Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Yes. I prefer it to the LRP one as I find that leaves a very very slight residue. My tap water is very soft if that makes any difference to deciding. My DH has mild rosacea and is using up a lrp one that I didn't want. It seems to be helping the redness a bit. Alongside proper prescribed gel for it obviously. But in the last few days with the water spray the pinkness is less. So it's just personal preference which brand.

This article weirdly popped up when I was browsing

SallieSallow · 22/04/2019 09:51

I don’t think I created an account for Timeless either Bo I can’t find any details on it if I did, but yes they have a lot of 10% discounts, there’s one on at the moment and they also sell Biore and Hado Labo.

I like the Timeless Vit c though haven’t used it long enough to see any major results, but it doesn’t make me itchy and I like the watery texture. I’m hoping mine hasn’t gone off as I hadn’t used it for 6 weeks + but it doesn’t seem to have oxidised and it’s been kept in the fridge.

BeardedMum · 22/04/2019 10:05

The last few weeks, having just finished my beloved dermalogica face cream but been on holiday and slow to order a new one, I have just slapped some Nivea body lotion on my face (quite greasy) before a bit of boots n7 foundation. I have never had so many compliments on my skin. Practically daily someone has commented about how lovely my skin looks. Even my male colleague!!

Is anyone else using Nivea on their face? I remember reading a thread here about the blue cream and I am sure someone was using it on their face too. It just feels so wrong to use body lotion on my face. Will I end up with clogged skin from all the grease or will I just save a lot of money whilst looking 10 years younger?

Skinfulnappies46 · 22/04/2019 19:14

Thanks everyone...plenty of choice there . Hopefully will find one that suits me!

JDSTER · 22/04/2019 19:20

Thanks sallie and Bo. I think I’ll try the Timeless one, once this bottle of DE finished and see which I prefer.

SallieSallow · 22/04/2019 19:28

My face would not be happy if I used body lotion on it Bearded but I have oily skin prone to blocked pores and breakouts, plus some creams itch/sting my face and eyes so I have to be quite careful what I use.

I’d probably buy a separate face moisturiser if I were you but you could look for a more ‘basic’ cheaper one instead of the dermalogica. Eucerin 5%, cerave PM and a few la Roche posay ones are all quite popular here.

TantricTwist · 22/04/2019 20:38

Beardedmum that's great you get on so well with the Nivea cream.

I, like many others on here, have quite temperamental skin which is why we are continually testing producs to suit, if only we were as fortunate as you to be able to slather on body lotion without getting a reaction.

JDSTER · 22/04/2019 22:05

Personally I wouldn’t put body lotion on my face. Likely full of fragrance and pore clogging ingredients.

mintmagnummm · 23/04/2019 06:17

Beardedmum my skin would go absolutely mental if I put Nivea body lotion on my face! It would sting, go bright red, break out etc! But if it works for you then that's great, you're lucky you can get away with it x

botemp · 23/04/2019 07:57

I thought the blue tin Nivea was for the face? My grandmother has been using it on her face for forever. Never used body lotion on my face, but for regularly use whatever body lotion is left on my hands in the ends of my hair.

Bearded, at the end of the day moisturiser is moisturiser. Body moisturiser tends to be more occlusive and contain more water, so it's not a bad option for temporary relief of dehydrated skin. I wouldn't with Nivea on account of the fragrance. Cerave moisturising cream is a face and body moisturiser in a giant tub that would probably be a better choice, or the Eucerin 5% mentioned previously.

It may just be that with age you're dryer than you think and only acknowledging the dehydrated aspect. If you've been oily or combo all your life there's usually an aversion to richer creams when they may be of benefit.

SallieSallow · 23/04/2019 22:11

According to Nivea’s website the blue tin one is for daily use wherever skin needs care, so face or body I guess but not specifically for the face. I think it would be too perfumed for me, the lotion in the blue bottle makes my legs itchy.

My NARS TM is being delivered tomorrow, just wondering how people prefer to apply - hands, brush or beauty blender?

I’ve also ordered a dyson airwrap Blush QVC had it on 4 easy payments so with their 30 day MBG thought it was worth trying out. I had to have my hair cut fairly short (well short for me it’s still just past shoulder length) as I wasn’t looking after it properly when my Mum was ill and it got all matted. I actually quite like it this length and am hoping I can do more with it now, hence the airwrap.

TantricTwist · 24/04/2019 01:03

Sallie I always apply it with my hands as I do all my foundations as I havent quite got the hang of using a brush without it showing brush strokes or wiping off most of the product Confused
I'm intrigued by the Dyson Hairwrap, I just wash and go with wet hair out the door and it's dry by the time I reach the end of street pretty much.

I've just started using REN wake wonderful night-time facial it feels nice and I wanted to try something different in the evenings. I'm coming to the end of my REN V-CENSE revitalising night cream which hasn't wowed me but saying that my skin has been looking normal ie not dry or red or bumpy.

I'm not loyal to any night creams yet so I'm happy using different ones alongside my differin and PC BHA.

TantricTwist · 24/04/2019 01:06

I currently have a selection of moisturisers I dislike that I'm using as hand creams so my hands are softer than ever and not horribly greasy as with normal hand creams.

I'm also using a couple as foot creams Grin

mintmagnummm · 24/04/2019 06:07

Sallie I always apply mine with the real techniques beauty blender. I can't use brushes on my skin

SallieSallow · 24/04/2019 18:48

NARS TM is here and is a great colour match which is lucky seeing as I took a punt on not testing IRL. I normally use a beauty blender but find it thins out foundations and gives a lighter application which I’m not sure I want with a tinted moisturiser. Might just have to experiment and see which method works best.

Tant my hair takes ages to dry, when it was long I avoided heat styling completely but had to wash it in the evening and often went to bed with it damp. Now it’s shorter it’s in better condition so going to see how I get on with this Airwrap. It was meant to be delivered today but I was at work so will have to re-arrange.

JDSTER · 24/04/2019 19:46

Glad you’re pleased with your colour choice sallie I apply with fingers and use a beauty blender to ‘press’ in a little more product around the sides of my nose.
I bought another NARS TM this week. John Lewis had 20% off (I think) and I had £25 voucher so only spent a few pounds on it Smile

EnidButton · 24/04/2019 22:34

Really interested in how you get on with the air wrap Sallie

For foundation I use a real techniques 'expert face' brush and then a damp beauty blender to really blend it out. Makes it invisible. Trying out an Eco tools blender as they're supposed to be good. Seems firmer than the RT one I usually use but RT aren't very consistent with the material they use so it's hard to find one that feels just right now. Hoping the ET one will be a good replacement.

Haven't ever found a tinted moisturiser that I like but last time I tried one was when they came in 3 shades of beige and shade ranges have improved loads since then. Might give them another go.

EnidButton · 24/04/2019 22:35

a beauty blender to ‘press’ in a little more product around the sides of my nose.

I do this too. And any marks that need a little bit extra.

CJDoesTheJackal · 24/04/2019 23:17

My boss has recently ordered a ton of products to explore different packaging ideas for our new products we are bringing out. Last week he handed out the actual products and I bagsied the Facetheory Porebright N10 serum. Have to say, I really like it! Some of the dedicated niacinamide products have irritated me, but this one doesn't. Very happy with my freebie 😀

TantricTwist · 24/04/2019 23:49

Enid I have the RT expert face brush and I just see brush stokes after I use it and my foundations just never seem to settle properly, they look thinned out. I use it in a circular motion. Am I meant to use it differently and apply more than one layer? Which seems a waste of product.

EnidButton · 25/04/2019 00:48

I kind of dab and buff in one motion. (Hard to describe without you seeing it!) Pump of foundation on my hand, tiny bit on brush, then dab that around another bit of my hand to cover the brush more evenly. Then do the dab, small wipe motion into face. I do go over it again once the brush is bare to buff in more. I take a less is more approach and just add extra where I need it. I think I copied Lisa Eldridge so you might find one of her foundation application videos useful.

The slightly damp sponge after the brush makes a real difference. I use it around my eye concealer and the blend the edges of cream blusher too. Helps it look seamless.

That was a convoluted explanation sorry! Blush Basically try using less and building it up, go over it a few times without product on the brush and get a slightly damp BB to dab/wipe any lines and bits where it's sank into pores.

botemp · 25/04/2019 09:17

I had a demo for the airwrap and it really isn't for me. My hair is about collar bone length at the moment and it's just too short for it. The curls didn't really hold well and they looked very 80s prom. They even admitted as much, it works best on thick (but not too thick) hair that's about bra strap length and longer (but not too long). The barrels are basically too large for shorter hair, they're 1.5" IIRC, if I curl my hair I need an inch barrel or less.

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 25/04/2019 09:39

My hair is past shoulder length Bo but not quite bra strap length anymore, the one I ordered comes with 2 sizes of curling things, 3 (!) brushes and the dryer itself. I did wonder if my hair might be too thick for curling, but I'd also like to try straightening/smoothing with the brushes now my hair is shorter. I've got 30 days to test out so if it's not worth the rather eye watering price it will be going back, and I've only paid for 25% of it upfront.

NARS TM is on this morning, applied using the JDSTER method which seemed to work well, will give the Enid method (brush then BB) a try tomorrow Smile

mintmagnummm · 25/04/2019 12:58

Sallie just to let you know I posted your frezyderm this morning 1st class x
