Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Yes that's right Bo. It's not advisable. It can become counter productive.

DameCelia · 20/02/2019 18:45

Oh no pupsie Shock, the thing I'm most looking forward to when I recover from surgery (apart from being able to drive) is exercising daily, including HIIT on both a bike and a rowing machine!
What is it about HIIT that's not recommended?

SallieSallow · 22/02/2019 18:34

How is your recovery going Dame? Hope the pain has eased up Flowers

Not much to report here, still liking the timeless Vit c and still no itching one week in so fingers crossed!

I ordered an eyeko skinny mascara as a change from DHC and it was on offer, finding it a bit claggy and it’s hard to remove. I got some eyeko minis from qvc last summer and didn’t care for them either but blamed it on them having ‘fat’ brushes, thought the skinny would be better but it’s not. Back to DHC for me.

Tsmummy08 · 23/02/2019 08:06

I'm off for a consult with a Dr later to talk about tear trough fillers... went to the clinic (not my usual place) last week and had a chat with a nurse who suggested cheek fillers might actually give me the results I'm looking for but I'm interested to see what the Doc says... Interestingly my skin looks noticeably better after 3 weeks without alcohol - who'd have thunk it, eh?!! Will report back....

SallieSallow · 23/02/2019 17:03

Let us know how you get on Ts

I’m not sure what would work on my droopy mouth and jowls - I still have full cheeks so not sure I’d be wanting cheek fillers, might end up looking like a hamster 🐹 Grin

mintmagnummm · 23/02/2019 18:37

Something very odd is Goin on with my skin at the mo and I cannot figure out what! I've come up in red lumps on my neck, a couple on ear and couple on corner of eye, mainly on one side of face but I do have couple red spots on my nose too! I have no idea what's goin on but it's stressing me out!

SallieSallow · 23/02/2019 19:59

Could it be an allergy Mint? Have you changed anything (including hair products) recently? I’d see your GP though especially as they’re near your eye too, that sounds like something that needs medical attention.

botemp · 23/02/2019 20:49

I'm the same Sallie, I'd look insane with cheek fillers. My mother and grandmother both had full cheeks so I doubt they're going anywhere.

Dr. Sam has released a sunscreen. I'm actually somewhat interested as it has nano zinc oxide (it's a physical chemical mix) and 5% Niacinamide, and a cosmetically elegant primer like finish and a few good moisturising ingredients. Looks ideal to use with tretinoin but I'm put off ordering anything so long as Brexit is unsettled, what if I love it and then never can get it again due to ridiculously high import charges Hmm

Just wondering how anyone with the nu face gadget is getting on, and what do you think, are you seeing results?
I have sold mine on ebay, got fed up with no noticeable difference after years

SallieSallow · 23/02/2019 21:40

That sunscreen sounds interesting Bo I’ll have a look though I was intending to go back to frezyderm this summer - might have trouble getting that though seeing as it’s a Greek brand. How are you getting on with tret? Think I’ll go back to it soon as I’ve nearly finished the p&m retinol oil.

Princess I’m still plugging away with nuface, not seen any results but I’m only a month in so wouldn’t expect to. I’m going to give it a good 6 months.

mintmagnummm · 23/02/2019 22:30

Sallie nope not changed anything recently, I did switch laundry stuff but this was about a month ago but I guess it could still be that?? Might buy some fairy tomorrow, will have to rewash sooo many things though including bedding and towels! I've taken an antihistamine so hopefully that will help. If my eye gets any worse I'll go docs Monday.

SallieSallow · 23/02/2019 22:32

Hmm just watched the video of dr Sam applying the sunscreen looks like it might leave a bit of a white cast, probably fine if you’re pale like she is but doesn’t bode well for my lovely yellow skin Grin

SallieSallow · 23/02/2019 22:33

It does sound like it could be the laundry stuff Mint especially if you usually sleep on one side and that’s where the lumps are.

RuggyPeg · 24/02/2019 07:28

Princess - I'm sending my nuface back. I cba doing it quite frankly when I can't see ANY visible results. I'll put the money to fillers. I'm just not quite there yet. Profhilo hurt so much that I need to pluck up courage to go get anything else injected into my face!

For those saying they still have plump cheeks but also have jowls, you can have filler in your jawline to effectively disguise the jowls, if you want to go down this route of course.

I'm still plugging away at the retinol, trying to use it all up quickly so I can buy Obagi and Neostrara!!

Tsmummy08 · 24/02/2019 08:02

Hi all, the Dr I saw yesterday actually said I was a good candidate for tear-trough fillers rather than cheek fillers (which the nurse I saw previously had suggested). I've got good bone structure and reasonable volume in my cheeks but there is a noticeable trough which makes me look tired and emphasises the fat bags (so attractive)!. I've booked in for a few weeks time - didn't realise they'd have done it on the spot yesterday and I take fish oil which I'd rather stop a few days before treatment to minimise bruising. Because I'm active and work out a lot, he said I'd probably only get 6 months (rather than 12) out of it, so it may be financially unsustainable but it's been an issue for me for years so I'd like to at least give it a go... will report back of course!

princessTiasmum · 24/02/2019 09:15

RuggyPeg sorry to hear you are not seeing any improvement either, i felt that my original one did help a bit, but the newest one, didnt even seem to feel the same,
My original one seemed stronger, if i accidentally touched where there was no gel, i could feel it and made me jump a bit,the new one didnt and couldnt even feel it,so didnt seem as strong somehow,
I have been wondering if they are making them with weaker pulses
My old one i actually bought secondhand off ebay, the latest was brand new

Pupsiecola · 24/02/2019 10:25

GAH. My skin is having a right moment. I've never really had an issue with spots other than the odd one or two now and then. Now this happens. So sore. I've reintroduced some products I've used before (Cosrx moisturiser and Mineral 89). The only other new product is a Jane Iredale mineral (powder) foundation. I really like it. I've been using it for about 3 weeks. Or, does my blusher brush need a wash (yes). This is my cheek and I have had a couple of sports on the other side. Also, I've switched to Aldi's own laundry detergent but this has been about 6 weeks now.

Which is the likely culprit?

🐌 Fantastic Skincare: New Year, NuFaces
RuggyPeg · 24/02/2019 10:46

I could definitely feel it Princess if I hit a bit with no gel. A little jolt as u say that makes you jump! I just think I'm a bit beyond its capabilities now tho 😁

botemp · 24/02/2019 10:51

I haven't started yet, Sallie, I'm still flying at least once a month until mid April, they're short flights but it's also staying in dry hotel rooms and unfamiliar water quality that's put me off. I might start after I return from London in March though as the April travel is just a quick back and forth and I've been prescribed a very slow introduction routine (once a week buffered for a month whilst continuing to use cosmetic Retinol in same frequency, then one month twice buffered, then one month once a week not buffered and once a week buffered and building up from that point on and phasing out cosmetic Retinol).

Hmm, lots of variables, Pupsie. One thing that stands out is the CosRX, the Korean stuff often has a shorter shelf life once opened than other products, so that's a possibility if it's not a new bottle.

If blusher is in powder form than it shouldn't be that much of a hygiene issue with the brush. However, now that there is a breakout probably best to clean it more often. Same goes for face brush.

Jane Iredale mineral makeup, it depends on your skin. If you don't usually get on well with traditional physical sunscreen then the high titanium dioxide content could be irritating in the same way.

Another option, the recent fillers in the adjacent area? It is heavily denied and protested by practitioners that there is any relationship between fillers and breakouts but it does get reported a lot (specifically with Restalyne though Juvederm gets a mention too), especially in the surrounding areas.

OP posts:
Pupsiecola · 24/02/2019 11:36

Thanks Bo. The Cosrx is new. The reason is stopped using it was I'd run out some more than back and not RP because I'm using DE in the mornings. But DH likes the Cosrx so I bought some more.

It's quite a way from the wheel I had the fillers. It's higher up on the cheeks (ear level) and further towards the ear too.

Bugger. I hope it's not the mineral foundation. I'm sure they've been there brewing for weeks actually. The ones on the right certainly have but they've been smaller and not painful. Thx for the thoughts.

Lumene · 24/02/2019 11:40

I ordered the Dr Sam SPF yesterday, will let you know how I get on.

botemp · 24/02/2019 11:46

Thanks for that Lumene will be curious to hear what it's like.

Pupsie, I did get a sample of JI mineral makeup a long time ago, it did feel quite heavy to me, as in, it needed a really good cleanse to get off, but you double cleanse anyhow, right?

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 24/02/2019 14:07

Thanks Ruggy I’ll look into jaw line fillers. Still going to give the nuface a few more months so I’ve got time to research and think over. I can definitely ‘feel’ the nuface if I don’t put enough gel on, especially on my forehead. I caught it on the end of my nose one time and certainly felt that Shock

Pupsie I’d be inclined to ditch all the new things and once the spots have hopefully gone then introduce them back in one at a time to find the culprit, maybe starting with the JI as you’ve not used it before.

I’d be interested in a review too Lumene it definitely seemed to leave a white cast on dr Sam in her vid but as she’s very pale anyway it wasn’t too noticeable under her makeup, I think it likely would be on me as I’ve had that issue before.

JDSTER · 24/02/2019 14:21

Back from a week in the sun. LRP anthelios dry touch facial sunscreen served me well. I took GOW Vit C with me, first time trialling it, and I like it. It absorbs very quickly to quite a matte finish. I used that underneath SPF.

I just heard about the Dr Sam SPF. It sounds good but fairly pricey and I still love Biore brightening milk for daily use and LRP in more direct sun. I was catching up with a couple of her videos today. The skin after menopause one was good and the ones she’s just done -Q&A -on sunscreen. Things I already know about facial care in the sun but a good reminder none the less.

princess I’ll start using the NuFace more regularly now. I suppose I have the 90 day return available to me if I don’t see a difference after the 60 days they ask you to trial it for.

Pupsiecola · 24/02/2019 15:19

Thanks guys. I think it probably is the JI. Nothing else new apart from the Aldi detergent, and I usually get skin problems on my hips when it's that. Bo do you reckon I should therefore avoid all mineral powders? First time I've used one and I really liked being able to just dab it on where it's needed.
