Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

I’ve not tried JI but I used to be allergic to Bare minerals powder foundation, apparently a lot of people are/were.

Hope you had a great time JDSTER keen to see how you get on with nuface. Think it’s only me & you left now still using it....

Skinfulnappies46 · 24/02/2019 18:58

I’ve just noticed , since putting on my glasses to check my makeup ( which I haven’t actually done before ( glasses for reading ) that my foundation is looking flaky. I wear very little and no powder. I don’t know if the culprit is the biore watery essence spf pilling or flaky skin due to vitamin c and retinol. I use the vitamin c every mornings big and the retinol only once a week. My skin does not seem irritated by either. I used a different spf -Avene today but the result is the same. It could well have been like this for a while as I never bothered getting a proper look with my glasses on.
Any ideas, skincare gurus? 😉

SallieSallow · 24/02/2019 20:42

Skinful I found Biore SPFs very drying and seemed to really emphasise any flaky patches, and I have oily/combo skin. How long have you used it for? as if it’s a staple for you & you’ve not had issues before then unlikely to be that.

What ret are you using? Unless it’s prescription strength I can’t see once a week would cause issues. Could be a combo of all three or maybe just winter skin - not that it’s very winter like right now! What moisturiser are you using and do you use any hyaluronic acid or other serums as maybe you just need a bit more moisture.

This is very good for flaky skin too.

JDSTER · 24/02/2019 21:38

skinful as sallie says, Biore spfs are quite drying, particularly watery essence as it has quite a high alcohol content.

Are you using an exfoliant of some description? Perhaps you need to incorporate one a couple of times a week? Otherwise as sallie says, perhaps a bit more hydration needed.

Skinfulnappies46 · 25/02/2019 17:39

sallie and jdster thanks for the replies. I thought the biore watery essence was a favourite here? What Spf would you recommend that still looks good under makeup?

I have been trying out the new drunk elephant retinol which seems to be very gentle.and very also use the DE TLC exfoliant.I use hyalauronic acid and moisturiser daily.

I have never noticed my skin to be dry before and I do think it is the SPF but it’s not something that can be negotiated. I just need to find the right one.

botemp · 25/02/2019 18:14

You may just want to wait it out a bit Skinful, I think we're vastly underestimating this (past) winter as it hasn't been very cold like last year's but it's been very dry. It's the first time in years that I've noticed some dryness and flaking on me and I've noticed the air itself has been quite dry, so you may be fine with your SPF again once we're in full spring mode. Otherwise the Frezyderm is alcohol free and very primer like, so is the Canmake mermaid one from Japan which is actually a makeup brand.

Pupsie, can't give a conclusive answer on that but it's possible. Mineral makeup is supposed to be non irritating because it's all large molecule size so sits on the skin rather than sits in it, but personally I don't get on too well with things that sit on the skin (heavy occlusives, silicones, etc.). It's not so much that those things sitting on the skin irritate, rather that it's trapping something else that is irritating in.

Skinful I’m using Bioderma cicabio SPF 50 at the moment which is very moisturising, I mostly use it instead of a moisturiser. I’ll move back on to frezyderm once spring is properly here.

Bo you are right this winter has been unusually dry, and it’s still cold at night and in the early mornings so we still have the drying out caused by heating.

Skinfulnappies46 · 25/02/2019 19:39

Thanks bo and sallie. Will have to maybe go for frezyderm or Canmake mermaid as my face is currently resembling a flaky foot !

SallieSallow · 25/02/2019 20:39

If you’re really flaky Skinful I highly recommend the la Roche posay cicaplast gel I linked up thread. And I think the Bioderma cicabio SPF would be worth a try too, at least until we’re properly into spring.

JDSTER · 25/02/2019 22:27

Interestingly this is the first winter my skin hasn’t been dry/dehydrated. I haven’t used HA serum at all but the DE Vit C is quite hydrating so maybe that’s it.

The watery essence is liked on here, by some of us with an oilier skin skinful but just not a good choice if you’re dry, which may be temporary, then you can go back to it.

Just as a point of note, I really dislike the frezyderm. It makes my eyes sting and I never get sensitive eyes. As I was watching the Dr Sam video yesterday about SPF use and making sure to apply right around the eye area and eyelids, I was thinking how that’s not possible with frezyderm, for me. It also makes me quite shiny as the day progresses so a definite no repurchase for me.

SallieSallow · 26/02/2019 07:26

Yes quite a lot of people had the issue with frezyderm & their eyes. Bizarrely I’m fine with it, even though products that are meant to go near your eyes like eye cream and mascara cause irritation.

mintmagnummm · 26/02/2019 11:17

Frezyderm destroyed my eyes too unfortunately, I loved it on my skin though so was gutted I had to stop using it.

mintmagnummm · 26/02/2019 11:19

My allergy rash is spreading and getting worse! I usually get it when I'm on antibiotics which I'm not at the moment so am very confused! I tried a new migraine medication Friday night, it was a nasal spray one but surely it couldn't be this??!!

SallieSallow · 26/02/2019 17:12

It could be Mint have you checked the leaflet re side effects?

Mind you they normally list every possible side effect known to man including death and spontaneous combustion...

I’d definitely go to the gp if it’s getting worse though with it being so near your eyes.

mintmagnummm · 26/02/2019 19:23

Sallie I threw the leaflet because if I read them I have panic attacks! The meds didn't even work anyway so am taking them back to doc, actually have an appt in morning. It's not near my eyes now, strangely the one near my eye has completely gone! But my neck is covered and have red lumps on my nose and few random scratch off tiny whiteheads which are also a common reaction for me. I'm very confused and very upset about it as I don't know what the cause is :-(

CJDoesTheJackal · 27/02/2019 09:26

OMG my poor skin. If I ever even mention changing base again please stage an intervention. I'm convinced it's that.

princessTiasmum · 27/02/2019 10:15

How are the nu facers getting on, i sold mine on ebay,as didnt think it was doing any good, butnow wondering if i have done the right thing, as my jowls now look to be sinking lower
On the other hand, arent jowls just loose skin,? and if so nu face wont do them any good anyway, as it is to tone muscles,
Maybe more something like a skin tightener might be better,
I am in a dilemma now, what can i try next, Confused Hmm

Skinfulnappies46 · 27/02/2019 14:37

Going to give the frezyderm a go as my skin isn’t usually dry but am a bit worried about the potential eye irritation.

mintmagnummm · 28/02/2019 07:45

I'm getting spottier by the day! Red lumps and whiteheads all over face! I had a thought yesterday, I've been using the original toleriane cream instead of the fluid because they changed the formula of the fluid and I didn't like it! Could it be that??!! I can't see a reason why tho! The fluid had Shea butter in it before they changed it and the cream one has Shea butter too but can't be that as i was fine with the fluid before it was changed!! What now!!!

botemp · 28/02/2019 08:46

princess, from what I read Nuface results pretty much go away when you stop using it, so I guess it was working to some extent then. Next step up seems to be nano current and radio frequency treatments, there are some home devices out there (Ziip and Tripollar) but a lot more expensive than the Nuface price point at the entry level. I think RF can't always be used with fillers though.

Skinful, just FYI, the Frezyderm mentioned is the velvet face one.

Doing some research for when I finally start on Tret, looks like the new LRP Toleriane sensitive moisturiser is pretty similar in INCI to the US double repair one that's loved by a few on here. It just looks to be a few ingredients at the end different, and the order of one, but that may be down to how INCIs are regulated differently between here and the US? Have attached pic, bottom one is the US INCI.

botemp yes i agree, i think the results depend on how often you use the nu face, sometimes i would think, ooh, its working, but miss a night and back to jowl droop, and i used it almost every night before bed,
I have tried radio frequency ,but i wouldnt risk now with fillers
I have heard of Tripoller, but not Ziip, will have a look, but i think with pretty much everything like this the results will be temporary

mintmagnummm · 28/02/2019 19:42

It's got to be the lrp toleriane ultra cream! It's the only new thing I'm still using and the spots are getting worse! Doesn't make sense though but it's the only thing left?!
Is the creave lotion worth trying?? I need something for my combination/allergy prone skin. Why do companies keep changing formulations!

SallieSallow · 28/02/2019 20:45

Glad you’ve got to the bottom of it Mint

I really like cerave and it’s pretty cheap now that it’s available in Boots. I’ve not heard anyone here mention any kind of reaction to it though it does have niacimin and ceramides, can’t remember if you get on with them or not?

www.boots.com/beauty/facial-skincare/moisturiser/cerave-facial-moisturising-lotion-52ml-10258275

I’ve been slacking on the nuface this week due to travel and I’m away this weekend too. Hopefully a week off won’t matter in the scheme of things.

mintmagnummm · 28/02/2019 21:26

Sallie I think I'm ok with those ingredients, I did wonder at one point but I never know what my skin reacts to any more it always surprises me! Plus sometimes I think it's formulas rather than ingredients if that makes sense!? It does in my head lol!
Any reason you use the pm lotion as opposed to the original lotion without spf? I'm Goin to boots tomorrow

SallieSallow · 28/02/2019 21:52

The PM one (Boots call it PM on the website but it doesn’t say PM on the tube, it’s the one pictured in my link and just says facial moisturising lotion) has niacinamide and the other one doesn’t. I always used the PM when it was available cheaply from the US on amazon and liked it, so just carried on with it when it became more widely available here, I’ve never tried the other one.
