Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Thank you for the review Lumene sounds promising. I’m still a bit worried about it leaving a white cast on me as I’m not pale but think she does a money back guarantee on her website doesn’t she, so might give it a try.

Let us know how you get on with the Medik8 Wine

Winenotttea · 03/03/2019 22:07

I’m wondering whether to put a before pic up, but equally I’m wondering whether to do it all via Instagram and get loads of gifts that will dilute the results!
Nah, I’ll do a before and after on here.

JDSTER · 03/03/2019 22:20

I hope your skin has calmed down ruggy.

Thanks for update bo on primark products. Good timing as our local one doesn’t sell them but I’ll be dropping my son at a party at the weekend where there’s a store that stocks them.

wine I’ve been using Medik 8 crystal retinal for maybe four months now. I’m using the higher strength and have never had any dryness or irritation with it.

Thanks lumene for thoughts on Dr Sam SPF. My thoughts were I wouldn’t use moisturiser underneath it, when I saw the ingredients.

JDSTER · 03/03/2019 22:23

bo I meant to ask about the GOW Vit C oxidising. I’ve been impressed with it so far. How do you know it’s oxidised? Smell or something else?

banivani · 04/03/2019 11:25

I think it's oxidised when it's brown, isn't it? (hiya all!)

I bought the GoW vitamin c last thread or the thread before. Got a faulty bottle, couldn't be arsed to complain. Didn't enjoy it much, and I got suspicious of the brown colour that came quite soon. I think it oxidised. Just didn't love it. Surprisingly I'm enjoying the TO vit Cwith HA. It's a bit gritty, which I like because I can feel myself spreading it (I'm a sad person). Have noticed a clarity of skin.

SallieSallow · 04/03/2019 12:15

I've not used GOW but the vichy vit c oxidised on me, it went brownish and also started stinging - not sure if that was co-incidence or not though.

I'm still very happy (so far) with the Timeless one.

Winenotttea · 04/03/2019 23:34

OMG I’ve just learned that I’ve been using oxidised Vit C on my face for the last 6 months. That will teach me for buying cheapo rubbish off Amazon, it was orange when it arrived.

Thankfully I’ve just ordered the Timeless Vit C that a few people are using. With immediate effect I’ll stop using my crap stuff and throw it away.

I did have GOW Vit C but gave it to my mum as it was soooo sticky on me, mum loves it and doesn’t experience the sticky feel at all.

I do love this forum!

RuggyPeg · 05/03/2019 10:38

I use GOW vit c but won't re-buy cos it's way too sticky. How does it oxidise tho, as it's in an airtight container with a pump.

TantricTwist · 05/03/2019 22:12

Well the faint pink scarring I had on my cheeks has finally gone which I never thought would happen in a million years.

I credit this to all manner of products I've been using the last few years.

I have however been getting huge spots on the side of my cheek near the ear and under my chin. Fortunately not too visible and not down to using cleansing balm which is the usual culprit so I think it's actually from my diet ie my sudden craving for all things sweet. I am usually a savoury person, yet sweet in demeanour naturally Grin

Winenotttea · 05/03/2019 22:21

My Medik8 wonder serum has arrived, just about to put it on and am expecting to look 20 years younger tomorrow otherwise it’s a money back claim 😂

JDSTER · 05/03/2019 22:23

wine Don’t be put off by the orange colour Grin

Winenotttea · 05/03/2019 22:30

Sheesh, it really is orange! It smells like coconut, I’ve done one pump for forehead and then one pump for each cheek/ side of face.
I’m telling ya, if I don’t look amazing in the morning then I’m calling Watchdog 😂

Winenotttea · 05/03/2019 22:33

It feels very heavy, I think that I’ve put too much on?

mintmagnummm · 06/03/2019 08:18

Sallie creave 👌🏻 thank you.
I now know it was 100% my pureology shampoo and conditioner causing my sever allergy! Have read similar reviews online and as soon as I stopped using it my allergy calmed down. My skin is still messed up and think it's going to take a while to fully heal! Am extremely upset as not only has my dismorphia flared up because of the allergy I now need to find a new shampoo and conditioner to use! Had finally found something that didn't make my scalp itchy and made my hair in much better condition! 🤬

CJDoesTheJackal · 06/03/2019 08:43

My skin has finally settled down after the cysts and spots and tightness caused by, I believe, the Jane Iredale. Am using up my Chantecaille. I've had it since October 2017 because it was purchased with Space NK vouchers from work for my bday. Mind you, I have been alternating with a Laura Mercier one. I'm tempted to try the NARS but I might just RP the Chantecaille when it runs out: I have about a quarter of a tube left.

(NC'd btw).

Tsmummy08 · 06/03/2019 14:46

Morning all.. is anyone stocking up on beauty-related things pre-B-word at the end of the month? I'm considering doing another EPP shop for LRP products, and getting some of my other must-haves...

In other news, I met up with a friend from the States in London last week whoo'd brought a Belif Peat Miracle Revital cream over for me - I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say it's miraculous but it's VERY lovely if you have dry skin and coupled with ditching alcohol for the last 5 weeks, my skin is pretty damn glowy at the moment! Recommended if you like heavy creams and have a handy friend/relative heading to the US Grin

Oh and I went to Liberty's to get some BR P50V - got the smaller size which will last years no doubt.

botemp · 06/03/2019 16:43

I was wondering who you were previously CJ. Glad to hear things are calming down again, must leave you cautious on trying another new base product as a result though.

Ha! Are we talking beauty 'prepping' now Tsn Grin I actually do have a list ready of things I regularly buy from the UK and will go ahead and purchase in bulk once it's clear whether it'll be no deal or not. Most of it I can purchase elsewhere just at a higher cost except for my fermented cod liver oil supplements, they'll be difficult to get elsewhere but I can get an American version but that may or not come from fish caught near the sea of Japan and still be radioactive Shock think that's mostly scaremongering but better safe than sorry and all that...

Otherwise the B-word has mostly put me off ordering things, I'm quite happy I'm not head over heels in love with timeless or GOW Vitamin C, though they'd be under the import taxes and VAT threshold so wouldn't be an issue to repurchase in case of no deal so long as infrastructure is up and running at some capacity but things like Drunk Elephant wouldn't, though I suspect spacenk and cult beauty would quickly set up shop in the EU if needed. Also not sure what my rights are in case of electronics like the Nuface, possibly all those EU guarantees default if the retailer is not inside the UK?

JDSTER, I kept the first two GOW (old bottle) in the fridge and I did think that could have been causing extra issues with the formula and clogging up the bottle. So I kept the new bottle outside of the fridge but that got clogged too and I've had to clean it out a couple of times, potentially doing a bit of damage in the process, possibly. Anyhow it turned orange relatively quickly and has been noticeably less potent.

Does anyone know any alternatives to pureology? I used hydrate shampoo and strength cure conditioner, this combo was perfect for my hair but gave me the worst allergy on my skin I've ever had! Am now on the hunt for replacements! Wedding is in August so the clock is ticking, please help

Skinfulnappies46 · 06/03/2019 19:13

mint you seem to have terrible reactions to things. Have you ever been to a dermatologist to get allergy tested? Would be definitely worth it.

mintmagnummm · 06/03/2019 19:18

Oh I know skin it's terrible isn't it! No I haven't been to a dermatologist I've just found out by trial and error things that are ok for me. Luckily I've found body and skincare that have been fine now its just my hair!

sleepraptor · 07/03/2019 13:00

Thanks for all the information on these threads, I have read through a lot and am now using Paula's choice BHA 2%, a facial sunscreen and using a Bravura derma flannel as a result! One question, would you use both the derma flannel and the BHA 2% on the same day? I feel like I've read somewhere you shouldn't but I can't find it?

botemp · 07/03/2019 15:19

Sorry, sleep, I'm not familiar with derma flannels. Is it a microfiber cloth or similar?

OP posts:
sleepraptor · 07/03/2019 17:29

botemp - yes, I think so, it's this: www.bravuralondon.com/products/dermaflannel
It's an exfoliating flannel.

Tsmummy08 · 08/03/2019 06:35

Bo Yes indeed, beauty prepping :) just trying to mitigate possible price increases - or at least delay when I have to pay them!

I'm also looking for a new, budget-friendly concealer - I've just run out of byTerry Densiliss (sp?) and "the" Sisley one - any favourites for dry, crepey undereye skin? Any thoughts Olli? I think you rated the MUR one but anything under £20 would be great!

Stokey · 08/03/2019 07:06

Hi skincare gurus, bit of a lurker here.

Thanks for all the amazing info sheets and time you've taken to put it all together. I'm mid-40s, reasonable skin, bit of sun damage (freckly) and lines are increasing.

I notice that you have vitamin C in the am and niacinamide in the pm.

My current routine is cleanser, hyaluronic, niacinamide, SPF 50 in the am. Then double cleanse, GOW vit C, GOW serum, facial oil or twice a week glycolic acid & retinol followed by oil/night cream.
I've only got the Vit C recently so would appreciate any tips. It's does feel slightly tingly when I apply but no side effects.

Is it preferable to use it in the am?

Also on another note, my poor 6 year old DD has been getting lots of blackheads on her nose and chin. I'm getting her to clean in the pm with Cetaphil but any tips would be much appreciated.

Thanks team Smile
