Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

sleep, that's a little bit more full on than a standard microfiber cloth. I'd be hesitant to use on the face as it is a physical exfoliator so keep use at a minimum (once a fortnight or week at most). But I haven't seen it in real life so perhaps it's more gentle than described? I may also be annoyed and coming out a bit strong against it with the whole natural/chemical blurb on there Hmm

Makes a lot of sense Tsn, I am mostly a bit of a true carpet bagger and waiting till the last minute as a no deal decision would see the GBP drop as well, so I stand more to gain to wait with my Euros in hand.

I've not tried it but I do have it on my list of things to look up when in the UK next week, but the flower beauty concealer (and the foundation) are meant to be really good, recently launched at Superdrug. Do you like the By Terry one (apart from the price), I've always been wanting to get that.

Stoney, yes there's an advantage to using vitamin C in the morning as it boosts your sunscreen protection, prevents free radical damage as it acts when it happens rather than retroactively repairing the damage after (at night). However, if pigmentation is your issue and that is what the use of Vit C is primarily for there are some advantages to use it at night as the active isn't needing to act as above it can focus more succinctly on tackling the pigmentation.

6 is very young so I'm hesitant to pull out the big guns. A clay mask once or twice a week on nose and chin can be useful, a simple one (Cattier is good) not the full Amazonian or glamglow ones. Potentially consider the CosRX good morning cleanser which has a gentler version of BHA in and washes off so exposure to actives is very minimal. I do personally find oil cleansers (especially the DHC) good at keeping pores clear but it seems a bit excessive to be double cleansing a 6 year old. Alternating is a possibility?

stokey I bought neutrogena visibly clear spot proofing daily wash (amber coloured not grapefruit one which is harsher I’ve heard) for my son and it’s been very effective.
It’s in a pump dispenser bottle so you can just use a little bit around her nose. It contains salicylic acid, the ingredient that will help with her blocked pores.

It’s very easily available in the high street and usually on offer somewhere so I’d probably try that first

JDSTER · 09/03/2019 13:25

Off to Primark to check out Steinherr skincare stuff

Tsmummy08 · 10/03/2019 08:57

Bo Yes the byTerry concealer really is lovely, and if money was no issue, I would definitely repurchase. I'll check out the flower one, thanks :)

botemp · 11/03/2019 10:00

Thanks Tsm, I'll pop into SpaceNk when I'm in London. I'm struggling a bit with the Sisley at the moment, it's coming near the end of the tube and I think it's oxidising due to age.

JDSTER, did you get anything from AS at Primark. I'm curious about their BHA cleanser as it's very affordable so would be good to know if it's any good for that target audience.

Hi Bo my haul here. Once Cosrx low ph cleanser finally finished, I’ll give this one a go. I remembered you mentioning the exfoliating pads so thought I’d pick those up.

Nice haul JDSTER did anything else take your fancy?

I still haven't tried out the majority of my stash which I bought a while ago, I did post pics at the time. The only thing I have the same as yours is the low-pH sulphate free cleanser which is still unopened.

Be interesting to see how we both get on with it.

EnidButton · 12/03/2019 16:09

I like the look of the pads JD Nice packaging too.

I did my biannual bathroom cupboard and general beauty bits clear out yesterday. Even though it gets done every 6 months or so I seem to have accumulated a lot of stuff since October.Blush
So satisfyin now its organised again, looks great and makes more sense now I've moved some things around.

Seeing all the only slightly used products, made me decide I'm not buying any new things for a while, unless I'm 99% sure it's perfect and will be used up. I'm at the point where I know what I like and what works for me. So repurchases when things run out but no "maybe this'll be good" things.

EnidButton · 12/03/2019 16:11

That was quite boring sorry. Grin Just getting it out there so I'll stick it.

EnidButton · 12/03/2019 16:11

*stick to it.

grumiosmum · 12/03/2019 16:24

Please may I ask this thread for your recommendations for a say moisturiser with SPF, night cream & eye cream for 50+ skin, which does not break the bank (budget around £25-30 per item).

I started a thread which didn't get much response, but you ladies obviously know what you are talking about - and I can't wade through 14 pages and multiple previous threads to extract the info I need. Thanks.

grumiosmum · 12/03/2019 16:24

day not say

JDSTER · 12/03/2019 18:15

Not boring at all Enid I’m the same, other than primark stuff I haven’t bought much now I know what works. I’ve got some John Lewis vouchers and I’ll use them to repurchase NARS TM in the next few weeks. I wasn’t tempted Tant for same reason. I’ll report back once I’ve started using the primark products.

grumisomum we tend not to give out blanket recommendations without more detail about your skin. Not being awkward it’s just there not an ideal moisturiser or eye cream. We also advocate separate SPF not one within a moisturiser as they just don’t give enough UV protection. No need to read all the threads but have you looked at embedded documents on first page which Bo has spent a good deal of time preparing. We’re all about educating ourselves about skincare Smile

grumiosmum · 12/03/2019 18:36

Thanks for putting me straight JDSTER.

I'm not really into all that palaver, I just want something simple & nice. I look young for my age so much have been doing something right.

EnidButton · 12/03/2019 20:15

JD I'll see how long I last. I don't buy loads but love a browse of the beauty departments online and I'm easily tempted. Otherwise it gets a bit boring. Grin I do love a good organising session though.

Stokey · 13/03/2019 06:54

Thanks for the recommendations for DD2. Think I'll start by trying the Neutrogena cleanser. She's a very active creature and unlikely to endure a face mask! Seems so weird to get blackheads at her age.

TantricTwist · 13/03/2019 21:07

Hi Enid I was wondering where you had gone

I have so many products too and like JDSTER I'm more than happy with my routine.

I've just starting using Balance me wonder eye cream and once I've finished that I'll be giving the Primark Steinherr eye cream a trial.

TantricTwist · 13/03/2019 21:08
  • Forgot to add I'm very happy with the Balance me wonder eye cream
EnidButton · 13/03/2019 23:38

👋🏻 Always lurking about Tant Grin

botemp · 14/03/2019 06:13

Stokey, yes, probably best to keep an eye on it. I know girls are getting their periods a lot younger these days and showing some hormonal activity in the run up to that but your DD seems very young to be in that phase already.

I've only just realised from JDSTER's picture that the Primark range is very similar looking to Drunk Elephant with the white and poppy pastel colour scheme.

Sallie, how are you getting on with the timeless vitamin C? I think it's drying me out but I've been ill for a bit so I'm not sure whether it's down to that (did maintain skincare routine) or down to the product.

Has anyone seen Olli about elsewhere? I'm a bit worried about her.

Hi Bo and everyone 👋

I’m in the midst of a major family emergency so skincare routine (and nuface!) has gone on the backburner, I’ve not been at home much and am still in survival mode. Hopefully I’ll get back to some sort of normality soon but probably won’t be around much for a wee while yet.

botemp · 14/03/2019 12:32

Flowers Sallie, hoping for calmer waters soon or nearby manageable Primark rather than overwhelming giant one, if you will Smile
