I never wear dresses, I feel I’m too short 5’2 and at a size 16 I look like a ship in full sail.

DD has convinced me that this looks nice and will be lovely for summer evenings and holidays.

It feel very comfortable but i feel like a lumpen blob. I know I need to lose weight but I also need to look nice while I’m at least trying.

Completely honest opinions please as I’ve kept the ticket on it so far just in case it needs to go back.

Thanks

Dress is nice enough but you don't like it.
Return it and get something you like.

user1474894224 · 22/04/2019 19:44

I like it. Although I would be more tempted to wear it to work. Have you thought about v-neck dresses? I''ve ordered....but not got yet....uk.monsoon.co.uk/view/product/uk_catalog/mon_1,mon_1.2/6453167916 (I know it's expensive but the only maxi dress I have I got 9 years ago and still wear regularly.....) This one I'm in today is tk maxx. Excuse the creases as it's linen and been worn all day. But it's v-neck so doesn't maximise my boobs....

To try and answer the questions, I’m 46, this is from New Look (I know, shopping with DD and I think I’m still 16 in the head).

I think it looks like an old lady dress as it’s on an older lady (me) iyswim.

This is how it would look on a younger, slimmer person.

Not my personal style but I think it looks good on you.
Nice shape and length, looks cool.

Mokepon · 22/04/2019 19:46

Not an old lady dress!

Cherylshaw · 22/04/2019 19:47

I like it but would wear it with a chunky silver belt

AdaColeman · 22/04/2019 19:47

I agree with your DD, it will be lovely for warm evenings and summer holidays.
The colourway/pattern could be dressed up with different coloured accessories to give it a variety of looks, so it would be a useful holiday dress, and it looks as though it will pack well too.

Don't take it back!

WhatNow40 · 22/04/2019 19:47

The dress looks nice on you. It doesn't look like the same dress from new look though!!!

BlackHillsofDakota · 22/04/2019 19:47

You certainly don't look like a lumpen blob or however it was you described yourself!
You have a very similar shape to me and I'd wear it. It looks lovely, wear it!

SleepWarrior · 22/04/2019 19:47

Oh that looks great! Just a nice relaxed summer dress - flattering but not too glam so that you'd feel overdressed. Not overly keen on the pattern but I don't think it matters at all. If they have another print/colour then I'd get both.

AWaspOnAWindowReturns · 22/04/2019 19:48

Another vote to keep the dress OP.

Wildrose19 · 22/04/2019 19:49

I think the waist is too high and agree with pp that a lower neckline would be better too.

Dowdy13 · 22/04/2019 19:50

The elasticated ‘waist’ is an odd height, I’m very short but it doesn’t sit on my waist, it feels like it should be from under my bust. But looking at the model pic it looks like it’s on her waist. I’m undecided. I know it will be cool and comfortable on holiday. I would be wearing wedges or flats with it probably.

I would like to try dresses for an evening out round a few bars with work colleagues who are much younger, trendier and slimmer I should add. What sort of dress should I be looking at? I have quite a mum tum.

Jamhandprints · 22/04/2019 19:50

I think you look great in it.

Jellybean100 · 22/04/2019 19:51

I don’t think you look like a blob AT ALL. I do however think you should go for a wrap type dress to suit your figure. There’s so many nice ones around in Next and George (Asda) x

ScarlettDarling · 22/04/2019 19:54

Sorry op but I don't like it. It makes you look bigger than a size 16. It's not awful but it's not great either and I don't think it's very summery.

I think you'd look so much nicer in something v necked without the unflattering waist (is it an elasticated waist?). You should try on dresses in a range of styles and see what works for you.

It’s definitely this dress, how it can look so different on though!

Personally I don't think it suits you, looks like an old lady dress to me.
There must be something more flattering for you, you have a lovely figure x

kattekitt · 22/04/2019 19:58

You have a lovely figure op, I don’t like the dress but style is a personal choice. I’ve had some lovely dresses from www.scarlettandjo.com/
hide a multitude of lumps and bumps, although I don’t think you need to worry.

whitehalleve · 22/04/2019 20:00

Keep it

1frenchfoodie · 22/04/2019 20:00

I’m not keen on the dress, on the model or on you. The neck and waist are mot flattering. It reminds me of my nana’s friend who has a good 40 years on you which is probably colouring my view. But if you trust DD’s opinion and she likes it on then that counts for more than my opinion as a random on the internet.

helpmum2003 · 22/04/2019 20:00

Personally I think it looks like an old lady dress - sorry. I'm older than you and wouldn't wear it. The pleats, neckline and fabric aren't flattering to anyone - don't like it on the model either.....

oatmilk4breakfast · 22/04/2019 20:00

I think it could be good with your hair up, a pair of heels and a large bold single colour belt around the middle - something to break up the pattern and give you some definition which would be more flattering. But that’s only my opinion / if you feel good in it, wear it! 👍

NiteFlights · 22/04/2019 20:01

What’s it made of? It looks like polyester, and that won’t be cool or comfortable in hot weather.

I seem to be in the minority but i don’t like it. There’s nothing wrong with your shape at all, but the very high neck combined with the slightly odd high elasticated waist is really unflattering. From the side it makes it look as though your bust is pulling the waist up and the sleeves forward (due to the cut of the sleeves I think).

The combination of colour, print, pleats and high neckline make it look almost wintry, and too old for you.

I think you should be looking for something with a v-neck and a waist at the natural waistline. A midi shirt dress could be great on you. Don’t give up on dresses, you’ll look lovely in a different style.
