I have watched SOM so many times but the older I get the more I find The Baronness the most fascinating character in it

queenofarles · 25/02/2019 21:47

Not a fan of that dress bit too tropical inspired is it not?

QueenOfTheAndals · 25/02/2019 21:47

Yes @BartonHollow! And Eleanor Parker was so wonderful in the role - made you see the vulnerability under the glitter. I think the Baroness really was in love with the Captain but was clear-sighted enough to let him go.

Yes, @BartonHollow @QueenOfTheAndals when I watch SOM now, it's with appreciation for the subtlety of the Baroness.
Beautifully played.

AFifthOfKoolAid · 25/02/2019 22:01

Hang on, how is this for royal style?

Tonight's host, the King of Morocco!

AnneEyhtMeyer · 25/02/2019 22:06

I'd rather have him than Charles!

BartonHollow · 25/02/2019 22:12

The Baronness had she had MN would have been wisely advised not to marry a man who had profically reproduced and would either be sneered at for wanting them to board or been given advice bordering on hysteria as to what she needed to do to ensure her DC met admissions criteria Grin

BartonHollow · 25/02/2019 22:13

DAMN YOU AUTOCORRECT

frugalkitty · 25/02/2019 22:14

I always liked the wedding dress in the SOM, it was a less lacy/more simple version of Princess Grace's give or take.

TrickOrRuddyTreat · 25/02/2019 22:17

I don’t like the blue dress in shape but the colour and pattern are ok. The Dior was a hideous colour and the fabric was far too thin and shiny. I quite liked the Valentino apart from the cape bit. I’ve loved all the day wear though.

Re Olivia Colman’s dress for the Vanity Fair party, it was Stella McCartney. And gorgeous Grin

Paradyning · 25/02/2019 22:58

Maria's wedding dress is one of my all time favs!

Grinchly · 25/02/2019 23:16

God that beige thing was so awful. Really really dreadful. So tight in all the wrong places.

And the heavy braided sleeves reminded me of a Joseph/ shepherd outfit at an expensive prep school nativity play.

IdaBWells · 25/02/2019 23:53

Regarding Meghan’s wardrobe she often needs three changes of clothes a day when on Royal trips and I imagine these need to be planned far in advance. With being pregnant and new to a role where she is having to learn what works and doesn’t in new styles for her on the job (as it were) it’s really a wonder she’s had so many outfits that have really worked. I do think she could benefit from bringing onboard a stylist as she’s likely to have a lot less time with a new baby (as she strikes me as someone who will be a very hands on mum). I do think her style is evolving and also we are getting used to a new way of being royal that people are adapting to. There must be some British designers who would love the opportunity to work with her. It would be very interesting if she went the Diana route and had someone from British Vogue work with her.

I love Catherine but am definitely glad to have another woman willing to push the boat out and try new things. I get the feeling Meghan does have a “look” in mind that she’s aiming for generally but sometimes it doesn’t always come together so successfully. Her fantastic makeup, hair, shoes and general American style grooming carry the day though!

The longer, larger dresses with lots of fabric don’t seem to work so well on Meghan as she is so petite she gets drowned out. It’s easy to see why she likes a minimalist, fitted look.

Daisypie · 26/02/2019 00:35

The Captain having an EA with the governess was the biggest red flag and she picked that.
I thought the strapless black dress hiked up under a white jacket was not a good look not the cream or blue evening dresses. I liked the red on arrival although perhaps it was a bit much for the tarmac. I also liked the casual look with the green jacket.

rosewater20 · 26/02/2019 00:36

@QueenOfTheAndals: I too would like to know more about the disappearance of Lalla Salma. From what I remember she was quite an active member of the royal family, so it seems odd that she just up and disappeared. Do you know any of the gossip or information about this? Has she really not been seen in two years?

rosewater20 · 26/02/2019 00:37

Love the colour and pattern of MM dress tonight but certainly not the cut or the shoulders. However, she is probably hot and uncomfortable and keen to be in something that isn't restricting.

7salmonswimming · 26/02/2019 01:07

I haven’t thought about this much, but actually MM’s sartorial faux pas (doesn’t fit quite right but a good idea on paper; doesn’t quite know how to do it sometimes so throws money at it; way more comfortable with the casual/informal look etc) could be quite reassuring. They might suggest that she’s got more going on upstairs than clothes, shoes, handbags, hair, jewelry and make-up. She’s been to university, hustled at this and that, landed a pretty stable job in a steady and not embarrassing serial drama in an industry that’s notoriously difficult to break into, with no silver spoon to be starting off with. If nothing else she has resilience and grit and stamina and determination and will likely have seen tough-ish times. She has ideas, and although she might not be the most profound thinker, she isn’t vacant. She seems engaged and interested while conducting her duties. She was sitting bolt upright and concentrating hard in those photos taken with the Moroccan king (which, incidentally, struck me as a training opportunity for his son rather than a diplomatic opportunity with the UK. It’s Harry and Meghan, after all). She was alert and paying attention. She’s an ex-TV actress getting an audience with the king of Morocco, and in the photos it looked like she was aware this was not the meeting of equals.

I kind of hope she sticks with not being a perfect clothes horse. It’d reassure me that she might have other priorities. Bit like Anne and HRH.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 26/02/2019 05:11

I really Ike the Carolina Herrera in RL
It looks like she bought it off the peg, so the pattern has been shown full width as was not planned in the original, design, so is not quite as flattering. I think it would look ethereal on her in a non pregnant state, with her hair Down. I would personally have the neckline recut to a V. I don’t like this fashion for high, round necks. Unless you have a B cup or less it is unflatttering.
So many items from meghan’s wardrobe in the last year, could be vastly improved by lopping off a few inches from hems, or tailoring.
Even the not her normal size items she could have recut.

MrFMercury · 26/02/2019 05:14

I wonder if the Dior looks a bit strange around her chest because she'd got breast pads on?
I admire the way the DoS manages so often to look as if she's relaxed and enjoying herself when you consider the endless news stories she's had to put up with. Some days getting out there at all probably feels demoralising knowing everything she wears, says, even the way she relates to her own body will be written about, pretty unpleasantly in some quarters. The blue dress isn't a look I'd normally like but I actually think it suited her and looked comfortable. I'm another who is in awe of her heels and ability to crouch down etc. I was a weeble when pg and found standing upright in trainers quite enough of a challenge!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 26/02/2019 05:19

This Royal variety care home dress is gorgeous and would look great on her non pregnant shape in the summer

Likewise, this other royal variety outfit, should be styled as the designer intended; no extra strap, cigarette pants and hair down.

She’s amassed a good wardrobe, especially coats in the last year, so with a bit of help, mainly seamstress and possibly a stylist, she would make fewer blunders.
Agree with pp, her casual styling is great. The duchess stuff needs some more work.

LifeCasting · 26/02/2019 06:31

Loving MM’s wardrobe -at look tenty sonetimes but she is there to work and looks comfortable.

The King of Morocco, mentioned upthread, is the biggest dude! Sooo chilled a laidback but sympathetic to his people. I wish our royals were more like this: wearing a vest or a dowdy old jumper! Brilliant.

Minimammoth · 26/02/2019 06:46

Am also noting that Teresa May is looking so much better in long line jackets.

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/02/2019 07:22

@LifeCasting A dude whose wife hasn't been seen in public for 2 years though! It's like the Moroccan equivalent of the Scientology men's wife.

@rosewater20 There's lots of rumours about Lalla Salma's whereabouts but nothing has been confirmed and the media in Morocco don't even speculate about it.

The blue dress is gorgeous on the catwalk. Do you think she had the skirt lined for decency? I can imagine it looking wonderful on the DofC who is much taller.
