Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Hi, I'm a complete newcomer to skin care and was pointed in this direction by another thread.
I'd like to thank you all for the fountain of knowledge I've spent days reading the old threads 🙈
I've started with face wash, moisturizer and suncream. I've gone for la Roche posay as I'm not in Europe and it's a brand I can get easily here in the fancy chemists. So far I seem to be getting along with them all and its helped clear up spots from using regular suncream on my face.
I'd next like to tackle black heads across my nose and cheek area. Any suggestions? I'm cautious of acids as I live in a very hot country and have relatively fair skin.

banivani · 19/05/2019 09:35

I haven’t kept up but wanted to get back to P50. Grin since posting last I’ve used it pretty much every evening and have very smooth skin. It does clear little bumps/whiteheads/milia. I checked which variations I have since I bought three different ones in the skincity sale - am currently using P50w, and also have the original and the 400 for pigmentation (but they’re all travel sizes). Not sure which one to open next. I do really like it and am already thinking about how to get hold of it when I run out. I have to keep an eye out so I don’t over exfoliate though.

Don’t know if I’ve complained about my rash here but I’m covered in a weird psoriasis like rash that will not go away. Sad today I’m ordering a massive jar of Sudocrem from Ireland.

SallieSallow · 19/05/2019 10:06

banivani embassy of beauty sell all the P50 stuff, no travel sizes though which is why I got in a huff and haven’t bought from them Grin you did say about your rash - think you’d just got a prescription from the doctor last time so presume that hasn’t worked Sad hope the sudocreme helps, but do a patch test if you haven’t used it before, I tried it on spots years ago and felt like my face was on fire.

Hope your poor DH is healing Enid and sounds like a very rare reaction so definitely not something you could have foreseen especially with a range that’s aimed at sensitive skin/rosacea. It’s not like you were bathing him in P50 or anything Grin

Outtheforest I use a BHA for blackheads/blocked pores, I can understand being wary if you live in a hot country but if you use it once or twice a week and have a good spf50 in place that you’re re-applying regularly then I think you’d be fine. If you’d prefer to avoid though clay masks can help, Vichy do one that’s quite good if that brand is easy for you to get hold of.

banivani · 19/05/2019 10:12

I’m in Sweden Sallie so they won’t deliver to me I’m afraid... no prescriptions yet from the docs either but sure they don’t know what it is so can’t prescribe I suppose.

JDSTER · 19/05/2019 10:23

I must remember it’s Embassy of Beauty I can buy P50 from. I’ll go for the ‘full strength’ P50 when I’m finished with the W version.

outtheforrst as Sallie recommended, a BHA is your best bet for blocked pores/blackheads (most likely sebaceous filaments). There’s no reason to avoid them because of living in a hot country, it’s really ensuring you’ve got a good SPF in place (which you have with LRP) and avoid direct sun/keep in shade where you can, wear a hat and sunglasses. This is general advice anyway if you want to avoid the ageing effects of the sun on your face and I think you become more vigilant generally if you’re using an active ingredient.

botemp · 19/05/2019 10:29

Been struggling to get on MN these past few days (technical issues, I don't seem to be alone) so am attempting to catch up, apologies if I miss someone/something.

FlowersCake congrats on the Baloonbaby!

Connie, on regular facials, it highly depends on the type of facials and how well educated the staff are. Some massage techniques will make you age faster where others can help maintain a certain firmness. Pampering spa style facials are likely to be full of common irritants and continued inflammation, again, can be responsible for premature ageing. So it's pretty much like skincare, if you know what you're doing rather than solely relying on the facialist they can be beneficial but as a rule the majority is a waste of money and time.

Sallie I'm using the Tripollar, but it's the one for the body which works very differently than their face ones.

Peach, the only product that I think could potentially work and is safe to use on eyelids is the Dr Dennis Gross Retinol eye product. Of little use when you're TTC but everything else is just going to be temporary.

Forest, I understand the hesitance with acids and sun exposure but as much as I hammer on about using SPF when on actives, acids only really require a very minor SPF coverage to compensate, so as long as you're using a good amount and top up it's not such an issue. Saying all that, BHA would be your acid for choice for blackheads and that's the least sun sensitising. Paula's Choice remains the unbeaten champion if you can get that where you are otherwise there are a couple of online shops that deliver globally. Think lookfantastic carry it.

The site has been temperamental for me too Bo I can usually get on & read ok but can’t always post. Very annoying when I’ve typed a long reply up & it won’t go through Angry

Thanks for reminding me it was tripollar, the reviews for the face one sound promising but then again so do nuface and I really need to give that a fighting chance before looking into anything else.

AwdBovril · 19/05/2019 12:58

banivani I'm trying to remember which site I got my first bottle of P50 from - it was a European site, possibly Swedish. They won't deliver to the UK any more though. They do sell smaller size bottles though.

YesQueen · 19/05/2019 13:04

I got the Murad AHA/BHA cleanser (full size!) in my goody bag. Tried it last night and my skin felt really nice after. Got the recovery serum which was ££ but I want to use up some of my others first

AwdBovril · 19/05/2019 13:04

Oh - I found it but for some reason they don't sell the P50 any more. Weird. It's Skincity.se if you wanted to have a look - they do carry other products in the BR line but no P50, oddly.

Connie5858 · 19/05/2019 13:07

Botemp
Thanks so much for your advice
Once again my skin is looking good from the advice. I just wondered if the facial would help . Thank you

Outtheforest · 19/05/2019 13:45

Thanks all, I'll try and get my hands on some BHA. Hoping the fancy chemist has some as delivery is difficult (not actually any sort of postal system here) if not I'll send some to my friend who's visiting in a few weeks.

TantricTwist · 19/05/2019 17:25

Yesqueen I love my Murad face wash so may well try their BHA/AHA cleanser at some point then as salycilic acid works so well for my skin as does a good scrub with a flannel.

banivani · 19/05/2019 20:19

bovril I know, skincity is where I got mine and can’t any more.

EnidButton · 19/05/2019 23:06

Much better today thanks Sallie

Bani Would a dermatologist be able to help better the the doctors you saw? Creams aimed at eczema often cover other skin conditions that cause itching and irritations. Hopefully the cream you've bought will help a bit. Flowers

banivani · 20/05/2019 08:20

I’m supposed to be getting a referral so just have to wait I suppose. In the meantime - Sudocrem!

SallieSallow · 20/05/2019 18:20

Glad he’s on the mend Enid

hope the sudocreme helps bani or at least provides some relief until you can see the derm.

mintmagnummm · 20/05/2019 18:52

My other half needs a new face wash (just finished cerave) used cetaphil before that and 2 Vichy ones before that but has not been impressed with any of them. Heard a few people on here mention murad, there's a clarifying face wash I was looking at, is it any good? He doesn't use spf though and won't (unless on holiday) will this be a problem? He has oily/combination skin prone to breakouts and blackheads. Any ideas ladies? (Think he used lrp effaclar wash before and didn't like)

JDSTER · 20/05/2019 19:02

I haven’t tried Murad mint but I know Tant likes it. I use this Cosrx cleanser. It’s good for oily spot prone skin and lady’s forever. It does have tea tree in it, in case that’s a problem for him.

JDSTER · 20/05/2019 19:02

lasts forever

SallieSallow · 20/05/2019 19:40

I was just going to ask lady’s forever what....Grin GrinGrin

Mint what cerave did your DP use? They do a foaming one for oily skin but it’s not super foamy and is still quite mild and gentle, I use it in the morning during summer.

I was going to suggest getting him to use a BHA toner like Paula’s choice for his breakouts and blackheads but not a good idea if he won’t use spf.

JDSTER · 20/05/2019 19:43
Grin
TantricTwist · 20/05/2019 20:02

Mint I really like Murad's clarifying face wash and it lasts forever. It does say that the Salicylic acid in it keeps working on your skin after use Confused so this may mean it's no good if he doesnt like SPF.

I'm just about to run out of mine and have decided to then finish off our Neutrogena visibly clear face wash that my DS keeps forgetting to use as he uses my Murad instead Hmm. I've used it a few times and it seems fine.

mintmagnummm · 20/05/2019 20:16

Hmmm 🤔 not sure what to do. Thank you ladies I appreciate your input. Sallie he was using the hydrating one from cerave as heard some negative reviews for the oily formula. I'm lucky to have got him using a moisturiser and even then he only uses a tiny bit!

mintmagnummm · 20/05/2019 20:17

Oh meant to add he wouldn't use a toner etc either he is extremely minimalistic and will literally only use a wash and a moisturiser 🙄
