I never wear dresses, I feel I’m too short 5’2 and at a size 16 I look like a ship in full sail.

DD has convinced me that this looks nice and will be lovely for summer evenings and holidays.

It feel very comfortable but i feel like a lumpen blob. I know I need to lose weight but I also need to look nice while I’m at least trying.

Completely honest opinions please as I’ve kept the ticket on it so far just in case it needs to go back.

Thanks

I like it! Is it the New Look one? I almost bought one the other day 😊

Yorkshirelady · 22/04/2019 21:07

The pattern on the dress isn't to my taste....but as a size 16 myself I understand why you've chosen the shape. I have an ample (but perfectly formed) bosom - just like you - and I find that v shapes and (believe it or not) high necks with cap / short sleeves work too. I hope you don't mind me mentioning it....but the pictures make your bust look a little lumpy...you might need a better bra (I don't mean to be offensive - so please forgive me) but I often find that if the underwear is right, then the outerwear looks how its meant to. You have a figure...so flaunt your waist too...get a belt and some matching shoes :-) I think you're really brave for asking for advice on mumsnet. Have a lovely summer and I wish I had as much confidence as you x

ketchupormayo · 22/04/2019 21:08

Really like that!

gerispringer · 22/04/2019 21:09

It’s a no from me too. Please avoid polyester, horrible and sweaty and really bad for the environment.cotton, linen, viscose or silk much better. Don’t like the manky brown print either. Something with a lower neckline would be more flattering on you.

Itsnotme123 · 22/04/2019 21:13

I personally think the dress looks dowdy. But fit etc is fine.

IncrediblySadToo · 22/04/2019 21:22

Dowdy

I’m going for the honest answer...

I’m glad you’re not keeping it. It’s definitely makes you look old & frumpy!!

Dresses are a bloody nightmare. I don’t own any to go out in (I have one I sometimes wear at home because it feels nice, but looks awful!!). I look like a bloody frumpy, matronly, lampshade in dresses!

I’m your age, but you are taller than me (yes, really! 🤣. I’m barely 5ft!) and slimmer, but I’m equally busty. My friend is more your height and size and really doesn’t suit dresses either. I think for short, booby, not waif thin women the style of dress User at 17:44 posted is a good style and in that kind of colour.

Unless you find one that feels great and YOU love, just stick to separates, I do - because there’s nothing worse than wearing clothes that make you feel matronly, fat and old. 🌷

DantesInferno · 22/04/2019 21:28

I think you would look amazing in www.newlook.com/uk/womens/clothing/dresses/curves-grey-snake-print-wrap-midi-dress/p/611138808?comp=Browse (posted above)
its a good pattern for hiding bumps and lumps

Dowdy13 · 22/04/2019 21:28

Ah thanks so much for all your replies, please don’t any of you feel like you are offending me, I want an honest opinion.

I’m not keeping the dress, the second one can go in the charity shop bag too. I will keep looking for something that is flattering but if I can’t find it I will stick to separates. Unfortunately skirts are a nightmare too as I don’t look good with tops tucked into a skirt and a top over a skirt is frumpville.

Why couldn’t I have been 6ft and a size 10

Shaven treads full three full thread but..
YOU shouldn’t need convincing.. it means you don’t feels fabulous in it.

In my honest opinion it really doesnt look good .. I was shocked at how we how many “it looks lovely” were on the first page page. YOU could and will look anazing in right dress, whatever your sysize. THIS Just looks frumpy and does nothing for you.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 22/04/2019 21:35

Love the grey one!

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 22/04/2019 21:36

GOsh... excuse my typos. My iPad has A mind of its own. Just seen your update.... glad you aren’t keeping it .

florentina1 · 22/04/2019 21:37

I would have a look at Roman Originals they have lots of reasonable priced dresses. I really liked the first dress though. When we look I’m the mirror we see out faults that others don’t see. I think you have a lovely womanly figure. Hope that does not make me sound creepy

ooItsAoBeautifulDayNow · 22/04/2019 21:42

Think lower neckline would help massively. A little matronly at the mo due to your lovely lady jumps!

Other than that if it had a more v neckline i would add some chunky jewellery and a waterfall black jacket as I think leather with the print may be a bit much. And a platform heel - thick heel to match the platform and give a bit of height to make the length more flattering.

Honestly though, if you aren't comfortable and confident in something you're wearing it will be obvious.

So over to you :)

RavenLG · 22/04/2019 21:51

Animal prints are very in right now, I’m really surprised at how many are saying the fit of the first dress is frumpy. The 2nd dress is terrible and too small but a few have said it looks good?

I think this would suit your shape and is a fun print.

That grey snakeskin monstrosity that 2 PPs linked too needs burning.

And Joe Browns is definitely frumpsville.. maybe if you’re under 35 and a size 8 it could work but not very fashionable imo

Terramirabilis · 22/04/2019 21:53

Haven't read the full thread but my quick thoughts are that the neckline is too high for you (need a scoop or v neck) and the waistline is also too high for your body (does look a little like there's not much to your top half apart from bust due to overly high neckline and waistline which is entirely the dress's fault not yours). I do like the dress generally.

greenpop21 · 22/04/2019 21:53

I think it looks nice. Though look for v neck in future for ample bossomage as it will elongate the neck. of you know a seamstress you could get that put in.
But if you don't like yourself in it, don't keep it.

ooItsAoBeautifulDayNow · 22/04/2019 21:55

High waist mid calf skirt with some volume - make the most of that waist you've got a lovely figure. You could buy a size bigger than you need and pay a local seamstress to adapt. for you so it's a lovely fit. What do you think of attached ideas?

With a simple top (maybe Bardot neckline) and a strapless bra you would look knockout. Same with a simple block colour tee.

Don't be afraid of block colour rather than pattern prints either :)

Say which of these you like / hate and we can hone for ya!

Top half of second dress(V neck and fitted) and loose bottom half. However, I am a similar age and a size 10/12 and wouldn't go near pleats! They can only be pulled off by the very young and slim or hipsters of any age!

Pieceofpurplesky · 22/04/2019 21:59

I am older than you and i wouldn't wear it. Looks frumpy and '80s landlady-ish'.
You need a dress with more shape to suit your lovely figure

chocolatelog · 22/04/2019 22:00

Looks great, keep it!

Prisonbreak · 22/04/2019 22:00

I’m not loving the print and I’d have guessed you were much much older than you are based on the pic. You have a lovely shape, a different style would flatter you much more

Prisonbreak · 22/04/2019 22:06

Oh and I have a 30 second rule when I try on clothes. If I don’t love it within 30 seconds then it’s a no. If it takes longer than 30 seconds then it’s not for you.
