Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Sorry, missed your second post bani. Fingers crossed it clears up. Do you know what triggered it?

I bought eyedrops and whitening toothpaste today. Both tinted blue. Hopefully won't look like a smurf.

banivani · 11/05/2019 21:35

I’ve had a throat infection since Easter that the doctor wouldn’t see because it was normal bla bla but probably that’s the trigger. But the doctor today said that honestly we might never know. She’d never seen it’s like anyway, I love being so yoonique ... It’s like House MD - we’ll see if the cortisone clears it up basically and then problem solved (and it’s not lupus).

banivani · 11/05/2019 21:35

Oh and if we’re talking mascaras I’d love tips of smudge proof brown or brown/black ones!

TantricTwist · 12/05/2019 01:15

I used my Rimmel Magnif'eyes spice palette for the first time properly tonight as I was off out. It is so very pigmented and so very smooth and lovely to apply and blend, plus it's lasted the night.

I bought it after seeing Olli in the same colour as I always wear and I realised I needed to jazz up my usual look, so couldn't resist when I saw it for £4.99 in Tesco. So glad I did as the extra warmth makes so much difference.

Lovely selection of colours esp if you have green eyes like me.

I hope everyone's rashes clear up soon, wish I could help and advise.

Enid don't cut your disney hair Shock

TantricTwist · 12/05/2019 01:21

by that I mean Olli you always wear a gorgeous variety of eyeshadows that I realised I could too.

YesQueen · 12/05/2019 01:45

Ooh that spice palette is lovely! I'm all for experimenting - it washes off Grin often try stuff before my night time cleanse

JDSTER · 12/05/2019 14:29

Hello to mommybunny and baloonphobia. I have oily skin too @baloonphobia. In the spring/summer I don’t always use a moisturiser in the morning. After cleansing with a wash I use a Vit C serum then apply SPF. I really like Biore UV bright milk SPF 50 (amazon or eBay) Biore UV watery essence also good for oily skin but I much prefer the finish of the bright milk, which is a bit more primer like. Some people on here like Frezyderm SPF 50 velvet sunscreen. In theory I should like it - quite a primer like finish but it irritates my eyes and I don’t really like the feel of it. Dr Sam Bunting has an SPF 50 product, supposedly good for oily acne prone skin but it’s quite pricey and I’ve never tried it.
La Roche Posay do some good SPFs if you’ve got oily skin. Basically, have a read of reviews for the ones I’ve mentioned and see what you think.

In terms of moisturiser, I use a now discontinued LRP oil free moisturiser (still have a couple left) and at night a LRP toleriane moisturiser that I got from America www.laroche-posay.us/face-and-body-skin-care/face-products/face-moisturizer/toleriane-double-repair-face-moisturizer-3337875545792.html but I think a European version is available. Oil free and contains niacinamide, a good skin ingredient for me. Cerave, now available in Boots has a similar moisturiser with ceramides and niacinamide www.boots.com/cerave-facial-moisturising-lotion-52ml-10258275 says for normal to dry but fine as a night time moisturiser for oily skin. Hope that helps a bit.

India knight has reviewed P50 PIGM today

When Skincity put all their BP stuff on offer since they’re not selling it any more I bought one small bottle
of each to try (except one. started with the one for sensitive skin and I’m in danger of over exfoliating from that alone Hmm but I do see an effect. Hard to keep it up though when it’s so effective!

EnidButton · 12/05/2019 16:08

Hopefully the tablets will sort it out bani. Bit annoying they don't know what caused it but ime doctors don't like a mystery. We do need House on the case.

Skin smoother and softer than a baby possums bum today. Not complaining but wish I knew why so I could keep it like this all the time. Only thing that's different is I've started taking iron tablets.

DH has started using some lrp products. (Mild rosacea, redness on cheekbones without spots) A b5 cleanser, rosaliac riche moisturiser and I've given him a water spray to use after the cleanser even though he's dubious. Skin looks calmer already.

Hope everyone has had a nice chilled Sunday.

EnidButton · 12/05/2019 16:12

Tant Grin it needs cutting but I'm leaving it to do its thing for now. Seeing as it's decided to be nice atm.

Does India Knight love everything she reviews? Maybe it's a case of age just doesn't write about things she dislikes which is fair enough, but the constant amazing-ness of everything puts me off a bit. They can't all be brilliant. Admittedly I'm still not over the Babyliss big hair that I tracked down for weeks only to find I hated it but tbf that wasn't just IK hyping it up and might be my tricky hair.

EnidButton · 12/05/2019 16:13

it's a case of age = it's a case of she

JDSTER · 12/05/2019 16:44

I know what you mean Enid. No longer am I taken in by endorsements. I know a lot of us, myself included, use P50 products.
Maybe it is a case of age Grin

Mum2lots · 12/05/2019 17:27

Kola.

SallieSallow · 12/05/2019 19:25

I hope the tablets help banivani and hope you’re feeling better soon too Mint Flowers

I would have thought a baby possum’s bum would be a bit hairy Enid Grin but glad you’re skin is behaving well.

balloon I have oily skin too and follow a similar routine to JDSTER though I use frezyderm spf, seem to be one of the few people on here that didn’t get sore eyes from it. I found the Biore one too drying which is almost unheard of for me, it gave me flakey patches so could have been an intolerance/reaction as it has a high alcohol content, it’s cheap though so definitely worth trying. I use the cerave moisturiser linked above at night and really like it, Eucerin 5% urea facial moisturiser is a good one for me too.

EnidButton · 12/05/2019 22:20

Well I haven't used the facial razor thingy for a while Sallie

JD It does look good. Can it be bought from a store without the whole getting approval etc thing now? That's partly what out me off before.

Mint Hope you feel better soon. Brew

JDSTER · 12/05/2019 22:31

Enid I bought P50W (starter strength one) in Liberty London. I use it a couple of times a week. To be honest it’s not quite the miracle I was hoping for but who knows what my skin would be like without it. I think I would repurchase when I’m back in London, going for the original P50 this time. They do ask questions but not too onerous to be honest.

JDSTER · 12/05/2019 22:33

Meant to say hope things settle for you mint. Obviously a stressful time in the lead up to your wedding.

newmummalion · 12/05/2019 22:42

Hi! I'm new! I'm 30 years old and a mum to one 18 month old. I'm just getting back into skincare and make up after not really bothering since my DS was born!

I've bought a few of The Ordinary products which I am enjoying, and Weleda Skin food, which I love. Also liking their Almond Gentle Cleanser.

I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a decent affordable foundation (under £15 ideally) I've been considering E.L.F Flawless Finish but haven't purchased yet. I like medium coverage really, and not too matte!

Looking forward to sharing and gaining some tips! Smile

YesQueen · 12/05/2019 23:01

@newmummalion two that I really like are CYO lifeproof and the makeup revolution conceal and define

newmummalion · 13/05/2019 02:36

@YesQueen Thanks, I'll have a look at those!

mintmagnummm · 13/05/2019 07:49

Thank you Sallie Enid & JDSTER XX

banivani · 13/05/2019 09:05

Enid I was wondering if they were branching out to other ways of selling P50 when they started selling it on Skincity but clearly they decided to pull back and wanted some sort of manual control on who buys it, hence some sort of questions. Which means I'll use my three bottles and never see it again, probably.

So far I do find it clarifying and I had some closed pores that did not explode but just opened up a bit and cleared out I think. But it hasn't done masses for my skin texture I feel.

botemp · 13/05/2019 09:27

In the UK you can buy Biologique Recherche from Embassy of Beauty online. You just need to sign up, no questionnaire or inquisition AFAIK.

I tried the pigm 400 version when it just came out. I did like it for how bright it made my face but it's not as good on the pore refinement and general glow as P50. I'd use both alternately if I could but the pigm 400 has a short shelf life of 6 months and I go through a single travel size in about 6 months so it'd be a bit of a waste.

SallieSallow · 13/05/2019 10:49

thanks Bo I'm going to have a look on there as my PC Salicylic is running out so may try one of these as a replacement, I've never considered it before as I rarely go to London and when I do it's work related so no time or inclination to try and find Liberty!

Is the P50V the 'normal' standard strength one? I'm only planning to use it 1-2 times a week and have been using AHAs/BHAs for a long time so presume I won't need to start with the weak one?
