Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

SallieSallow · 15/03/2019 21:43

Thank you all so much for your kind thoughts ❤️ I don’t want to go into detail on here but it’s been a pretty horrendous couple of weeks and still not sure of the final outcome though things are looking up slightly. The poor old nuface has been abandoned again, I will actually get round to using it properly one of these days....

JDSTER · 16/03/2019 09:28

Sali Hughes is doing a two parter in The Guardian, best beauty under £15. Today it’s body/makeup and skincare next week. I love lists like this Grin. I can’t link it but easy enough to find

YesQueen · 16/03/2019 14:11

@JDSTER two of those on the list are my faves too! The as I am Co wash, and the No7 foundation are both amazing

JDSTER · 16/03/2019 15:04

There’s nothing I actually want to try particularly from her list. I’ve already got muji nail clippers Grin, Essie gel polish (used Essie for years) and Kate moss rimmel lipstick (don’t like it- too drying). Oh and Elnett hairspray!

YesQueen · 16/03/2019 15:22

I just got these two new brushes. A foundation blender and the other is a highlighter brush

Queen That round stubby brush looks like it'll feel gorgeous to use. Really like the look of it. Is it the blender brush?

Thanks for pointing out the SH list JD love lists like that. Nothing there I want really apart from the cnd treatment (which I'm sure has been mentioned on here before?). I bought that Paradise mascara last week after a thread on S&B but I didn't like it much. Definitely lengthening but a bit flaky looking and had a spider leg clumping effect. I'll try it again without doing my usual 'wiggle the wand to the ends' thing. It's not that cheap for a high street mascara either.

The Elemis cream oil I've been using every other night has caused two dots of milia on my cheekbone. It makes my skin much more hydrated and plumped looking though so I'm going through the ingredients to see what I can get that does the same but without the coconut oil in it. Possibly it's just good old glycerin.

Talking of glycerin, has anyone ever tried Guerlain meteorites base? The one with the pink balls in the bottle? I'd like a primer with a subtle glow and it seems to fit.

Also the new foundation from Lancôme looks good. Looks like the same shade range as teint idole but a much lighter finish.

YesQueen · 16/03/2019 17:09

Yep the foundation blender brush. Incredibly dense and soft and feels nice to hold

CJDoesTheJackal · 17/03/2019 21:54

Has anyone tried the new LRP serum?``

vaz119 · 18/03/2019 11:00

Can I ask for some help please...

Long term lurker/infrequent poster!

I really nailed my skincare last year thanks to this board. I've got a simple routine that really works for me

But...

Over the last few months I've been getting some completely horrendous hormonal chin spots. It's always around totm although cutting back on dairy definitely helps!

They are large red and 'cystic' in nature in that they don't really come to a 'head', just sit there under the skin in a hard lump that is really sore to touch ,and difficult to cover well with makeup. When they eventually calm down, I'm left with the red mark for months

Things I've tried...
Salicylic acid (just dries the skin on top making then harder to cover)

Cos rx patches (never come to a head)

Cicaplast... Helps calm the redness a tiny bit

Any recommendations??

Any help much appreciated x

mintmagnummm · 18/03/2019 18:01

I've got a sample of the new no7 foundation, hydra luminous or something?! Queen have you tried it?

YesQueen · 18/03/2019 18:04

Yes, it's really lovely especially on drier skin

EnidButton · 18/03/2019 18:08

I think my DM would like that. What's the finish like?

EnidButton · 18/03/2019 18:21

Hi Vaz welcome to the thread Cake

I used to get cystic acne every month, (think that was why I joined these threads when they first started actually), which of course take weeks to go so the marks etc overlap with the next batch. It's disheartening and bloody hurts!

A topical antibiotic fluid from the GP (zineryt), that I just dabbed on to each individual spot rather than all over, reduced them much more quickly and stopped them spreading. Definitely worth trying. Much gentler then bp or other topical creams.

Also since cutting out wheat I haven't had any at all. Still the occasional spot but nothing to bother me. I'm also a bit dairy intolerant (wind Blush) so I wonder if you might be wheat/gluten intolerant too? Mine were just before my period and sometimes at ovulation time so I always thought they were hormonal. Could be worth a try for a couple of months?

A good clay mask for your chin area would help. Vichy grey clay mask is the best I've found as it doesn't cause any breakouts, or irritate any spots already there, and isn't drying. I just use it on my nose and chin. I've got it on now! Must go and take it off.

Last thing which you probably already know, is to try not to fight against your skin and be gentle with it instead. I got into a bit of a war with mine and made it worse with every squeeze, pick and scrub. Going back to basics and being patient worked wonders.

EnidButton · 18/03/2019 18:24

Vaz I'm still mostly avoiding acids btw so I'm not the best to answer anything about those. Someone else here will know though. Smile

mintmagnummm · 18/03/2019 18:56

I'll use it in the morning and will let you know what I think!

mintmagnummm · 18/03/2019 18:58

Vaz I get cystic breakouts too, I actually have 2 above my brow now they are very tender! I've got some acnecide cream on them and hope it will help! I also can't use any acids!

mintmagnummm · 18/03/2019 19:00

I think pupsie has already mentioned this but I love Bobbi brown smokey eye mascara but it dries out so quick! £25 each time for a new one is steep for something that doesn't last long! I'm on the hunt for an alternative! Pupsie have you found anything yet?

CJDoesTheJackal · 19/03/2019 13:26

Mint I've changed to Lancome Mr Big but the small sized one. I have quite small eyes so find a smaller wand better. I don't know how long it will last but it's cheaper. I'm sure it's small sized but I can only see one size now for £21. It is easier to remove too - I think Bo mentioned that the BB Smokey Eye is a pig to get off and that was my experience too (using Clinique TTDO eye make up remover).

(I've NC'd)

mintmagnummm · 19/03/2019 13:31

Cj thank you (are u pupsie?) I didn't find the bb one difficult to remove at all weirdly! I'll take a look at the Lancôme one definitely so thank you x

mintmagnummm · 19/03/2019 13:34

I tried the new no7 foundation today and no surprise I don't like it. First impressions yesterday were good when I tried it on the back of my hand, it didn't look dry like most do when I put them on my very dry hands! But on my skin this morning it looks very dry and chalky and as the day has gone on my skin feels a bit prickly and tight

RuggyPeg · 19/03/2019 21:25

Vaz - led light therapy is proven to help. When my cystic acne was raging, the red and blue light combo really helped to take all the inflammation out of my skin.
