Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Ok so apparently lrp toleriane ultra has been reformulated! Not sure if it's also the overnight one or just the original. I'm getting sick of companies changing formulas! It's not long now until my wedding so I need to have the best skin possible but I fear the changes will not be good like so many 'new improved' bollocks! Angry

SallieSallow · 14/02/2019 21:23

That’s good to hear Bo as my face looks terribly lopsided in the selfies I took pre-nuface Sad so if it helps with that I’ll be delighted.

Mint I think there was quite a big discussion on LRP changing formulas on the last thread, I’ve never used their moisturisers so didn’t pay much attention, not sure if it was the ultra one or not.

I used my timeless Vit c serum this morning, love the texture (very thin and watery) no irritation or itching but it’s early days for that yet.

EnidButton · 14/02/2019 23:17

Can I whine about my period please.
It spotted its way in, arrived late, flooded for a day and has now stopped again but I still have cramps, The Rage and feel like a huge whale with enormous thighs. If whales had thighs. The fucker will probably be back again tomorrow. Usually regular as clockwork. Plus it being late means next month it starts smack bang on the day I've somewhere important to be. Or that'll be late too so I'll have raging pmt and a cfs flare instead.

Yay womanhood. 🙃

EnidButton · 14/02/2019 23:19

The Elemis oil/cream does cause some blockages as expected because of the coconut oil but nothing major and my skin has really smooothed out in places where it's been bumpy for months.

So there is something in there that my skin loves. I'll try to work out which ingredient it is. I don't think I can use this product long term because of the coconut.

mintmagnummm · 15/02/2019 05:51

Sallie it was the original fluid they changed before that was discussed on last thread. Now they have changed the ultra (as of jan 19) the shops still seem to have the old version at mo. They have also changed their toleriane riche. The ultra fluid no longer contains Shea butter but as I said they don't seem to be in shops yet.

mintmagnummm · 15/02/2019 05:53

Enid I hear ya! My periods are like that every month, I never know where I stand! I range from 28-40 odd days but the symptoms ALWAYS start from around day 15!

DameCelia · 15/02/2019 08:46

Hello all, namechanging previous poster (but haven't posted for quite a while) checking in.
I'm the regular NuFace user who uses it at home to top up CACI treatments in salon, so happy to answer questions.
I actually haven't had CACI or used NuFace for 4 weeks now, I've had surgery to rebuild a bit of my spine with plastic and metal, access was through my throat.
As a result I have 4 inch scar across the front/side of my neck, which I'm not bothered about, and a strange rectangular bruise where the dressing was.
The surgeon said I could put 'girly cream' 🙄 on it but all I'm using at the moment is a dab of LRP Cicabalm.
Just wondering whether anyone can suggest anything gentle for the bruise?

Elllllle · 15/02/2019 09:04

For the scar, a steroid injection or steroid tape DameCelia.

damedoom was definitely a legit poster (and has been around a long time like me, in various forms).

I'm gutted because I've discovered that my HG suncreen LRP melt in cream 50+ has been the cause of my chronic eye irritation (have actually been on antibiotics and all sorts for the last 8 months ... the gp said ... maybe stop all of your face treatments ... anyway after some experimentation turns out it's the fucking sunscreen).

I might have to go back to mineral s/s. Does anyone have any recs?

botemp · 15/02/2019 09:07

FlowersBrewChocolate for the recovery Celia. Hope you're faring well.

I think for bruising in the immediate aftermath Arnica gel is usually helpful.

OP posts:
botemp · 15/02/2019 09:12

Elllllle, Skinceuticals has a special mineral one for the eyes, never used it but it could mean you can continue using what you enjoy elsewhere and just do mineral around the eye. Though I suspect, technically, you can do that with any mineral one. Otherwise, the tinted ones come out best, Skinceuticals sheer mineral defence, Exuviance or Neostrata (they're the same formulation and company but come in at different prices now and then), if you're on the oilier side and can make their colours work (so not fair or pale-ish) the Bioderma nude touch is really nice.

OP posts:
botemp · 15/02/2019 09:19

For untinted, prepare for sticker shock, the mineral sunscreen from Murad is meant to be excellent.

Think Avene also has a decent one these days, the large spray mineral one from Bioderma is very economical and not horrible to use.

Kiehl's and Clinique both do quite a nice mineral one, easy to get hold of samples but I believe they come with a bit of a white cast if you're not on the paler end of the spectrum.

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 15/02/2019 09:50

Ellllle I like the bioderma tinted mentioned by Bo but I am on the oilier side (especially in summer) and not pale. I abandoned it last summer as actually prefer the Frezyderm tinted and non-tinted but I would not suggest them if you are prone to eye irritations as it seems to be a common side effect though I've been fine with it.

DameCelia how old are you if you don't mind me asking? just a general idea is fine as we were talking upthread about whether it will still work post menopause. What results have you noticed and when did you start to see a difference? I know the CACI might skew your results a bit though. Do you think CACI works? I'm a bit reluctant to try it as not sure what products they use with it in salons.

JDSTER · 15/02/2019 09:56

Dame I was also going to suggest arnica gel as a gentle option. I’ve just purchased the NuFace and used a couple of times. I’m heading off on holiday so waiting until I’m back to get into a routine to use it. Do you have any particular tips? How long did it take for you to notice effects and what was it you noticed? I’ve had Caci and similar type facials and they do leave me with a subtle lift. I’m early 40s and skin tone pretty good. I’m hoping if I start now I can possibly prevent some of the inevitable ‘droop’ of ageing.

Elllllle · 15/02/2019 11:24

I'm not UK based and the laws where I live are quite strict when it comes to sunscreen. I can't easily get the Kiehls, skinceuticals or Neostrata - I love neost generally so partictaularly pissed off about this. I can get the bioderma however, so might and try. I think from memory dermlogica also do one. I have medium to light toned ski, combo (proned to acne, sensitivity and also shiny forehead/nose/chin)

Elllllle · 15/02/2019 11:25

Meant to add thank you Bo and Sallie

SallieSallow · 15/02/2019 13:34

Damecelia also recommending arnica for the bruise as I think cicaplast is more for scars. Wishing you speedy healing Flowers

Elllllle I think the tinted bioderma might be fine for you then, I used the medium shade but there is a light which I think would be more of a light/medium.

princessTiasmum · 15/02/2019 16:42

I purchased a nu face trinity, full size one, but previously had mini, and to be honest the mini seemed to make a difference, cant see any difference with this one, maybe something to do with the contacts being smaller on the mini
Just had cheek fillers and can see a huge difference in my face overall, and seems to have lifted it slightly

EnidButton · 15/02/2019 17:57

Flowers wishing you a speedy recovery Dame. Take it easy. Arnica cream is actually pretty good. I bruise very easily and have used it with some success. Part of it though might be the massaging action but not sure you should put any extra pressure on the area so maybe try to wait it out.

Mint that sounds like a pain in the bum (literally!) Sad

DameCelia · 15/02/2019 21:18

Thank you for all the good wishes, the surgery was pretty grim and the recovery is slow and painful, but it will hopefully prevent further spinal cord damage so I'm pleased it was done.
Excellent suggestion of Arnica, I have some and have started applying it. The various mentions of sunscreen have reminded me that I need to get sunscreen over the scar as well! I have quite a lot of keloid scarring going on which I am not too bothered about but I know that can discolour if I don't keep the sun away from it.
I've used a full sized NuFace at home for about two years now, and I've been having CACI for three years.
I'm 52 Sallie and definitely seeing the effects of menopause, I've been in peri for at least seven years and am currently three months from my last period but who knows what that means. The CACI and the NuFace have both definitely delayed sagging and retained some plumpness in my face.
My feeling about CACI is that it depends entirely on the person doing it, the woman I see is a genius and she virtually sculpts my face into shape. The downside is going regularly, every three weeks for me and I really notice it if I don't. The immediate effect is a real glow to the skin and very plumped up skin, the longer term effect is very toned facial and neck muscles so plump cheeks and a sharp jawline. I noticed the effects immediately.
In terms of products used the CACI wands come with serum soaked tips which should be new for each client, these provide the 'slip' fo the massage and conductivity for the electrical current. The therapist I see usually applies a layer of Clarins Essence before starting but that's only because it is a Clarins salon.
With the NuFace I regard it as a sort of maintenance in between CACI treatments, I'd like to say I use it every day but I am a bit hit and miss. I follow the basic routine from their website, I don't bother with their serum which is stupidly expensive and a bit crap. I use Korean Hyaluronic acid lotion, or Clarins Essence which came in a gift bag, sometimes an aloe gel from Amazon and a couple of times the juice from a leaf of my aloe vera plant!
I'm not sure I would expect to see dramatic differences just using the NuFace without the CACI and I'm not sure the effect of the CACI would last so well without the NuFace, for me they sort of complement each other.
I know what you mean about the inevitable droop of ageing JDSTER, there is no denying that getting older means less fat (in the face), less muscle tone and less bone density. I think of the CACI and NuFace as helping from the outside but accept that the price of being alive is getting older. In terms of tips the only one I have is to build it into your regular routine, so maybe in the evening do it between cleansing your face and brushing your teeth, rather than it being an 'extra' task iyswim.
I'm interested in what you say about the mini NuFace PrincessTiasMum, I sometimes wish I'd gone for the smaller one as the full size can feel a bit too big, particularly on my forehead.
Apologies for the long post!

DameCelia · 15/02/2019 21:23

I've just realised that my comment about 'the price of being alive is getting older' sounds really snippy, apologies, it wasn't meant that way Blush Being told my spinal cord is damaged at the beginning of December and finding myself having surgery in the middle of January sort of focused my mind on just how fragile life and health are.

SallieSallow · 15/02/2019 22:22

Thank you for that info Damecelia and you didn’t sound snippy at all, you’ve really been through the mill Sad and I hope the pain eases soon Flowers

I’m glad I got the nuface mini now especially as I have a small forehead, not sure I’d fit the big one on there Grin I’ll have a look into Caci, the salon near me that offers it is a decleor one which put me off as I don’t get on with their products. I might ask if they can just do the Caci with the tips and no other treatments, not sure if I could stretch to every 3 weeks though as it’s pricey in that salon.

SallieSallow · 15/02/2019 22:25

I’m definitely going to look into fillers as well - thanks for the update Princesstia

princessTiasmum · 15/02/2019 22:31

DameCelia yes that is what i meant about the larger Nuface,i too have only a small face and the mini was easier to manoeuvre

TantricTwist · 16/02/2019 01:27

Interesting re CACI and nuface Dame and the cheek lifts and mini nuface Princess.

I know my jowels are about to drop imminently so all this info is great.

RuggyPeg · 17/02/2019 07:55

I'm getting really bored of using my nuface and have dropped out of the routine already. It's such a pain in the arse slathering myself in cold gel every night! I can feel a return coming on.......
