Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Thanks bo It's not for me, a relative was worrying about some hair loss, so I'll pass that info on. I had thought about regaine but hadn't looked into it all yet. Glad to hear you're having success with minoxidil.

Sallie Ime showing that kind of cut to a hairdresser can make them get a bit carried away with layers. So maybe use that to find similar looks on Pinterest that also show the back of it. Or a pic taken of Alexa Chung with that same haircut without the waves.

Hello all,

Relative skincare newbie here looking for advice before I potentially blow £75 on Boots’ 3for2 offer!

I’m 52, just getting into a skincare routine after decades of going to sleep with makeup on and being a little lax with sun cream. So far I think I’ve gotten away with it as my skin doesn’t seem too bad though it is rather fair - the odd spot now and then, some fine lines and wrinkles, a little eye puffiness both above and below the lids and occasional redness (especially when I drink 🍷), but nothing really troublesome that I can think of.

I confess it was the gorgeous French ladies of Call My Agent (especially the actress playing Catherine, for anyone who watched it!) who motivated me to up my skincare game, so I’ve started with French Pharmacy fave LRP and dove in with their Redermic R retinol cream at night. Following the purge (which was helped by applying Effaclar Duo on just the spots at night) I’ve noticed a wonderful softening and reduction in lines, so I think so far so good. I have also started using Anthelios SPF50 in the mornings as I know how important a good SPF is when you use retinol. And always to bed with a clean face!

I’m now out of my first tube and looking to RP, and also to branch out into their other serums, preferably in that brand if there is no reason not to. I have a Trish McEvoy Beauty Booster serum I am finishing up which I use in the morning, and am thinking of the LRP VitC 10 to replace. It’s pretty new and the feedback on escentual looks pretty good but I was wondering if any of the experts here have tried it?

I was also thinking of adding the Hyalu B5 serum at night, as recommended on the LRP website. What is the difference between these serums and their creams with these ingredients?

I have also read the brilliant guides with this thread (for which I am open-jawed and grateful at the generosity in sharing all that detail) and note double cleansing with first an oil and then a cream is recommended. LRP don’t seem to do a cleansing oil - can anyone recommend a good one? Should it be used PM only or AM/PM?

I hope you don’t mind being bombarded with all these questions. I’m really happy I came across this thread as I have read this one and the first one in full and you are all so friendly and supportive to each other, and the knowledge you have and are willing to share is priceless!

Look forward to reading more, and thanks again for all the information!

SallieSallow · 08/05/2019 20:08

Hi mommybunny 👋 glad you found us Smile

Very few of us here are loyal to one brand and tend to pick and choose across various ranges, though LRP cicaplast, the toleriane hydrating cleanser and one of their moisturisers (name escapes me as I don’t use it myself) are very well beloved.

For serums I’m currently using Vichy mineral 89 (hyaluronic) and a Vit c from Timeless. I haven’t tried the LRP ones (not sure if anyone on here has yet) but if you want to stay brand loyal you could use the Hyalu at night (after redermic but before moisturiser) and Vit c in the morning (on clean skin before moisturiser and spf). Serums and actives like retinol do the hard work, moisturisers are just really to seal everything in and provide some skin comfort, most of use quite innocuous ‘bland’ ones that don’t cost a fortune. I’m sure someone will be along soon to tell you the name of the LRP one that’s very popular.

Double cleansing is done at night if you wear makeup and/or SPF. I use simple cleansing oil for the first cleanse, then LRP toleriane hydrating cleanser for the second, both with a flannel. You don’t need to double cleanse in the morning, just wash your face once - but not with an oil and not in the shower.

Hope this helps a bit, I’m sure some others will be along soon with some more suggestions Smile

SallieSallow · 08/05/2019 20:15

Enid I’m thinking I might stick to having a dry cut at the very untrendy hairdresser (as they always do exactly what I want) and asking them to take a bit more length off but not ‘lob’ or layer it. That undone look is pretty much the effect I get with the airwrap on day 2/3 when the curls have really dropped so as long as it’s still long enough for the curling barrels to ‘grip’ I should be ok. I’ll probably do it very gradually though to avoid pouffing/triangle head.

mommybunny · 09/05/2019 08:11

Thank you Sallie, it is very helpful and kind of confirms what I already thought, so good to know I’m on the right track!

(I haven’t killed the thread with my prolixity, have I? I’ve done it before.)

botemp · 09/05/2019 19:30

Hi and welcome mummybunny, I love Call My Agent too, though I watch more for the clothes than the skin Blush

As Sallie already said different brands have different strengths. LRP is a great support player but it's not my go to for active ingredients. The retinol is a good starter retinol that's easily available but it wouldn't be the first one I'd recommend if someone asked unless they specifically wanted something they could pick up in Boots and weren't too fussed about paying more than average for an average product.

For a cleansing oil, most of us use DHC on here. Simple also do one that is very affordable but not many on here have used it yet and it isn't always easy to find in shops. Oil cleansing is only for the PM, no need to double cleanse in the morning.

I haven't seen any information on the LRP Vit C10 yet, can you link it? I have a sneaking suspicion it's maybe the same product that L'Oréal just launched in the US, it's in a tube?

The hyla B5 is one I wouldn't waste my money on, it's very expensive and it's really not that special and it has fragrance. Hada Labor has just/is about to launch at Boots and Amazon UK, all extremely affordable in giant packaging, otherwise if you're looking at timeless for a Vit C, they also have a hyla B5 for not too much money. GOW at Victoria Health also do one for little money. Vichy mineral 89 is also good but on the pricier side in the UK iirc. Personally, I find hyaluronic acids a bit overhyped, they don't always work the same for everyone, if you have bad luck it pulls moisture form your skin instead. Glycerin is less fancy but feels more reliable so having that in the top five of the INCI of a moisturiser is great if dehydration is not a main concern. I wouldn't buy into something as a separate standalone serum unless you have a specific issue that requires a higher concentration and/or the specific ingredient (like Vit C) works at its best in a non cream base.

mommybunny · 09/05/2019 21:04

Wow bo, thank you for your feedback Flowers!

I am afraid my impatience could not compete with your very reasonable warning about getting carried away with spending in the OP. I went to Boots this evening and came away with a haul. BUT, I did not get the Hyalu B5 serum because they didn’t have it. I got the Vit C10 serum (link below), topped up my Redermic R because I’m really pleased with it and Toleriane Ultra Overnight cream because I don’t have an overnight cream and my Trish McEvoy Beauty Booster serum has a HA in it and I’m not quite finished with it yet.

I wouldn’t call not having access to the Hyalu B5 dodging a bullet but it’s still good to know that if you think it’s a waste I haven’t bought it. Fwiw I never intended to pay full price and was only interested because of the 3for2 offer - it would have worked out to about a 29% discount when you factor in what else I wanted to buy.

Will definitely check into your other recommendations and report back on the Vit C10 - looks like I’m the guinea pig though never having used it before I have nothing to compare it to. It is not in a tube but a bottle with a stopper like the Hyalu B5. They swear the bottle protects from UV rays.

Have a lovely evening, and thank you again!

EnidButton · 09/05/2019 21:05

Hi bunny 👋🏻 welcome to the thread. Cake

Sallie Gradual and with someone you know sounds like a good plan. Although I'm the last person to give hairdresser advice. Blush I'm still contemplating forking out ££££ for some top celeb hairdresser in London just to try and get a cut I like, but imagine paying all that, travelling etc and it still not being right? I need to start doing the lottery. I'd be very good at extremely rich.

SallieSallow · 09/05/2019 21:42

Mommy (or do you prefer Bunny Grin) that Vit c looks interesting, I don’t think I’ve seen one containing salicylic acid before. Let us know how you get on with it.

Enid I’ve found the more expensive and upmarket the hairdresser is the more likely they are to do what they want and not what I want! So think I’ll stick with cheap and cheerful, plus with my personal space issues/dislike of being touched by strangers I don’t think I could bear to sit through all the washing, drying, styling etc. Just give me the cut and get me out of there Grin

mommybunny · 09/05/2019 21:57

Sallie as my dear departed dad used to say (he was from the Deep South), “you can call me anything you like, just don’t call me late for supper”. Grin

Looking forward to trying my new toy tomorrow! Will definitely report back.

mommybunny · 10/05/2019 10:12

Just FYI, Call My Agent is getting some love in the Guardian today, along with confirmation series 4 will start shooting in October!

SallieSallow · 10/05/2019 14:02

I take it you mean the Deep South of the US Bunny and not Cornwall Grin do you go back to the States much as that would open up a whole treasure chest of skincare not available or very expensive here. And Sephora!

I’ve never heard of Call My Agent before, might have to check it out.

I’ve Dysoned my hair as I’m going out tonight, it’s peeing it down here so this might be the Big Test to see if the curls/waves last or if I’ll end up with major frizz.

Baloonphobia · 10/05/2019 15:00

Hi everyone, I'm 36 and new here and I'm looking for some advice as I'm fairly clueless. I badly need a moisturiser and sunblock recommendation for oily skin. I never have dry skin, its very, very oily. My makeup sometimes just slides off but I find the clinique superbalanced foundation suits me. Can anyone help shiny me? On the plus side, I've no lines at all.

mommybunny · 10/05/2019 18:28

Yes Sallie, Deep South as in US, not Cornwall Grin. He was Southern but I was a Damn Yankee (raised in New Jersey).

Oh yes, I have done lots of damage over the years in Sephora, and Blue Mercury, as well as the counters in Nordstrom, Saks and Neiman Marcus. I had a HUGE Trish McEvoy habit, but mostly in the colour cosmetics (I have enough eyeshadows to last me till I’m 100, I’m not kidding!). I am running down the remaining bits of TM skincare I still have, not wanting to get too attached as it is so much more expensive here and difficult to find - Selfridges and Harvey Nics are the only retailers I know of here. I don’t get home as much as I used to so again, am looking to find a skincare regime I can easily replenish here.

And definitely check out Call My Agent if you have Netflix!

botemp · 10/05/2019 19:12

Bunny, I've had a look at the LRP Vit C, and a few things stand out, it has salicylic and a pH of 5. Vit C wants a lower pH to be stable so I'm a bit in the dark how they're managing that. I'd keep it in the fridge to be on the safe side.

There's a downside and an upside to the high pH, the free acid content is low so it's not going to be particularly full on but that's usually a good thing when you're just starting out, so perfectly good for someone with little knowledge about actives (not insinuating you are, just how the product is designed) that can easily be picked up in a shop without any risk of unintended harm, even if overused.

It's a sensible choice for an in shop product, that respects the potential irritation of the skin which is good because misuse of unfamiliar products at high strengths will only lead to continued inflammation which is arguably probably more ageing to the skin than not dabbling with actives or any other skincare at all (SPF excluded, obvs). But it wouldn't be the first choice for someone with very specific needs with regards to Vit C and who has built up tolerance already.

Hi and welcome, balloon. Have you read through the info sheets in the OP already? We don't really like to rattle of product recs as skincare is so specific, you may be very oily genetically but equally it could be down to the products you use. Both scenarios will have completely different needs.

OP posts:
EnidButton · 10/05/2019 20:56

Just a note to say my skin is very sensitive today and I'm feeling a bit sad too. Bit like things are just before a period but that's just finished so not sure what's causing the inflammation. I have razor burn and my eyes and nose are red. My lips are blue just to mix things up. 🙄 Ugh.

I've listened to my body and left the eyebrow plucking and face razoring for another day. In the past I would've ploughed on and made things worse. So although I'm not trying new products very often, I have learnt lots from the thread and how to be patient with my skin. Progress I think.

Baloonphobia · 10/05/2019 22:41

Sorry! Will do that now.

botemp · 11/05/2019 11:09

Isn't it hay fever season atm, Enid? I know you can develop allergies out of nowhere.

OP posts:
banivani · 11/05/2019 15:13

Well I’m currently waiting for the doctor with a rash covering ALL OF ME (photo attached of my arm which is very lightly affected) so I can confirm that allergies or SOMETHING can just come out of the blue Angry

🐌 Fantastic Skincare: New Year, NuFaces
SallieSallow · 11/05/2019 15:45

Oh heck Banivani that looks sore Sad hope the doctor knows what it is and can give you something that helps.

Enid I’ve got sore eyes and a sore throat at the moment, thought I was coming down with something then remembered the time of year and yes it’s good old hay fever. I’ve also got a rash on my forehead but I used one of those root touch up hair dyes last week so pretty sure it’s from that.

banivani · 11/05/2019 16:19

Yes I spared you the pic of my stomach Wink which is ridiculous. Home now with cortisone pills that I have to take for a few days. Used the waiting time to catch up with the skincare thread among others Smile

I have to say everyone seems to be trying an awful lot of things and I’m quite paired down and unimaginative myself.

mintmagnummm · 11/05/2019 17:07

I'm another one who's skin has become more sensitive and sore eyes at mo too! I've been unwell and on antibiotics too! Just under 13 weeks until my wedding now so am also highly stressed 😩. Fibromyalgia has flared, as has my body dismorphia.

mintmagnummm · 11/05/2019 17:09

@CJDoesTheJackal what mascara was it you said you were using instead of the bb smokey eye now? I need to buy one asap

EnidButton · 11/05/2019 20:41

bo I think its the right time for spring pollen hay fever but it's not that. I do get a tiny bit of it in Summer (grass and flower pollen) but not much. It's more my skin being blotchy. That said I look bloody great today Grin Skin even looked nice under the harsh supermarket lights. Plus my hair that I was ready to cut off yesterday has turned onto Disney hair today. So goodness knows what's going on. 🤷🏻‍♀️

EnidButton · 11/05/2019 20:42

Bani Let is know what the verdict is. I hope it's not really irritating. Flowers
