Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Just seen the price Shock I knew it was expensive but thought there might be a travel/sample size. The website did make me fill in an on-line questionnaire but was fairly quick and you can over-ride the 'prescription' if gives you.

Bluebell9 · 13/05/2019 12:42

Hello All,
I popped up on these threads ages ago and you helped me get a routine that has been great.

I'm 16 weeks pregnant and now the sickness/tiredness seems to be settling down, I'm back looking after my skin properly. Luckily pregnancy agrees with my skin, so despite me neglecting it for months, my skin is looking nice.

I've switched to Neostrata SPF which seems to work well and leaves a really nice finish.
My melasma is back and seems to be spreading. I've been using Azeliac acid from GOW but I might see if the doctor will give me a prescription for the higher strength one.

I know I need to avoid retinols but is there anything else I should be giving a miss?

My normal routine is
AM
Superdrug Simply Pure Hydrating Serum Day
Cerave facial moisturiser
Neostrata SPF

PM
Clarins Pure melt Cleansing gel
GOW Azeliac Acid
GOW Niacinamide
Superdrug Simply Pure Hydrating Serum- night
Cerave facial moisturiser

P50V is the 'mature' skin one, Sallie, P50 without any letters is the original full strength one, P50W is the starter strength. The travel size is 50ml and I usually pay around €25 for it, do they only sell 150ml and up?

Hi again, bluebell, yes retinoids are completely off the table. There's a few other ingredients where there isn't really a consensus on, mainly, BHA and chemical UV filters. You're using neither so that should be fine, WRT melasma probably best to avoid glycolic acid and investing in a good wide brimmed UV hat. I know it seems very extra but it is summer soon enough and a hat on top of mineral SPF really is the way to go to manage it somewhat.

SallieSallow · 13/05/2019 14:50

Thanks Bo yes I was fairly sure I'd seen a travel size discussed on here but don't see it on that website. I'll have a look properly when I'm home though as it seems to be blocked in work so was just on my phone.

Congratulations Bluebell I am not knowledgeable at all about what can or can't be used during pregnancy but may be worth having a chat with your GP about prescription azelaic. And getting the hat too - I'm not a hat wearer so didn't pay much attention but there was a particular UV one discussed quite a lot here last summer, hopefully someone else will remember.

YesQueen · 13/05/2019 15:12

I'm at selfridges on Wednesday so if anyone wants pictures or swatches of anything then let me know. They have CT, pat mcgrath, hourglass etc

SallieSallow · 13/05/2019 16:31

YesQueen I'd be interested to see swatches of any new Hourglass palettes especially the ones with Ambient light powders, bronzers and blushers. And if there are any sightings of a pressed version of their Veil powder, I love it but it's very messy!

YesQueen · 13/05/2019 16:54

I will have a nosy! My lovely boss is letting me finish work early so I can have longer there

SallieSallow · 13/05/2019 18:49

That’s good of your boss YesQueen more time for spending money too Grin

I emailed embassy of beauty to ask them about travel/sample sizes, no dice as they just replied saying 150ml is the smallest they do. Not sure whether to risk it or just repurchase PC SA. Does anyone here think it’s worth £60? And any idea on shelf life once opened?

JDSTER · 13/05/2019 20:48

sallie Liberty, where I bought P50W (starter strength) did not have travel sizes on sale so I had to buy full size. I’ve had mine open for a year I think. It smells exactly the same (like vinegar) so I presume it’s fine. I’m not sure if it is worth it but I’d like to try full strength version to see what it’s like. To be honest I’m never particularly wowed by any skincare as I’ve got older (I remember using a weleda rose moisturiser that used to leave my skin ‘glowing’ the morning after using it but I was probably early 30s then).

SallieSallow · 13/05/2019 21:42

Thanks JDSTER I’d expect to have mine for at least a year too if I’m only using it once or twice a week. Still not sure if it’s worth or not, I’ll sit on my hands for now and have a think.

SallieSallow · 13/05/2019 21:46

We always seem to have the same issues with products Not Doing Much, I’m quite happy with my routine and my skin is fairly settled (less oily & I rarely get spots or whiteheads anymore) but I’m yet to find anything with the ‘Wow’ factor.

JDSTER · 13/05/2019 22:16

Completely agree sallie. Happy with my good solid routine but I’d love to find a wow skincare product......

TantricTwist · 13/05/2019 23:07

YesQueen swatches of anything new like Pat McGrath would be great like her eyeshadows (palette bronze seduction) and
lipsticks ie
Lip Fetish sheer colour balm and
Lust Lip Gloss. Blitz trance, luxe trance lipsticks.
Guerlain - natural glow foundation.
Dior Capture totale foundation

Have a lovely afternoons browsing

YesQueen · 13/05/2019 23:37

The bronze seduction palette is on my dream list! I will definitely be stopping off there

TantricTwist · 13/05/2019 23:42

And all her luscious highlighters (all way too out there to actually wear I assume but gorgeous to look at nevertheless)

TantricTwist · 13/05/2019 23:43

Check out the Game of Thrones Urban decay palette if it's in stock

TantricTwist · 13/05/2019 23:45

Oh yes and see if the Viseart palettes seem worth it as well as the Natasha Denone as they are £££

mommybunny · 14/05/2019 08:36

Hi everyone!

It’s been a while since I posted here and just wanted to report back on the LRP Vit C10 so far (with thanks to Bo for her research and feedback on the ingredients!).

The serum itself is a little messy - it’s extremely viscous so sticks to the outside of the dropper, so when you replace the dropper in the bottle you invariably get some on the neck of the bottle iyswim. I don’t know if that will harden over time the way a nail polish bottle does. I do keep it in the bathroom as my kitchen is just too far away to grab it in the morning (I’m spoiled rotten as my DH brings me my coffee every morning!Blush) but it is a very cool room (like the rest of my house Angry but that’s another story). I’ve been using it with the Vichy 89 hyaluronic serum and I really do think after a couple of days it’s making a difference. I may be imagining it but I have noticed a “radiance” that wasn’t there before.

I have also noticed a couple of new zits but I’m not too worried because they’re being managed with Effaclar Duo and not lasting long at all. They’re not very angry or painful. I know “purging” is common when starting retinol but is it with other actives?

You’re dead right Bo, I’m very lacking in knowledge of actives but am enjoying figuring it out, and so far am generally pleased with the way things are going.

Will look at all the other new posts later today! Have a nice day everyone (what can I say? I’m American, wishing a nice day is in the Constitution).

EnidButton · 14/05/2019 10:13

I think the iron I was taking has caused a breakout. Sore lumps on my chin which I haven't had for a long time.

According to Dr Google, iron doesn't cause acne but there's enough anecdotal evidence for me to stop taking it for a few days and see if that helps.

EnidButton · 14/05/2019 10:14

Have a nice day too Bunny

And have a good time later Queen

EnidButton · 14/05/2019 19:35

DH has had a bad reaction to the LRP Rosaliac riche moisturiser. He looked kind of sunburnt after the first day and then this morning woke up with a puffed up face and really itchy skin. A quick google shows this has happened to others too.

Wondering which ingredient would cause an allergic reaction in someone who hasn't ever had one before. Most of the ingredients are things he would've come across in other products with no problems, except niacinamide and whatever is used to tint it slightly green.

Wish we could take back products in the uk like you can in the USA. It was £18 for a tiny tube.

EnidButton · 14/05/2019 19:45

Could be the octocrylene (which I guess is what makes it a mild spf). Think I will take it back actually.

SallieSallow · 14/05/2019 20:59

Enid you should be able to return it as your DH has had an allergic reaction, especially as it’s aimed at (guessing by the name) people with rosacea. Sounds like it is the octocrylene but could be niacinamide, think there’s someone here (maybe Mint) that reacts badly to it.

Bunny thanks for the LRP Vit c review, I’m not keen on viscous serums though, the one I use (timeless) is very thin/watery which I prefer so will probably stick with it. I’ve not found Vit c or HA give me spots but I guess they may do if your new to them & the LRP Vit c does contain salicylic acid too which can cause purging.

In other news Embassy of Beauty are spamming me with emails (but not offering any discounts!) which is making me reluctant to give them £60 plus of my money. And I need to buy some new clothes (have lost weight) but can’t find anything I like Confused

Baloonphobia · 14/05/2019 21:00

Thanks for the advice a few pages ago. I'll be looking up the moisturiser and SPF recommendations. I've been a bit distracted as I'm having a baby in the morning!

JDSTER · 14/05/2019 21:05

I’m having a baby in the morning Shock. Good luck baloon Flowers
