK. But style conventions can change according to the circumstances. So, for example, if Kate as Queen, is in the US or the Netherlands, she would be referred to rightly at times as Queen Catherine because we do not have a queen in the US and there is a “The Queen” in the Netherlands who is Maxima.

Also Kate will sign her name as Catherine R., the R being an abbreviation for Regina. So she will essentially be signing her name as “Catherine the Queen.”

vivacian · 11/11/2019 16:30

I honestly don't see the point of Charles becoming king in his mid seventies.

If he becomes King, it will be because he has been chosen by God, that's the point.

She was Princess of Wales, what do you mean?

She was HRH The Princess of Wales and then later Diana, Princess of Wales but never Princess Diana (of Wales or not).

TheOliphantintheRoom · 11/11/2019 16:31

She'll be Queen Catherine if she's widowed

According to my quick Google exhaustive research she'll be Queen Catherine as soon as William becomes king- she won't have to wait for him to die!

superfandango · 11/11/2019 16:32

@SunsetBoulevard3 If I remember right women who marry born princes only take on their husband's title and don't take on one of their own. So Princess Charlotte is a born princess so has that title but Diana was Diana, Princess of Wales and not Princess Diana. Princess Michael of Kent is probably the most obvious example of this.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 11/11/2019 16:35

Arriving with Archie off the plane in a bobble hat in SA and the photo of Harry in a virtually identical hat off the plane abroad at a similar age

That's a precedent set by the Cambridges I think. Young George was very often dressed identically to young William as a toddler.
