NW that is the smuggest thing I've heard and well-deservedly so ;)

I think the whole wedding dress culture needs an overhaul, too much white princessy things, puts a damper on the whole business IMO.

Redandblue11 · 26/03/2019 16:56

Oh poor Xindog how scary Flowers

So, I acquired a couple of trousers from the Cos sale. I also had never really got stuff from there and was really pleased with the fit and quality IRL. So, I got this checked ones and a pair of high waisted wide legged jeans that I cannot see online . I would have never considered them online but trying them was a game changer for me, specially as the material composition says wool and polyester ... the idea of itching would have put me off, but they are actually very soft.

XingMing · 26/03/2019 20:04

COS is great, but it's a shop you have to try IRL. It took a while, but once | washed the starch out of the jeans I wore to the V&A (having had them nine months, so long past any possibility of a return) they turned out to be exactly right, if a half size larger than necessary. Good for fat days!

XingDog is feeling better, and thanks you all for the kind wishes. She's feeling happier now she's home and secure in her pack. The meds help, of course, but she's been outdoors watching the birds in the sun, on the patio (temporary fence erected) and has been for three little strolls.

XingMing · 27/03/2019 08:22

Bonjour Mariannes. Quick thought for Denimes: if you glance through today's Times 2, there's a shout for some wedding outfits from Whistles which has just launched a range... in sizes 6-16, of white things. Anna Murphy doesn't do wedding dresses but seems to like some of these. Worth a look, perhaps?

Redandblue11 · 27/03/2019 09:00

Bounjour!
Well Xing my Cos purchases were inspired after many of you talking about the quality and us popping into the kings road store, and with a 50% off I decided to give it a go.

Yes, I was also going to mention Whistles and their new wedding range, however after a quick look at their styles none of them is doing anything for me. But then again, is not me getting married! so might be worth a look.

Redandblue11 · 27/03/2019 09:12

I would like some opinions on the topic: heels with socks (the lacy delicate type socks, not white cotton on a walking sandal...)
This is something that a couple of years back I saw in magazines and maybe a celebrity or two, but I do not think I saw IRL.
I hate the transition from cold to hot in the seasons ... so I was considering... (really?? Pls someone wake me up and tell me this is not a good idea)

On a going out situation a nice outfit and perhaps heels or block sandals with small socks... nothing too eye catching.
Putting a couple of photos to ensure we all visualise the same thing, but I am not sure I would wear the first pair of socks like that.
What are your views??

Red, I quite like the look (now I've got used to it a couple of years on) but would not wear it. Because... this is Cornwall, my DH doesn't get loving fashion in its pure sense, age. The inevitable ridicule (and/or diagnosis of early dementia) would deter me completely. Scaredy cat, c'est moi!

botemp · 27/03/2019 09:37

Mumnset needs a wagging finger emoticon.

I think MN would implode from overuse Flo 🙈

But, yes, I distinctly remember you and my mother (from beyond the veil) screaming to get it already but I had to go and be sensible. Ugh. Must work on that.

I put that sock trend down as Instagram got bored and watched a Sex and The City marathon. And then I think Gucci under AM ran with it? Or maybe AM had a SATC binge and Instagram followed suit. I can't remember exactly anymore. Anyhow, I don't dislike visible socks but it has to work for you, I have very distinctive ankles that go in so it helps accentuate that sometimes but I don't go mad with it, it may not work as well with cankles and I personally would never with open toed shoes. I think I featured it with derbies and ankle boots possibly in the first advent calendar? Parisiennes have been doing visible socks for forever.

Le ridicule ne tue pas, and all that, but I don't think I'd dare the socks and heels trend. I do wear socks with trainers and jeans though, even if they're visible. I hate having cold feet.

timeisnotaline · 27/03/2019 10:47

I think it needs a block heel. I have been thinking I should do it with oxford type shoes but I’m not sure about heels. I don’t have many block heels either and really really don’t need more shoes. I would need to buy socks that work too ie ones without holes

I ate at the lobster place bo thanks very much! I needed an early night and restaurant kitchens don’t even open till past 7 so worked well :)

quirkychick · 27/03/2019 11:06

I hope your dog is better soon Flowers, Xing.

I've been a bit quiet as we've had family here for a couple of weeks. Nice, but it's also good to get back to some peace and quiet-ish.

I would do visible socks, but not with open toes, I think. The first photo is nice, but part of me thinks you could just wear tights like that anyway. I often do visible socks with trainers as 1) I get horribly cold feet and ankles and 2) I've never found any of those trainer socks that don't disappear under your foot in a most uncomfortable way! Like, Xing, I think Norfolk wouldn't be ready for it Grin.

ImYourWomanJonSnow · 27/03/2019 14:46

Hi all, I have been quiet again, travelling for work etc but I have been enjoying the Dior reports and general lurking.

Accidentally I have been thinking about socks + shoes a lot lately (just like every spring, the transition to lighter yet still nippy weather throws me into hosiery conundrums).

Several of my younger colleagues have been wearing visible socks + shoes/trainers + mid length skirts and I have to say at the beginning I didn't like them (some of the socks are cats, ladybirds and the like) but now that I have got used to the sight I see the appeal (and having the envy of them being able to take the smart casual office dress code more in casual direction, with a hint of irony; I'm too old for irony). So these are my observations: cotton socks don't look great with low cut shoes, they bunch up and raise from shoes like dough; socks and open toe heels don't last the day, the socks stretch and crinkle as you move; this is for me personally - skirt plus heavy boots in socks and bare legs doesn't work if you have large sized foot but size 10 body, I look like a plant in a pot.

Redandblue11 · 27/03/2019 18:49

I will report back if I do any sock+shoe!
I have 4.5 / 5 shoe size and I am reasonably tall so I am hoping I will not be in plant pot territory Confused
Anyhow, if I take the plunge I will report!

ImYourWomanJonSnow · 28/03/2019 10:26

Lol I see why my analogy with plant pot didn’t work (made perfect sense in my head:). I meant this my leg in

ImYourWomanJonSnow · 28/03/2019 10:28

I have attempted socks and shoes and culottes this morning but I felt self conscious so went for invisible sock. Luckily it’s warm enough. Will keep trying. So far I only managed to figure out what doesn’t work...

Filtch · 28/03/2019 10:38

Anyone else with a small head who struggles to find sunglasses to fit? The sunglasses falling off your head look doesn't work for me Sad

XingMing · 28/03/2019 12:26

@red, the Saskia trenchcoat is in the Hobbs sale... quick, quick... eek!

Redandblue11 · 28/03/2019 14:17

Xing I know!! My DH already bought it for me full price Angry
I have worn it twice so I cannot exactly try to stitch label back and pretend is unworn ...

botemp · 28/03/2019 14:33

Buy a discounted one and return it with the original receipt if that's still within the return period, Red. Or you can always go in and ask for the discount. Occasionally they'll give you the discount, sometimes as a gift card.

Today I have learnt I do my makeup like a 50+ old. Also use quite a lot of the recommended products, or what I'm going with, I've been channeling a really cool 70yo make up artist's lead all these years without knowing about it and she's touched some pretty cool faces, so I must be doing something right Halo

Article here as I figured it might interest Flo.

Filtch, regardless of face size, no one is supposed to wear sunglasses on top of their their heads. We're all supposedly giving glasses aficionados palpitations and panic attacks whenever we do this Hmm I'm assuming children's sunglasses are not what you're looking for? I think Oakley sells special narrow ones but they're obviously quite sporty. Just from fitting things, I find Miu Miu quite tight fitting, and on occasion Prada. Though it shouldn't really be brand dependant as they all come out of the same two factories in Italy. Chanel has a couple that fit closely as well. Avoid Céline Envy

Filtch · 28/03/2019 15:13

Thanks botemp I'll have a look at those brands. And no children's sunglasses 🕶 sent really the look I'm going for!

Floisme · 29/03/2019 10:27

Thanks for that article bo. Hell it all sounds like hard work Grin but some food for thought and some good tips. The point about not trying too hard for an exact match with foundation was really interesting - I've spent my life doing that and only recently realised it was doing me no favours whatsoever. Which reminds me, Xing I'm still using your bronzer so thank you again. Every time I squeeze a bit out I think 'no way, that's far too dark' and every time I'm wrong!

XingMing · 29/03/2019 12:12

I've never found anything to touch it Flo, and believe me I have tubes and tubes of also-rans lurking in drawers! I live in terror of it being discontinued.

Redandblue11 · 29/03/2019 13:09

This might not belong here, more on the cosmetics thread ... but has anyone done Botox? This week after looking for too long into the bathroom mirror I thought... At some point that might be the only solution... not yet. But while a few months ago I would have said that is not for me ... why I find myself thinking that now??

Redandblue11 · 29/03/2019 13:17

Tutting might be appropriate here ...

botemp · 29/03/2019 13:34

Brexit induced anxiety might make me want to go stabby with needles? I'm not sure what's causing it, Red, potentially just something else that's bothering you (emotionally) and this is where you're focusing your thoughts on instead?

I'm personally not a fan of Botox, mostly because it's more an aesthetic than anything else, it's not anti-ageing as such and if it's done wrong or at the wrong time it just accentuates the disparity within the face itself and that only becomes more obvious as you get older. IMO it can be useful on very expressive people from their early thirties into early forties (if they feel they are prematurely ageing) as you still have a decent baseline so it's just a softening of expression that reads as ageing and will actually stop wrinkles from setting in deeply but they'd need a really good skincare routine alongside it.

Having seen you in person, I wouldn't say there's any need for it and I doubt it would really suit you. If you did want to pursue something that's a little beyond skincare I'd suggest looking into laser as it's much more about elevating your skin to looking your best as a whole whilst tackling things like fine lines, slackening and pigmentation.
It'll make you look good for your age rather than fighting it. Debbie Thomas in London is excellent (probably the best in the UK) for custom made treatments as she has several different lasers, it's a different price point though as it's a lot of investment up front.

Flo, yes the two shades warmer was interesting to me too. I've never been able to get a colour match with foundation as I inherited my mother's olive undertones and my father's pale skin. With concealer I have naturally gravitated to a shade or two warmer as my colour or lighter always makes me look washed out and sallow.
