Previous thread

And I shouldn't have to say this anymore but will do so for any newbies - let's keep our critiquing to the clothes and not the women wearing them.

Lukewarm on Letizia's white dress. It looks very 1996.

Is it not a nod to Moroccan style?

I'm keeping my own counsel on the Gucci Hmm

UrsulaPandress · 14/02/2019 08:26

I can't understand why anyone would prefer skirts/dresses to trousers. Kate would look great in a trouser suit.

BigGreenOlives · 14/02/2019 08:26

I think that she won’t wear a snappy suit like that precisely because she’d appear on front pages all over the world. At the moment she is appropriately dressed and not pushing any boundaries. As soon as she gets edgy she’s taking attention from her role.

QueenOfTheAndals · 14/02/2019 08:34

Just read an article on Lalla Salma's alleged divorce and it sounds very sad. She could even lose custody of her two children.

OP posts:
UrsulaPandress · 14/02/2019 08:59

It's a sad day when a trouser suit on a woman is seen as pushing boundaries but I agree it would be headline news.

QueenOfTheAndals · 14/02/2019 09:12

I agree edgier wouldn't be appropriate for events like conferences or charity visits but for something like a film premiere or trip to the theatre why not!

You should all follow Diet Prada! They’re on Instagram and they track plagiarism in the fashion industry and other problems.

To a pp, D&G was boycotted recently as they released a video ad as part of them making a move into China. The ad didn’t go down well - some considered it racist/ a bit cheap and disrespectful for that market. The company issued an apology... meanwhile D&G themselves (or just D?) went off on a rant online about people being too sensitive.. and then started writing very racist things! He would not then back down (and continued to say racist things, and threatened critics), and the big China show was pulled. (In the past D&G got into trouble for saying IVF babies are not real humans Hmm but that’s another story)

Gucci funnily enough were in trouble for releasing blackface accessories. However they have since apologised and just created a diversity panel for the company, and scholarships to encourage diversity.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 14/02/2019 09:37

Queen

That is all very sad for Princess Lalla Salma. Assuming it's true, I wonder why they're divorcing.

Anyway, from the same article, this is a cracking name for a royal historian Marlene "Koenig"!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 14/02/2019 09:39

Diana had a few goes at Le Smoking. I think it caused quite a stir at the time....

Notmyrealname855 · 14/02/2019 09:42

Wow Diana was leggy! But not her best look, it’s quite cool she looks quite nonchalant though!

That’s so sad about Princess Lalla Salma. Remember reading about her years ago but not many appearances, I hope she’s ok - sounds awful to lose custody, surely they wouldn’t impose this if only for international outcry?

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 14/02/2019 09:42

Interesting and sad artivcle5about Lalla Salma. I suspect she will.play ball and keep le profile shows she gets access to her children ; however much that may be...

AFifthOfKoolAid · 14/02/2019 09:42

Let's not forget D&Gs side dish for the IVF controversy, saying they were against gay families.

Also Hmm at Gucci in big, big 2019 realising they should be thinking about diversity.

Notmyrealname855 · 14/02/2019 09:43

Ps happy valentines everyone! Queen do you have any ideas for a romance theme for today? I love everyone’s royal trivia!

Notmyrealname855 · 14/02/2019 09:46

AFifth totally true, I truly couldn’t believe they’d released products like that that must have gone past so many committees and designers etc - not sure what it says about the diversity (or lack thereof) in their own business. Baffling.

Worse was they released the most beautiful video advert around the same day. A real classic take on old movies, hundreds of extras... and a few seconds in I thought it was a bit white looking. Not one PoC in that whole advert. Embarrassed for them, absolute idiots.

ElspethFlashman · 14/02/2019 09:51

@eholmes has some thoughts about the outfits (yes the writing is v small, you'll have to zoom in to read) which basically is astonished she has chosen two problematic designers in one day.

She is a journalist and a massive fan and tries to be very objective so her thoughts are always interesting.

Yes Elspeth!!! Annoyingly I liked these looks and then went ConfusedHmmShockEnvy at these labels! Even if she has them in her wardrobe, couldn’t she leave them til a time when those labels have proven themselves?

Also - to add to a list of ten thousand demands on the duchesses - wouldn’t it be cool to see more new designers? Evening gowns would be easy for this, instead of relying on Gucci, go for an up and coming who needs publicity, there must be loads and sure someone at Vogue could help! The two Duchesses could wear a dress from each of the main design colleges (St Martins etc). And it would be nice to put these big labels in their place, shape up or ship out!

LuciaSpain · 14/02/2019 10:04

I think Kate is going for the princessy look and embracing her being royal. Kate isn't a business woman,, I think she'd would get a lot of negativity with trying to dress like one. I do think she looks well in trousers though, ditch those frilly skirts, they look immature.

I didn't like her BAFTA dress, too bridey. Last night's dress was lovely but a block colour on top would have been lovely and less boob restraint!! Loved the swish.

Didn't like Meghan's look the other night at all.

A rare fail for Leti, too white I think.

I feel mean but this is light hearted, I wish I had more style myself! :)

ElspethFlashman · 14/02/2019 10:10

One thing I will say about Beatrice and Eugenie - they make a big point about supporting designers we've never heard of. At least one item in their outfit will be by ".... Who???!..." which I think is admirable and doesn't get enough attention.

QueenOfTheAndals · 14/02/2019 10:19

I'm surprised Kate isn't getting more flack for choosing those designers. if it had been Meghan it would've been all over the tabloids!

It would be great to support an upcoming student line from one of the fashion colleges - I think Sophie is patron of one of them?

OP posts:
LuciaSpain · 14/02/2019 10:25

Kate is beyond reproach at the moment in the media, the English Rose v Meghan. The turnaround is laughable.

QueenOfTheAndals · 14/02/2019 10:26

@Notmyrealname855 good idea re a Valentine's theme! One of my favourite royal love stories is King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway. They dated in secret for years as she was a commoner but then Harald told his father that if he wasn't allowed to marry her then he wouldn't marry at all.

There were no other heirs to the Norwegian throne at the time, which meant it would have to go to a Danish or German (though really they were all German by blood!) relative. His father relented and they've now been married over 50 years with no whiff of scandal as far as I know.

The tuxedo trouser suit on Diana doesn't look edgy for some reason.

QueenOfTheAndals · 14/02/2019 10:39

I guess it was the 80s! The green waistcoat lets it down a bit. There's one B&W photo of her wearing it and it looks a lot sharper there.

OP posts:
IdaBWells · 14/02/2019 10:58

Diana's suits would've looked a lot better with a feminine top under the jacket rather than the shirt and bowtie. She needs some skin showing, not necessarily cleavage but covered up to the high neck with a bow tie is quite naff unfortunately.

user1457017537 · 14/02/2019 11:47

I do agree with @e.holmes re a tweed suit, go Chanel or go home!
