Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Definitely subtle TS which is great. That’s what I’d want, no one commenting other than “you look well” Smile. Thanks for sharing your photos.

Hope the migraine has eased Enid.

princessTiasmum · 10/04/2019 18:00

I am sorry but i dont think that is a good result, very subtle yes, but my daughter had hers done in February, and they look almost gone,
I dont know how much you will have paid, but it might depend on area, my daughter paid £400 i think but that is this area
So sorry dont want to spoil whatever you think but if they look much better to you,and make you feel better, that is all that matters, and of course in real life might be a more noticeable difference

EnidButton · 10/04/2019 21:29

I think they look almost gone in a natural way. It's better to be gradual and maybe add more of needed once it's settled than overdo it. It's trickier to get things taken out surely.

YesQueen · 10/04/2019 21:51

Definitely. I went really light on Botox the first time and now I'm "FREEZE my face" Grin
I have lots in between my brows and then not very much in my forehead

princessTiasmum · 10/04/2019 23:17

I agree its better to go carefully than put too much filler in, although it can be taken out again, well dissolved i should say,and it is a very tricky area close to the eyes,
The main thing is if you are happy with it, and the difference will be more noticeable to the person having it done

EnidButton · 11/04/2019 01:23

"FREEZE my face"

Grin

I had a very hot, very long bath with a face mask (papaya enzyme) and Elemis milk bath 🛀🏻 and it's lifted my mood quite a bit.

New fairly £££ bedsheet is disappointingly rough even after a wash. Any tips for softening them welcome. I don't think glycolic acid or cicaplast will work...

Tsmummy08 · 11/04/2019 08:05

Princess I paid the same as your daughter and was told I'd have a 50-75% improvement because of the fat bags under my eyes and the quality (or lack thereof!) of my skin - how old is your daughter? That definitely makes a difference to the results :) I'll be going back for a revisit to see if more can/should be added, but I'm happy with it as a start. Thanks to everyone for your comments!

OldGrinch · 11/04/2019 08:48

Morning all thanks for the thread and all advice have been reading with interest. I have a question re Vitamin C face cream. I have been using the REN Vit C Glow cream and it's lovely but very expensive for quite a small bottle. Can anyone recommend a cheaper alternative that does the job! Thanks x

NameChangingGame · 11/04/2019 15:08

Apologies in advance for a hijack..... I posted a new thread on the topic but no replied so I'll try here.
I'm in Japan. So many fantastic brands to try. I've picked up some DHC and some SPF, but I'm wondering about the premium brands. Are they any cheaper here? Or are there any dupes ( particularly for suqqu moisture lotion which I had in an advent calender which I love!) DH is quite adventure-tastic so browsing around is limited!!
Anything else worth picking up?
I realise this is quite niche but any pointers very welcome.
Thank you!

botemp · 11/04/2019 16:40

Grinch, I'd never rec a vitamin C cream as it's just a useless vehicle for vitamin C, it's probably a derivative and evidence for those is thin. It's always going to be a serum which will be 30ml. Should last 3 months at least (if kept in the fridge). Budget picks, they're not my favourite, bit they do the job, GOW Vit C 23% and Timeless CE ferulic, the latter the preferred of the two but that has to absolutely be kept in the frit.

Name, oh loads. I'm travelling myself at the moment so may have to look up some things. If you're in Tokyo there's also a giant beauty emporium somewhere that sells a lot of high end brands a bit like Tkmaxx, old packaging or otherwise discontinued for knockdown prices.

I'm not sure on Suqqu pricing, usually it's comparable, maybe 10-20% cheaper. I'd look for those in duty free. On the higher end, the makeup brushes are amazing, Chikuhodo (the Z series especially, they make the Suqqu brushes as well, these are the same price but higher quality) and Hakuhodo are both great. Type of brushes you buy once and never have to replace (with proper care).

I mentioned the Flowfushi eyeliners here recently, but they may no longer be for sale. Fancl cleansing oil is quite pricey to get here but reasonably priced there. Ipsa do a transaxemic acid toner that's really great, especially if prone to pigmentation, I've forgotten the name but it's a very characteristics bottle. Pola is a brand that's highly regarded but not known outside Japan. Cle de Peau do soms great makeup products that are hard to get hold of in Europe. Addiction and Ayanko do some beautiful makeup. I can go on...

Oh bath salts! They're great in Japan, Muji ones are very nice and we'll priced.

Cosme.net is good to gauge what's popular, there's and English version too. Cdjapan sells a lot of the makeup brushes so you can check for prices there.

This is the CYO and CT flawless filter on me, managed to do some editing so I can post a pic 🙄

EnidButton · 11/04/2019 16:56

Is that amazing glow from the CT do you think Queen? Looks really good.

YesQueen · 11/04/2019 17:06

Yep definitely! I put a tiny dab on after my foundation

EnidButton · 11/04/2019 17:18

Very tempted by it then. It's the kind of 'highlight' I've been looking for rather than a glittery one.

EnidButton · 11/04/2019 17:19

I know it's not a highlighter btw but I think it would work well as one. As fabulously modelled here. Smile

YesQueen · 11/04/2019 17:24

Definitely, it's v sheeny rather than glitter
I have heard good things about Kevyn Aucoin Candlelight too

EnidButton · 11/04/2019 22:11

Sheeny is good. The have heard of the KA one. I'll have a look at it. Thank you!

EnidButton · 11/04/2019 22:11

*haven't heard

Tsmummy08 · 12/04/2019 06:45

Queen I tried that CYO one, it's nice, buttery as you said! Also tried the 2 foundations that SH recommended last week for dry skin (new Clinique one and Boots Hydraluminous) - on first impressions the CYO was defo better on me than the Boots and on a par with the Clinique (Even better refresh). I've got a sample of the Clinique so will give it a proper trial this week and will have another go with the CYO, thanks for the heads up Smile

YesQueen · 12/04/2019 08:35

@Tsmummy08 yay, I'm glad you liked it. I do prefer it slightly to the no7 one. It seems to sit better on my skin I have three as back ups

NameChangingGame · 12/04/2019 17:11

Botemp thank you thank you, not in Tokoyo. Been maximising the JR pass the last few days and off to internet free island for a week, but will have another opportunity when we get back and also in duty free.
Thanks again will have a look at those. Have been on cosme also via Google, hence the Annessa SPF (? Sp - I've packed it away now).

botemp · 12/04/2019 17:30

Name, if you've still got internet this Reddit guide is worth a read, also useful info on getting things tax free in shops:

www.reddit.com/r/AsianBeauty/comments/6qvunx/where_in_the_world_japan_shopping_guide/

Also, forgot to mention previously, the aerosol spfs are really good in Japan but they can't be send by post so difficult to get outside Asia. Also made a mistake with brand names, it's Addiction by Ayanko and the other brand I meant to mention is Three. On the cheaper end of the spectrum, Canmake has some great products in very kitschy packaging. The concealer in the pans is really good, as are the cream blushes. I also really like their SPF called something uv mermaid Confused, no alcohol but still really cosmetically elegant and costs next to nothing over there.

What do we think about this recommended by India Knight product lixirskin.co.uk/products/good-skin-day-shaker ?

Ingredients
Aqua (Water), Perfluorohexane, Glycerin, Perfluorodecalin,
Perfluoroperhydrophenanthrene, Oxygen, Phenoxyethanol, Pullulan, Sodium Hyaluronate, Perfluorodimethylcyclohexane, Ethylhexylglycerin, Palmaria Palmata Extract, Rosa Damascena Flower Extract, [+/- Synthetic Sapphire, Mica, CI 77491 (Iron Oxide), Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, CI77891 (Titanium Dioxide)].

Described as being a product for occasional use when an extra boost is needed. Says something for India that despite being stung by her previous recommendations (Babyliss Big Hair my backside.) and it having hyluronate in it, I'm still tempted.

Although colour me stupid, but oxygen as an ingredient? Huh?

EnidButton · 15/04/2019 22:39

It's her Times column this week btw. I've used up my 2 free articles so can't link to it or take a screenshot.
