got to say apu- even i think your sons hair is a teeny bit too long

ApuNahasapeemapetilon · 14/07/2007 10:34

probably yes!!!!

kittenlover · 14/07/2007 12:25

Hair totally depends on the boy in question.

My DS1 has really thick coarse hair that grows up and out rather than down - no chance of boden surfer look there although he is super handsome - so we keep it short (not too short - agree with the chav comments - we live in Newcastle!) and tidy. Plus he's the sweatiest boy in the world so it makes sense.

DS2 on the other hand has soft silky golden curls and we've let it grow for the moment (he's 2 - maybe we'll relent in a couple of years - although my mother would disinherit me if I cut it!).

Going to post some pics on my profile so I can show them off too!

havent read other replies, but I have a 2 and a half yr old with long-ish very curly hair. I think long hair on boys is cool, as long as its not flopping into their eyes constantly. Hate hate hate crew cuts.

i don't think long hair looks surferish. well maybe if it is shoulder length but not shorter than that. loads of the boys round here have it passed collar length and no sea for miles!

HelenLoveJoyOfSpringfield · 15/07/2007 00:53

My nephew visited today. His hair is in a bob. It looks stupid. From behind he looks like a girl.

His older brother has a lovely haircut, not clipped or shaved, just a nice boy haircut.

ohmylife · 15/07/2007 17:24

when I took ds for haircut, age 2, hairdresser asked if I was going for surfer look or little boy look. Opted for latter, curls would have gone out not down so would have looked like a wig anyway. My cousin left her ds hair so long he got a complex about being called a girl and strangers stroking his curls he practically dragged her to the barbers and insisted they cut it off, aged 7!

JoolsToo · 15/07/2007 17:24

I'm not keen

shinysink · 15/07/2007 17:29

DS always had long hair owing to his complete dislike of anyone with a pair of scissors or clippers. Went hysterical everytime. He's now 4.5 and until a week ago had longish hair. However, a week ago I discovered he was infected with headlice so held him down and put the clippers on number 4 - job done. Treated the headlice - all gone now.
I never wanted DS to have the shaved head look - my DS now looks like a thug - just needs the earring to complete the look! However, this is not an ideal world and the reality is that this is the only way. Couldn't even begin to get a nit comb through the long hair as he was hysterical - with short hair it was no problem - took about 50 of the buggers off his head!

Lazycow · 15/07/2007 20:38

I don't like long hair on boys but then I like short haor on men as well. I love the nape of the neck thing too. Plus ds looks pretty straggly with long haor, it just looks shapless and sticks out everywhere. It is too fine & straight to look good l,ong at the moment. Also I really cannot be doing with the washing and combing of it. I would cut my dd's hair (if I had one) not just ds's.

Spidermama · 15/07/2007 20:40

I love long haired boys. They're everywhere in Brighton. Gorgeous!

I think it's so sad to crop little boys hair so they look like prisoners or soldiers.

Spidermama · 15/07/2007 20:41

I tend to fancy men with long hair.

Crew cuts look to straight and boring to me.

mabelmurple · 15/07/2007 20:44

Oh yes Spidermama - Neil Oliver from Coast - ding dong

Spidermama · 15/07/2007 20:46

Mmmmm. Not to mention him. Come to Spider.

mabelmurple · 15/07/2007 20:49

Don't know that one, Spider, but cleaned up a bit and minus the beard he might do!

Spidermama · 15/07/2007 20:58

PMSL @~ 'cleaned up a bit'. He's been in battle fgs! I've just had to google Neil Oliver and I feel he needs a beard to carry off that hair. It's not balanced.

Do tell him if you come across him won't you?

mabelmurple · 15/07/2007 21:12

I didn't link to that picture of Neil Oliver as I don't think it does him justice. Cannot agree about the beard, though - there is such a thing as too much hair .

Why aren't the italics working?

Spidermama · 15/07/2007 21:14

Aren't they?

mabelmurple · 15/07/2007 21:16

Not on my computer, no.

mabelmurple · 15/07/2007 21:17

Bugger, they seem to be working now .

moljam · 15/07/2007 21:18

both my ds(6 and 18 months) have long hair, obviously i think they look lovely! we live in cornwall so theyre forever getting called surf dudes which 6 year old loves-he wants to be surf dude!

Clary · 16/07/2007 00:51

see now neither of my boys look like "prisoners or soldiers".

But they don't have girls' hair either. There is a middle way y'know.

BTW when I was young I had short hair and was often taken for a boy, the shame, can still recall it now < with embarrassment>

tigermoth · 16/07/2007 07:55

It is possible to combine longish hair with combats and army T shirts, you know! Why this assumption that the 'army look' on little boys has to be accompanied by shaved heads?

My 7 year old son looks best when his hair is mid way over his ears, long layers in this hair, still showing some of his neck at the back, but nothing shaved.

He likes combat pants, but wants me to buy him a smart black suit jacket to wear with them

Anyway, ANYTHING is preferable to wearing those NYC baseball caps perched to one side of your head, as if about to fall off. My older son (13) went through an intense phase of collecting them but thankfully is getting over it now.

Bumblebee1980a · 06/05/2021 14:46

Long hair is best in my opinion.

I can't stand boys with really short hair. I think it can look quite rough.
