Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

@TantricTwist I'm brighthair on there

@botemp nope just a random look I wanted to try! I'm enjoying smudging liner at the minute rather than the clean cats eye look, my makeup is definitely changing with age Blush

EnidButton · 05/05/2019 18:43

it's like the colours were made for you.

I think so too. They're perfect! Brings out the green in your eyes Queen

Tried a sample of a clarins eye cream today and my under eye concealer hasn't budged or creased at all. Slightly annoying that I like it because it's not rich enough for nighttime use so I'd have two eye creams on the go. But it is really nice. Cant remember the name but involves kangaroo flower. I swear they make things up. 🦘

EnidButton · 05/05/2019 18:47

Tant Didn't know an aloe Vera stem could be kept that long. That sounds good. DH is using a gel on his poor scalp at night to soothe the itching (psoriasis, just in front of scalp) so I think he'd like that.

Sallie Def keep the dyson. You deserve nice treats. It sounds amazing if it helps with drying etc. I have a parlux that does that a bit with my hair, although it doesn't cut down drying time, it does this magic smoothing thing that baffles me every time. I bet the dyson is like that x100.

TantricTwist · 05/05/2019 19:32

Enid when the Kangaroo plant Clarins creams first came out remember we were all confused about the fact we couldnt work out which part of of the animal they might be using Glitterball Glitterball

Olli ooo er missus

SallieSallow · 05/05/2019 19:35

I don’t know how the dyson does it, not sure if it’s the shape or the technology but it took me less then 10 mins to get my hair 80% dry (didn’t dry it fully as wanted to do the curls on damp hair) and it wasn’t frizzing up or standing on end with static which is a minor miracle so yes I think it will be a keeper Smile

I’m also very impressed with the NARS TM, it gives good coverage whilst still looking very natural, I prefer it to my IT cosmetics CC cream for every day wear. Just hope it’s not being discontinued now.

I was intrigued by kangaroo flowers Enid and had to google - seems like it is a real thing and may have skin care benefits

EnidButton · 05/05/2019 23:21

Tant Oh yes! My memory is getting worse. How could I forget. 🏀🏀

Very interesting Sallie. It's kind of pretty looking in an alien kind of way.

No idea about any firmness yet but the tiny bit of shimmer in it really helped lift the dark areas. I have a sample of the face serum too but the Shea butter was putting me off...quite fancy trying it anyway.

Tsmummy08 · 06/05/2019 08:40

Hello all, hope you've had a bit of sunshine this weekend! I need some hair advice... last Friday I had 8" of hair chopped off, so it's now sitting at the bottom of my neck, maybe 1.5-2" below chin level - it hasn't been this short in 25 years (!) so I'm not exactly sure how to style it (blunt bob)... I've got the coarse, grippy, kinky (according to my hairdresser) hair that would probably suit the airwrap but can't justify the ££.

Can anyone recommend any products to help with styling? I've got a wand curler thing and some travel tongs that will have to do for now for equipment but are there any products anyone would recommend to bring out curl/movement? That spray wax sounded interesting Tantric.

Thanks all!

SallieSallow · 06/05/2019 09:42

I know you’re not going to fork out but I’m not sure if the curling bits of the airwrap would work on hair shorter than shoulder length Tant as they need a good bit of length to grip on to.

I don’t have any recommendations though as until I got the airwrap I’d given up on any kind of heat styling.

Have you tried the curly girl method? It didn’t work for me (gave me waves but they looked tatty and unkempt) but might be worth a try.

CJDoesTheJackal · 06/05/2019 11:17

Sounds like we've got similar hair Tsmummy (I've name changed). My hair routine is:

Pureology Hydrate shampoo and conditioner
Bumble and bumble invisible oil
Parlux hairdryer

Once very couple of weeks:
Phtyo clarifying shampoo
Aussie 5 minute conditioner

Once every 3-4 weeks:
Philip Kinsgley Elasticised (life changer)

This combination has turned the bane of my life into my crowning glory.

I posted upthread about a body lotion with acids but I didn't get a reply. I'm sure someone here uses one? Paula's Choice? Bottle too small? That's all I remember.

YesQueen · 06/05/2019 11:32

@CJDoesTheJackal I like the palmers aha one, works really well on me but it doesn't smell good!

SallieSallow · 06/05/2019 11:46

CJ I think Bo posted about what she’s using. I’ve tried the palmers one and didn’t rate it (odd smell and made my legs itchy) I’ve also had a hand chemistry oil with acids which was quite good but tiny bottle so lasted no time. I use Bioderma itchy skin relief moisturiser every day as it’s a spray so really quick and handy, and Eucerin 10% 2-3 times a week. Neither have AHA but the Eucerin has urea which is an exfoliant and I really like it.

You could always buy a cheap aha toner (think Superdrug do one) and use that before your usual moisturiser, especially if you just want to use it on specific areas.

botemp · 06/05/2019 11:54

CJ, I replied upthread about exfoliating body lotions I'm using/have used.

Tsn, IME the shorter the hair the more you have to do with it but it's less hassle since it's shorter. A diffuser will get your natural curl out pretty well but I do feel these shorter cuts usually look better when using a curling wand after blow-drying it straight, flattening the ends and keeping them out of the wand, no larger than an inch barrel. The GHD creative curling wand is meant to be really good for shorter cuts, it has more of a tapered oval shape. I'm contemplating getting owner as my current iron is a bit meh.

For those with a Parlux, which model do you have? It always seems such a stock answer on here but there's so many different ones, surely they're not all the same?

CJDoesTheJackal · 06/05/2019 12:45

Apols. I missed that. I'll scoot back and look.

cad186 · 06/05/2019 20:16

Where can you buy the Toleriane Hydrating Cleanser please? I've tried to look online but nothing is jumping out at me, and I've tried to go back through these threads but think it might have been discussed a while ago! Thanks!

Tsmummy08 · 07/05/2019 17:02

Thanks for your help.. CJ (is that you Pupsie?!), I'm sure I've used a sample of the Pureology hydrate, smelt lovely. I'll try the Aussie deep conditioner and Elasticizer trick, thanks!

Bo I've got a similar wand to that GHD one, just need to dig it out - it was impossible for me to use on my own hair, which was thick and long.

It's taking a while to get used to having short hair - funny how ones identity gets a little wrapped up in these things! I'm making more effort with makeup etc as it doesn't feel like I can "hide" behind my hair so much.

SallieSallow · 07/05/2019 19:02

It took me a while to get used to shorter hair too Tsmummy - though mine is not really short by most people’s standards! I prefer it now and can actually Do Stuff with it, might go even shorter next time Shock I can’t do a proper bob as I get triangle head, a very long ‘lob’ might be ok though.

botemp · 07/05/2019 19:32

Cad, easyparapharmacie is probably the most used on here for those in the UK:

www.easyparapharmacie.co.uk/toleriane-caring-wash-400-mlanti-discomfort-anti-dryness-sensitive-skins-la-roche-posay.html?_ga=2.65716838.95850269.1557253308-2113456122.1557253308

I'm currently contemplating a lob Sallie, I like the length at the front but not so much how it sort of sits limply on my shoulders. I've had it before and it's really high maintenance but since I started on Minoxidil (working really wells for me, hairline back to where it belongs and hair definitely thickening up, and used off label on my brows- I now have tails on the end that don't need to be penciled in to be visible) I have lots of short-ish baby hairs so it needs a lot of styling anyhow to not look like I had an encounter with an electrical socket.

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 07/05/2019 21:16

Oh heck Bo I don’t like the sound of high maintenance, mind you it might be manageable with the airwrap and I’d keep it long enough to tie back or wear up if I really couldn’t be bothered styling, possibly something like the pic attached. I’ll have to find a proper hairdresser though, don’t think the older ladies place I go for my dry cuts would give me what I’m looking for Grin

CJDoesTheJackal · 07/05/2019 21:29

Yes that's me TS. Thanks for the info on body lotions bo. No idea how I missed that!

EnidButton · 07/05/2019 21:53

Love that look Sallie It's that polished undone look that looks so good.

Bo Which minoxidil products are you using? Sorry if you already said.

EnidButton · 07/05/2019 21:54

(That's a lot of 'look's 👀)

EnidButton · 07/05/2019 22:02

This is the Parlux I use Bo m.lookfantastic.com/parlux-3200-compact-hair-dryer-red/10481845.html

I don't find it as fast, drying wise, as my Babyliss one so I blast it 90% dry with the Babyliss first and use the parlux to smooth and finish off. I was very unimpressed when I first got it as a lot of posters on S&B had said it dried their hair faster then usual so it didn't meet my expectations. Then I realised it did wonders for frizzy bits and seems to add a bit of weight to my hair. Wouldn't be without it now.

Talking of hair. I've realised I don't have straight hair with slightly wavy bits. If I leave it to air dry or add a curling gel when it's wet and only partly heat dry, I actually have slightly wavy hair with very wavy almost curly bits. This is new! Explains the puffiness after washing and drying and why I think my ends are often dry. Anyway, I'm reading up on the curly girl method.

botemp · 07/05/2019 22:04

I always find pictures like that a bit deceptive, there's a lot of time and effort in making it look like there's nothing to it, it's a lot more effort than just the cut. That's sort of the issue with the lob too, you basically spend quite a bit of effort to make it look like you did nothing at all and there's no lazy way out as buns and ponytails are off the menu.

Enid Minoxidil is prescription only over here but because I need the foam version it's easier just to order it from lookfantastic as the pharmacy charges extortionate prices. It's the Regaine 5% foam for women, even though it's available without prescription in the UK I would say not to use it without seeing a derm, for me it was pretty clear I had female pattern hair loss related to PCOS which is what it works for but just general run of the mill thinning it may not do anything for and there are a few potential side effects to consider.

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 07/05/2019 22:30

Hmm I thought I could easily tie my hair back or put it up at that length but I guess it depends how short the back is. Maybe I should just get it cut to that length all the way round and not have the lob. I think I could get that look with the airwrap but then again there might not be enough length for it to grip for the curls. I’m also very wary about getting the dreaded triangle head if I go too short, might have to do it gradually and stop if I start to pouf up Grin

cad186 · 07/05/2019 22:59
