Previous thread. I think we'll be a bit short of royal outfits as they're all off on their holidays atm. But Kate's regatta is coming up next week, hence the thread title!

Same rules as always - keep it light, critique the clothes rather than the women, and don't believe anything printed in the Daily Mail Grin

I'd say the royals were tone deaf but I'm starting to think it's more that they actually don't care what people think!

The latest on Andrew and Epstein. DM link but it's pretty damning - why was he staying with JE after he'd been convicted of sex offences?

I also find it quite hideous than one of the projects Andrew supports is for women who've been trafficked into the sex trade.

Royals like Andrew definitely don’t care.

I think HM is naturally thrifty, and she does take the train to Sandringham, but I’m sure she flew to Balmoral; she’s 93 and I think she deserves the comfort; as she’s there for a couple of months.

Prince Charles; i don’t know; i think he is discreet, but looking at Camilla’s deep tan I suspect a private jet and someone’s yacht have been part of their summer holiday.

The Cambridges have been seen taking commercial flights to Mustique.
However for work visits; they use a helicopter like a car, but they also need to get back as they have kids, who like most parents they want to see.

The Sussexes. No different to the rest of them, however it is hypocritical for Harry to speak at a climate change conference and Meghan to put Greta Thunberg on her Vogue cover. The Sussexes are either ignoring or getting very bad pr advice..

QueenOfTheAndals · 18/08/2019 08:52

HM definitely has good PR if people really think she's thrifty! I don't think any member of the royal family is!!

Hmm not sure Queen - she may not be as thrifty as some but my grandad grew up very poor & more importantly lived through rationing. He died a millionaire a few times over but he was still thrifty as he always said you never know what’s around the corner. (He wasn’t mean though - I think there is a difference).

GotToGoMyOwnWay · 18/08/2019 08:56

I accept that it may well be different for HM though.

Wildorchidz · 18/08/2019 08:58

The only member of the RF who has any inkling about the word thrifty is Anne.

QueenOfTheAndals · 18/08/2019 09:04

Interesting and balanced piece in the Guardian about Harry and climate change. The author calls on him to start practising what he preaches but also points out that the environmental crisis is due to a lot more than just private jets. The number one way to help is by having less children so Jane Goodall wasn't wrong.

It makes me feel a bit better about my holiday the other week - we flew but we only have one child!!! Grin

Actually the one way all the royals are thrifty is when it comes to paying their staff! Jobs in the royal household are notoriously badly paid.

Bad luck for Meghan. After years of supporting herself and climbing up the celebrity pole she snags a multi-millionaire just as people start to question his spending.

“He seems to be really growing”

Wouldn’t you expect that in a baby?

FaithHowellsYellowCoat · 18/08/2019 09:31

She is when it comes to her Barbour - I think I read that she was offered a new one but just wanted hers rewaxed. Don’t know if that’s true though!

QueenOfTheAndals · 18/08/2019 09:34

When it comes to aristos and their Barbours, isn't it a bit like furniture? They don't buy them, they inherit them!

OP posts:
ElspethFlashman · 18/08/2019 09:58

There's a photo of Charles in his old Barbour and it's all patched.

BertrandRussell · 18/08/2019 10:10

“She is when it comes to her Barbour - I think I read that she was offered a new one but just wanted hers rewaxed. Don’t know if that’s true though!”

That’s not a frugal thing- it’s a posh thing. Posh people judge someone with a new Barbour more than mumsnetters judge someone giving their baby a fruit shoot.

QueenOfTheAndals · 18/08/2019 10:29

I used to work with a rather snobbish woman who thought herself very posh. She came in one day boasting about the brand new Barbour she was sporting and told one of the men in the office (his parents owned a crumbling pile in Shropshire) that she didn't know why he wore an old one when you could get them brand new at a good price!

The Cambridges regularly use The Duke of Westminster's private jet.

I suppose the royals can't fly commercial with the general public due to security issues.

QueenOfTheAndals · 18/08/2019 10:38

I don't see why they can't - weren't W&K spotted on a Ryan Air or EasyJet flight some years ago? And I assume that when they do long haul tours they fly first class on a commercial flight.

OP posts:
QueenOfTheAndals · 18/08/2019 10:42

Admittedly trickier with kids.
Imagine the tales that could be told if they didn't prebook seats on Ryan Air and George or Charlotte were seated next to strangers!

AdaColeman · 18/08/2019 11:17

I think Charles is quite canny in planning his holidays. He has an annual trip to the Caribbean, which is a combination of a couple of official visits and the rest of the time private holiday, but the official visits mean that the cost is kept low for Charles.

As to Harry now being a climate change warrior, well that's just a joke!
I don't think any of the RF give a FF what the public think about them, even though their privileged position is held only by the acquiescence of the masses.

ElspethFlashman · 18/08/2019 11:25

Camilla goes (or used to go) on a sun holiday with her sister every year too. But she keeps it very private.

BertrandRussell · 18/08/2019 11:26

“The Cambridges regularly use The Duke of Westminster's private jet.“ But that’s a special carbon neutral private jet.....

ElspethFlashman · 18/08/2019 11:26

I think Harry and Meghan are as thick as two small rocks tbh.

I don't like either of them. By God, they like themselves though.

itswinetime · 18/08/2019 11:34

Royals absolutely can fly commercial! It might not be as easy as it is for you and me and of course it will probably be BA first class not easyJet but it can be done!

For me the issue is if you put yourself out there as a climate change campaigner (which is great a good cause to champion IMO). It comes across as hypocritical and patronising if you aren't practicing what you preach.

Take Charles he speaks about climate change has been for ages but he has also taken steps to improve things he does some of them maybe PR stunts like the bio fuel car when he is driven everywhere in normal cars but it makes things seem less do as i say! I think harry would do well to look at that example if he wants to be successful! I'm sure lots of it is PR and spin but it works!

I agree I doubt they really care what we think but if they really wanted to get the message across they would think about my how it all comes across!

Andrew is just vile he is on a whole different level to the others!
