Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

@botemp CYO is in Boots, I think they brought it in to replace the seventeen brand. By butter Grin I mean it doesn't cling to dry patches or need loads of blending, it just kind of glides on and is really easy. I know, it goes on better on me than Chanel les beiges or Lancôme teint idole or any £££ I have tried!

I was googling for a new liquid liner that was a brush tip not pen hence the Clio. I wish it was a tiny bit blacker but I'll sacrifice that for the preciseness!

botemp · 02/04/2019 08:08

It's pricier than Clio but the Flowfushi Mote Liner is really, really, good. It's from Japan and made with calligraphy grade brushes and is scarily precise, can also get a very thin line on. I like it in brown-black, not sure how black the black is though.

I googled and found this. Interesting

YesQueen · 02/04/2019 10:23

Oh I completely forgot the abh dipbrow gel! I got the shade caramel, I do prefer darker brows and it works really well. Quite liquid and you can apply with the brush (mascara wand type) or a slanted brush. I just sweep it on and it colours and defines the hairs fine for me. Shade range is v good

PositivelyPeach · 02/04/2019 16:43

Hello Wise ones 🙌🏻

Can I ask about at home Dermaplaning? Has anyone tried it? I'm a blonde with a lot of peach fuzz, and it's getting worse - which just makes my make up look a bit crap.

It looks easy enough.....

EnidButton · 02/04/2019 16:54

Thanks Queen I'll check it out.

I need some bits so that's handy Mint

If anyone has a promo code for Elemis that they don't want, I'll have it! Smile They sent me a "haven't seen you in a while" 20% off but it ran out the day before I decided I wanted something for a gift.

EnidButton · 02/04/2019 16:59

Peach I use those Lilibeth eyebrow razors on my face fuzz. Works very well and my skin looks fresher and make up goes on smoother. Subtle difference but enough to keep me doing it.

However about a week afterwards I often get break outs. This is usually when it's not a brand new razor or if I've gone over an area too much and annoyed it.

If you try them, be light handed, clean your face before and after with something unperfumed and gentle (lrp dermacleanse is the one I use all the time) and make sure the razor is very clean and fairly new.

Connie5858 · 02/04/2019 17:51

Hi I posted a while ago about changing my foundation from Estée Lauder double wear to nars tinted moisturiser
Well I did thinking there was no way I would get away with it
But it is lovely and after all your wonderful skincare advice my skin is fine with the nars
And when I first opened it I though I would barely get a months supply but after 4 months I’ve loadsleft
So I no longer needed a heavy foundation

botemp · 02/04/2019 18:04

Queen, I didn't know Flowfushi had ceased trading Shock still seems to be available on eBay and at Kirei Station. Good to know they're available under a new name and I like the extra colours.

Technically for dermaplaning you do need to use a new blade each time. If it's just for peach fuzz you can also just use a bikini razor with any sort of cream base, oil cleansers work well too. Proper dermaplaning is a bit more involved, requires a certain angle, pressure, etc. Not something I'd advise doing yourself and if you're exfoliating with acids already there really isn't any extra benefit. Whatever you use, I'd always sterilise with some alcohol just to be safe.

That's great Connie! Having fun with foundation is great but it's nicer when it's an option rather than your only choice Smile

YesQueen · 02/04/2019 19:29

I dermaplane myself with a scalpel Blush

EnidButton · 02/04/2019 19:40

Quick note to say my chin and under my jaw is breaking out. No product or dietary changes. I also have bad thrush and feel even worse than usual so guessing they're connected in some way. I usually get spots when I get thrush. Don't know if it's the cause or treatment that creates the breakout but too fed up to care so long as it goes away soon. Feel grotty.

JDSTER · 02/04/2019 21:34

connie I use NARS TM (I might’ve recommended it, I usually do now). I’m glad you like it. You’ll probably find after a few months, if you try ELDW again, it’ll feel really heavy and difficult to blend on your skin.

PositivelyPeach · 03/04/2019 09:37

Enid I primed the Lilybeth eyebrow razor so will be arriving today. I'll let you know I get on. I watched loads of YouTube tutorials, so I feel comfortable having a go.

I'm having my Botox topup on Friday so wanted to get it done before then as you have to be gentle with injected areas for a few days.

Bo I have been shaving my upper lip for years, I've got a mole, right on my lip line which is just too painful to pluck. I have to use a specific razor, the cheaper the better and certainly no double/triple blades. I have others which I can pluck with ease and won't grow back for weeks. But the shaved areas seem to need it done every three days.

I take a lot of supplements (fertility issues) and they make my hair grow crazy. I'm hoping that the nature of dermaplaning produces different/longer results? Wishful thinking possibly.

Overall I'm happy with the texture of my skin, so peach fuzz really is the only objective.

Queen Wow! I'm impressed! I'm guessing you've been doing it for quite a while?
I used to use a scalpel to shave the dry skin off my feet, but that's easy - especially when your callouses are about 3 inches thick!

EnidButton · 03/04/2019 17:28

Peach They're very easy to use. Out of curiosity what supplements do you take? (Dm me if you don't want to post them here) I've taken things to help fertility in the past (still ttc) but can't remember what now. I know selenium.

Feeling a bit better today. My mood dropped through the floor yesterday. Going to try and go somewhere nice tomorrow and shake it off.

EnidButton · 03/04/2019 17:29

Oh and Footner is amazing for feet Peach! Though prob already said that to you at some point. They should give me commission the amount of times I wang on about it. Grin

EnidButton · 03/04/2019 17:30

*I know selenium...is one of the ones DH takes.

Missed a bit out there.

PositivelyPeach · 04/04/2019 09:57

@EnidButton I've inboxed you about the supplements. It's a long list! If anyone else is interested I'm happy to share.

Well, I tried with the Lilybeth razor, I'm not sure if I've got the technique right. I was expecting a closer shave? I can still see some short hairs in the light. My skin was a bit red last night so I just used some Rosehip oil before bed.

No redness at all today, feels fine. It does look a bit brighter, the real test will be when I apply my make up.

RuggyPeg · 04/04/2019 12:08

First time of using Skinceuticals c e ferulic yesterday. It'd better be a bloody miracle worker for the price of it! It felt just like other vit c I've used but no tingle at all with it. Also gave my new retinol a try too. Am hoping for a bit of peeling in a few days!

EnidButton · 04/04/2019 15:14

Thank Peach Cake

I find I do have to go over it more than once with the lilibeth thing. That's why I get irritation sometimes as I can get carried alway.?

RuggyPeg · 06/04/2019 08:13

2 days of retriderm and I'm peeling like a bugger. Which I LOVE! It must be strong stuff cos I've done a full on tret regime before and so my skin is bomb proof! Makes it a bit tricky to apply make up but will just put on the SPF and go without. Just slapped on some c e ferulic, which didn't sting thankfully. Wish it was in a different bottle though, as I'm worried I'm going to drop it and create a v expensive bathroom tile cleaner!

botemp · 06/04/2019 09:59

This made for interesting reading this morning:

www.scientificamerican.com/article/anti-aging-discovery-could-lead-to-restorative-skin-treatments/

Ruggy , I'd be keeping that expensive CE ferulic in the fridge, otherwise you'll be tossing it out prematurely rather than on a tile.

I still have minor peeling but never got the full on Tret horror show. I'm at using it every other day now. Not sure if I'll build up beyond this, don't really see the point but I'll probably move up strength after summer. Should probably do an updated recap like queen for my tret routine as I'm using additional and new products as a result.

Hi all 👋

Just to let you know that my family emergency (Mum was critically ill) ended with her sadly passing away. The funeral and most of the formalities are over now so going to try and get back to some kind of normal - or as normal as is possible.

I haven’t been looking after my skin (or anything really) for the last few weeks and it’s really showing, I look and feel like I’ve aged about 10 years Sad I’m still a bit inbetween locations and probably will be for a couple more weeks but should hopefully be able to start focussing a bit more on self care now.

Hope everyone is well ❤️ just off to have a read back now.

TantricTwist · 06/04/2019 11:46

I've been using Caudalie's Premier Cru The Serum and Caudalie's Premier Cru The Rich Cream and as well as loving the texture of both, my skin is beautifully smooth and plump in the mornings. It's bloody eyewateringly expensive but so worth it.

And as for dermaplanning on face etc I use a normal Gillette Mach 3 razor on the hairs under my chin as I got so fed up plucking the tenacious bastards. I dry shave.

I use Nars TM as well and I love it, although I have also been using very successfully Rimmel Match Perfection with the blue lid. I use shade 103 true ivory which goes on slightly grey but seems to oxidise to a perfect match for my skin tone. Not entirely sure it is actually oxidising but it is a perfect match colourwise and lasts all day.

I have been summoned away so have to cut this short for now

botemp · 06/04/2019 12:34

Oh Sallie FlowersFlowersFlowers

So sorry to hear you've been going through all that.
