Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

A couple of people have told me I “look well” and someone chatting to me this morning said I looked “well rested”. I used NuFace this morning before work Hmm

mintmagnummm · 01/03/2019 02:34

Thanks Sallie I'll go boots tomorrow and have a look x

SallieSallow · 01/03/2019 16:08

That's promising re: Nuface JDSTER

I've had no comments one way or the other and have not noticed any difference myself, don't look any worse this week (I don't think) for lack of use. I can feel myself slipping out of the routine already Blush must get back to it.

TantricTwist · 01/03/2019 23:44

I used the eyeko mascara today from the M&S advent calendar and as a daytime mascara it is great. I had no panda eyes in the slightest which is an absolute miracle for me. Yay.

PositivelyPeach · 02/03/2019 09:29

Just wanted to pop on and say Hi, I'm a lurker - bit of a skincare junkie with no purpose. My 2019 resolution is to get a great regime that works, and to stop getting sucked in by all the fancy advertising.

Your fact sheets are amazing! I've just made my first Paula's choice purchase after deciding to step up my retinol from LRP 0.3%.

Wish I'd found you guys years ago Smile

SallieSallow · 02/03/2019 10:55

Hi PositivelyPeach 👋 Bo’s factsheets are amazing and really informative, shout up if you want any reviews or opinions on any specific products.

Tant which eyeko mascara did you get? I got a set of minis from qvc last year and a skinny one recently and am not keen on any of them to be honest, I think it’s the brushes I don’t get on with. Also find it hard to remove, doesn’t seem to come off easily with just hot water and pressure like the DHC one does.

TantricTwist · 02/03/2019 11:21

Sallie I loathe the brush as its curved Confused and bloody annoying to use but was in admiration that I got no panda eyes. Its called Lash alert wake up and go. It has tri peptide in it to promote lash growth so I will see it out till the 4 ml bitter end last dregs. I just removed it with my Nivea double effects. I could try just hot water next time as online it states they are tube mascaras? although it doesn't confirm this on the actual tube.

Hi Peach I love my PC BHA

TantricTwist · 02/03/2019 11:25

Sallie it's not as lengthening or curling as my Benefit BadGirl mascara, which always gives me panda eyes and being waterproof is nigh on impossible to just swipe off under my eyes so I just want anything now that just blimming well stays in place and regardless of how lengthening or curling it purports to be.

I probably should dye my lashes again today, they seem to be getting quite light and invisible these days.

JDSTER · 02/03/2019 14:20

tant I’ve heard you mention the bad gal mascara (is it badgalbangHmm?). Have you tried roller lash? I like it for lengthening but doesn’t add any volume so wondered about bad gal. I’ve used they’re real before as well

SallieSallow · 02/03/2019 17:18

I used to love benefit roller lash but after years of using and being fine it suddenly started giving me panda eyes Sad as did Tarte and IT cosmetics mascaras both of which I liked and used for years as well.

I made the move to DHC which is a proper tubing mascara, completely smudge and budge proof but easy to remove and I’m going to stick with it now. It’s not dramatic at all but luckily I have thick dark lashes so don’t need much from mascara apart from a bit of length and definition.

I can’t remember what my eyeko minis are (not at home right now) but they have huge curved brushes and go on very claggy but think it’s down to the brushes. I thought the skinny one would be better and it is, but I’m still not keen on the brush and find it gets overloaded/goes on claggy.

I also thought it was a tubing mascara Tant but it does not come off with hot water and pressure like the DHC one does, I’m using my oil cleanser to remove but takes a bit of effort. I don’t want to use an eye makeup remover as all the ones I’ve tried irritate my eyes.

RuggyPeg · 03/03/2019 08:38

Had a mini disaster!! Decided it would be a good idea to make a scrub paste using The Ordinary vit c powder........Let me tell you.....it really REALLY isn't a good idea. I mixed it with water and slapped it straight on and it immediately sizzled the shit out of my skin. I flung cold water at it but it was too late - damage done. I now have painful, raised, bright red burnt cheeks with marbled white and red dots everywhere. Bloody great. Can only hope it goes with time. This is exactly why skin care is regulated - to try and stop idiots like from burning their skin off 😩

princessTiasmum · 03/03/2019 09:44

Oh, no, RuggyPeghope you are ok, have you anything you can put on to soothe it, and stop the burning, aloe vera, or calamine cream, [not the liquid] but the cream is very good for soothing burns

botemp · 03/03/2019 10:02

Oh dear Ruggy, get some Cicaplast on there STAT. Hopefully it'll settle down soon. Does TO actually suggest using it like that?

I was in Primark the other and saw the new Alexis Steinherr products. Have attached INCIs. The other product is a modelling mask which is actually not horribly overpriced in comparison to Korean ones (unlike the sheet masks). I do like a good modelling mask so will probably give it a try at some point.

The PHA and niacinamide pads looked somewhat interesting. By the INCI probably no rival to P50 as the acid content looks very low but that does actually make them suitable for frequent use. Niacinamide content does look high, I might contemplate them for a morning cleanse, possibly. I'm usually not a fan of the one use pads, tad wasteful and if you don't use often enough they dry out but I've recently took receipt of the Timeless Vit C (liking it so far, not as much as Skinceuticals or Vichy from the get go but time will tell) as I got sick of using the GOW which hasn't been performing all that well since it started to oxidise. Sorry long story short, going down to the kitchen every morning, I haven't quite established the whole washing face before yet so the acid pads could live down there happily for those occasions, potentially.

I've put Cerave on, which is the only thing not stinging but yes, I do have aloe Vera (from my nu face!) - hadn't thought of that. Good tip!!

botemp · 03/03/2019 10:04

Also, hello peach, glad we've been of use Smile

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 03/03/2019 13:01

Oh no Ruggy Hope the aloe Vera helps but agree with trying to get your hands on cicaplast - both the cream and the gel if you can. Bioderma cicabio spf 50 might be an idea as well as it’s aimed at damaged or very sensitive skin.

Those pads from primark do look interesting, I’ve not heard of a modelling mask before. I doubt I’ll ever get my mitts on the Alex Steinherr products though, unless I can bribe someone to brave the Big Scary Primark or they ever make it to the Small Non-Scary one.

EnidButton · 03/03/2019 14:08

Ouch Ruggy! Some spray water (Avene or la Roche Posay pure water ones not the holiday summer type ones with alcohol in) kept in the fridge to spray on your sore cheeks, might help.

cloud1183 · 03/03/2019 16:29

I’ve started using Murad products and am so impressed. I use their ant blemish range as my skin is oily and prone to breakouts but this has really impressed me. I was going to try Kiehls but I got a discount on Murad and glad I did

Winenotttea · 03/03/2019 16:44

Hello ladies and particularly Botemp, this thread is brilliant. I’ve just read the fantastic fact sheet on retinoids as this is definitely something that I need in my life.
If I had money to burn I’d jump straight in with the Medik8 R-Retinoate but alas that is not within my budget. So instead I’m just about to order their Crystal Retinal 6, I need all the help I can get!

One question, should you stop using retinoids when you go on a sunny holiday or say if we had a repeat of last years weather?

Thanks!

mintmagnummm · 03/03/2019 16:52

My skin is going absolutely crazy! Just when I thought I'd found the culprit I've come up in more spots and red lumps! My neck is covered, I have them on forehead, a few on cheek, temples and quite a few on bridge of my nose! I'm baffled! My latest thinking is could it be the pureology shampoo and conditioner 🤔.....

botemp · 03/03/2019 17:02

Hello, wine. If you haven't purchased yet and are indeed in the 'need all the help I can get, skin not particularly sensitive' camp I'd also consider Dermatica, it's a relatively new online dermatologist service that sends you a custom prescription with tretinoin in it (usually) and the dose is gradually built up. It's £20 p/m though I suspect a month's prescription lasts you longer than that month.

Generally the OTC retinoids are not an issue to use in the summer months, just be super diligent with sunscreen (I tend to apply first thing in the morning and then top up at least once on an average warm weather day). If leading a very active outdoor life it may make sense to scale back. Prescription tretinoin can be challenging to use for some during the summer months but it isn't the case for everyone.

Winenotttea · 03/03/2019 17:21

Thanks Botemp, I haven’t purchased yet.
Dermatica looks interesting, I may do an online consultation and see what they come back with.
I’m 48 this year, a smoker and I drink too much! I’m painting a lovely picture aren’t I 😂
I have quite dry skin, getting more fine lines and have wrinkles when I smile. I just think that I need to do all I can given my bad habits! I’ve also lost weight (still losing) and my thinner face definitely looks older than my fat face, sigh!

Winenotttea · 03/03/2019 17:25

Oh and my nasolabial folds and marionettes are getting more pronounced but I feel that they will need fillers to make any difference at all.

Lumene · 03/03/2019 18:01

Back with promised review of Sam Bunting’s Flawless SPF.

Overall impression so far: good.

No white cast (which I thought there would be having seen her video). I am pale with varying degrees of redness which I suspect it rosacea.

Finish is like a good primer, does look a bit soft focus, as described in the videos. Not a matte look but doesn’t make me look too shiny. Haven’t yet tried it with anything over the top like foundation etc.

3 pumps is a lot! Makes me realise I probably haven’t been using enough product with other brands. Takes quite a while to sink in and dry in my skin.

I have used with Flawless moisturiser underneath for now as I want my skin to have a chance to get used to the new product. However I think I could use it with no moisturiser most of the time given its consistency and ingredients. This would help with £ and make a routine with foundation more plausible given morning timings.

Find it confusing having such similar looking containers for her moisturiser and SPF.

Has not so far irritated my v sensitive skin.

Overall very happy with it.

Winenotttea · 03/03/2019 20:17

I’ve bitten the bullet and gone for the Medik8 as the thought of full on RetinA scares me somewhat!
I’m going to take some before photos (not for public use 😂)and chart progress over the next few months, let’s hope I haven’t just chucked £60 down the drain and there is at least some change, I’m not naive enough to expect miracles (although that would be amazing!)
