Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Aww congratulations Baloon and welcome to Baloonbaby Flowers not good about the epidural though Shock but hope the blotchiness goes down soon.

Ts don't think I'll be bothering with P50, it doesn't sound like it's worth the price to me. I'll either repurchase PC BHA or might try the Cosrx one.

Fab haul YesQueen and I was wondering how CH knew you by your top too!

Mumno not sure re SPF as I am one of the few people ok with frezyderm! Biore is often recommended here but would probably be too drying for you. Bioderma Cicabio SPF50 is my winter SPF so might be worth looking at that, LRP do a whole host of them too, think a couple of them are recommended on here but can't remember which!

Serum - you could add a Vit C in the morning (after cleanse and before moisturiser) or a hyaluronic acid serum either night or morning again after cleansing but before moisturiser. I would go for one or the other initially though not add both at the same time.

Exfoliant - do you mean an AHA/BHA toner? I've been using Paula's choice BHA which is ok but not amazing and aimed more at oily skin with blocked pores so probably not right for you. The P50 we are all chatting about is an exfoliating toner but it's very expensive and I wouldn't recommend going straight for it if you haven't used anything similar before. Alpha H liquid gold is an AHA exfoliant, never did much for me but your mileage might vary, available on QVC so can be sent back under their 30 day MBG if not suitable/no good.

Hi all
Just wanted to know what you think of facials.
I saw a lady walking her dog who works in a high end spa (not self employed or does outside work)
And she said as people age she can tell if they have regular facials.
What does everyone think. And if so how often.
I am 48.

AwdBovril · 16/05/2019 18:45

Congratulations on the arrival of Baloonbaby!

I've been a devotee of P50 for a year or more now, it definitely makes a difference to my skin. Less blemishes, generally clearer, brighter & smoother. Any post-blemish marks seem to fade more quickly. TBH I don't use it as directed - I put a few drops directly onto my hand, & gently pat & smooth it onto my face & neck while it's still damp from using toner (plain rose water - if it's completely evaporated I spray some thermal water as well.). I don't like using cotton wool unnecessarily, & found that this works ok for me. I do use it most nights, probably only 4-5 drops but there's negligible waste as I'm not chucking any away on a cotton pad.

I like the Cosrx BHA. Do people still do the BHA, clay mask, oil cleanser thing to remove blackheads? Or is that now frowned upon? I seem to remember there being some discussion about it some considerable while ago, but I lost track of the thread.

mumno11 · 16/05/2019 18:52

Thanks Salliesallow. I was fine with the first frezyderm and then my mum pinched it. The second one I ordered made my eyes sore. At first I thought it was pollen allergy!

I have ordered the timeless vit c which recommended a lot here.
Is it ok to use vit c in the morning and Hyaluronic acid in the evening post cleansing or just vit c for the time being for am and pm routine?

SallieSallow · 16/05/2019 19:39

I’ve not done that for ages Awd (what was your old user name, sorry if you’ve said and I missed it) and recently chucked my clay masks out as they looked like they’d gone off/dried up.

Mumno I use and like Timeless Vit c, if I were you I’d just use it in the morning for a few weeks, if no irritation or reaction then introduce hyaluronic acid at night. I wouldn’t start using two new products at the same time as if you had a reaction you wouldn’t know which one caused it, or conversely if you saw a massive improvement you wouldn’t know which one was doing the hard work. You can use hyaluronic acid in the morning too (after Vit c before moisturiser), I sometimes do in the winter when my skin is drier but don’t need it on a daily basis & try to keep the morning routine fairly simple.

JDSTER · 16/05/2019 19:53

TS I can’t vouch for P50 PIGM (did you see Sunday Times article I added on Sunday?) but yes P50W stings every time, even after a year. I use normal night time moisturiser afterwards.

Congratulations baloon Smile

Awd yes I still occasionally do ‘50 shades of 🐌 routine’ with BHA and mask etc.

mumno as Salli suggests, start with Vit C then add HA so you’re sure your skin is happy with first introduction. Vit C has antioxidant effect so is ideal for a.m in addition to your SPF. HA at night for hydration (although can be used in a.m after Vit C if desired)

mumno11 · 16/05/2019 20:04

Thanks sallie and JDSTER. It makes sense to use one product at a time now.

What's P50?

Anyone with spf recommendations for dry skin?

JDSTER · 16/05/2019 20:18

P50 a liquid exfoliant. Flick back to Sunday- I posted an article from India Knight in Sunday Times and conversation continued this week. A few of us use it.

JDSTER · 16/05/2019 20:20

sallie just mentioned Bioderma one mumno meant to be good for dry skin. I’m oily so can’t help.

mumno11 · 16/05/2019 21:22

👍 JDSTER. Will give Bioderma a go.

SallieSallow · 16/05/2019 21:53

Mumno it’s Bioderma Cicabio spf 50. Biorderma do lots of SPFs some of which also might be good but this is the only one I’ve tried. I have oily/combo skin but get dry/flakey patches in cold weather and find it helps, it’s not super greasy either and has some healing/anti-irritation ingredients too.

This is it

mumno11 · 16/05/2019 22:17

Thanks sallie. Do you think it's a good idea to use vit c in am and pm routine or should I just stick to am?

SallieSallow · 16/05/2019 23:12

I’d just stick to am Mumno as think 2 x a day might be a bit much with Vit c, it has the potential to be irritating if you overdo it. AM is best as it boosts your SPF.

princessTiasmum · 17/05/2019 10:35

Anyone still using the nu face? and what do you think about it, did it make a difference
I got rid of mine as i didn;t think it was helping, but the one i got said refreshed in the current body site,so maybe reconditioned
I had one previously that i felt i could see a difference with, but it did stop working eventually
Really considering getting another or something similiar,as my jowls seem to have got worse recently,

JDSTER · 17/05/2019 13:20

Yep, still using NuFace but probably not as frequently as I should. I don’t know if it’s making a difference (I say that about everything mind you) but perhaps it’s a good preventative measure.

SallieSallow · 17/05/2019 16:15

I found mine but haven't started using it again, not sure why as it really did only take about 5 mins but I seem to have a mental block about it Confused

I think it was Bo mentioned another gizmo that sounded intriguing but can't remember what it was now, and I really should give the nuface a proper chance before moving on to anything else.

mintmagnummm · 17/05/2019 17:25

Not happy with my skin! That's all I have to say 🙄

PositivelyPeach · 17/05/2019 21:43

Hello all, can I ask about eye creams?

As I'm getting older I'm starting to notice the skin on my eyelids is a lot looser - I look very tired without make up. I don't have particularly bad dark circles, and my crows feet are minimal - it's just my droopy eyelids.

Are there any creams out there that can help to tighten the skin up a bit? I've never actually bought an eye cream Shock I've tried lots of samples, but never ever seen a benefit - possibly I haven't used a product long enough for it to take effect?

Looking to avoid retinol for now, TTC so don't want to start a product and then have to stop.

My skin is not at all sensitive, and I only ever experience mild eye irritation from heavily perfumed products.

TantricTwist · 17/05/2019 23:30

Hi PositivelyPeach Body shops elderflower eye gel definitely tightens up around your eyes with noticable effect.

EnidButton · 18/05/2019 00:10

DH's face is now blotchy af and peeling everywhere. He's got dry rough crusty bits under his eyes and on cheekbones. Eyes still swollen. It's really bad. No idea what he can use to help the dry itchy skin. It's a bit like bad sunburn.

AwdBovril · 18/05/2019 00:32

I was a rather undignified noise. Grin

I definitely wouldn't give up my P50. Would have to be rather struggling financially. It's made a huge difference to my skin, both in appearance and comfort. And I only buy it once (or less) per year, so it's not actually an enormous expense when I work out the monthly cost.

SallieSallow · 18/05/2019 09:45

PositivelyPeach I use alpha h eye gel, it’s good for an instant/noticeable effect (tightening and brightening) but I don’t find it has any long term results. I’m yet to find anything that does though unfortunately Sad

I’ve ordered some CosRX BHA will see how I get on with that and may try the P50 next time. If they sold a sample/travel size for around £20-30 I’d definitely try it but £60 seems a lot for an ‘unknown’ that may not do much for me.

TantricTwist · 18/05/2019 18:14

Enid antihistamine to stop the itching different ones have different working ingredients the one beginning with C works best I find.
When my DS had a reaction to a very strong Nivea suncream on holiday with eczema type reaction which just wouldnt budge I applied Vaseline on it as soon as we got home and it dissapeared really quickly, so give that a try.

EnidButton · 18/05/2019 21:07

Thanks Tant, he's been taking antihistamines and I put some lanolin on the bad bits around his eyes, so a bit like Vaseline. It's a bit better today. He's bought some oilatum moisturiser which is for dermatitis and eczema etc. Hopefully it'll all heal up quickly. Think it was caused by an allergic reaction to the spf in the LRP rosealiac cream when he went out in the sun. Feel bad for recommending it to him but apparently it's quite a rare reaction so I wasn't to know. Poor DH.
