Bellsandwhistle · 26/12/2018 21:02

So after Liberty and M and S advent calanders plus a few presents I’m gonna attempt a no beauty spend 2019. Will eventually need deodorant and shampoo I guess but will see how far I can get before spending....

I finished a Lipstick, years since I did that I think. Have loads more so not replacing in the next five years. Counted the bars of soap yesterday and have 30 bars - why would I have 30 bars of soap, when one bar lasts for ages? I may count the number of liquid soap when I feel strong enough.

ElspethFlashman · 10/04/2019 10:38

Well done everyone on your restraint. It's so hard but worth it!

I had a shit load of old empties from MAC, many years old. When you return 6 empties you get a free lipstick, that's why I kept it all.

Yesterday I decided to get rid. I claimed 2 free lipsticks, but decided one would be a present for a friend and the other would be for me but in return I was exchanging one that was too pale for me. So one out, one in. And friend is flipping delighted.

So no actual reduction in lipstick numbers but at least I replaced with one that suits me better, and didn't spend anything extra in doing so.

Meanwhile I'm working steadily on another lipstick which only has about 2 cm left, so hopefully will get that done before summer.

FiveShelties · 10/04/2019 10:41

I wonder how long a lipstick would last if you used the same one everyday?

ElspethFlashman · 10/04/2019 11:15

I still think it'd be about 6 months or more. When I used to watch Project 10 Pan videos on YouTube, they always said that they forced themselves to reapply at lunchtime if not more, and that's how you really get it done in on average a 3 month time frame. And they were usually not new lipsticks even then.

I'm only doing one swipe a day as I don't have time to be reapplying at work tbh and I'm finding it's taking its time. But I am at least only using that one lipstick, and in fairness it has gone down a good bit since Christmas.

FiveShelties · 10/04/2019 11:31

I think you are right Elspeth, I thought around 6 months too - I have many, many years of lipsticks leftGrin

LHMB · 10/04/2019 13:21

Me too, oh my goodness I have too many lipsticks, and several that don't suit me (received in gift sets, makeup advent calendars etc). Might have to chuck some or see if friends would like them (the unused ones of course).
Also have several eyeshadow palettes with shades I will probably never use as wouldn't suit me, so may just have to chuck when I've used up the shades I do use

ElspethFlashman · 11/04/2019 09:20

You could always depot the shades you do use. I did that a few times over the years. There's always a slight risk of breakage but if you look at a couple of videos first you should be alright.

You have to melt the glue well underneath with a candle/lighter (do this outside cos it will smell like melting plastic) and then pry up carefully with a butter knife. Then you just need some blu tack and any old small tin to put them in. It is very satisfying.

tinyradish · 11/04/2019 11:26

Lipsticks are my main problem too - although i haven't actually bought any for a long time but always used to be on the hunt for the 'perfect' shade which resulted in a ridiculous amount used maybe once or twice that have been sitting around ever since.

More empties though!

  • A Burts Bees lip balm (wont replace as I have many lip balms)
  • Palmers stretch mark cocoa butter which I've used throughout pregnancy (wont replace, have many other body butters/lotions.)
-clear brow gel (wont replace, don't need.)
Peridot1 · 11/04/2019 13:18

FiveShelties - I counted up my soaps this morning - 27! I thought it was more to be honest. Might need to start showering three times a day to use them up!

LHMB · 11/04/2019 13:27

That's a good idea Elspeth.
Finished a body mist

LHMB · 12/04/2019 11:55

Finished another body butter

Sarcelle · 12/04/2019 16:47

You lot are doing so well using stuff up.

Peridot1 · 15/04/2019 13:43

Finished a mini shampoo and conditioner and a full size conditioner over the weekend.

Also found an almost empty Bobbi Brown BB cream so junked that. It’s at least three years old I think.

ElspethFlashman · 15/04/2019 15:29

I fi ished a hair serum, and had no back ups. I think I need to replace it, I look like the Lion King!

Have also decided to dump an eyeshadow. Its Satin Taupe by Mac and truth be told its always leaned too dark on me but I think I kept hanging on to it because it was so popular. Well I've been using it for the last 3 weeks solidly and I'm sick of blending blending blending. It's just a dark smudge on me, regardless of how pretty it is in the pan. What's the point? I've lost patience with hyped products that are actually fairly shit underneath it all.

FiveShelties · 16/04/2019 01:36

I finished a small moisturiser, Isis from M & S. I think they changed the name of this range to Aqua about three years ago - have no idea how long I had had it. Absolutely no need to buy another body lotion, spoilt for choice in the 'stash'.

Peridot1 - good luck with the soap - hope you do not have a water meterGrin

LHMB · 16/04/2019 11:04

Finished a hair serum

Bellsandwhistle · 16/04/2019 12:21

Binned a travel size mascara as got a good couple of months out of it and decided to move on. I find mascara hard to Bon as it’s never actually all used up just gets a bit less effective gradually.
Also used a travel sized cleanser up which was fairly rubbish. Cut an eye cream open so now on 2 days dregs.
Lipstick I’ve been using same Vb one for about 4 months twice a day and finally down to using a lip brush to finish. Still reckon a few weeks left though. I hate waste which is actually quite ironic when you look at the massive stash I have and how the products are sort of being wasted by sitting there while I’ve clearly bought more.

Yes the cutting up of tubes is v v v satisfying. Especially as you use them up much faster thereafter as you somehow scoop out loads with your finger. I'm down to the dregs on a hand cream (hallelujah) and another disappointing Ordinary product (I don't even remember it's name it's so underwhelming)

Also ended up throwing out 4 eyeshadows in my purge yesterday. This process has really made me focus on a) what suits me and b) what I actually use in reality. I simply do not do a smokey eye any more. I used to, in my pubs 'n clubs days. And so I kept all these smokey shadows out of habit. GONE!!!

I'm keeping a black liquid eyeliner for emergency socialising instead.

woodhill · 16/04/2019 14:19

Yes I love cutting tubes and did use an elasticiser up. I don't like the pump dispenser's as much

Peridot1 · 16/04/2019 16:55

I finished up a full size pot of Elemis cleansing balm last night which was very satisfying.

And junked the last bit of a No 7 foundation. It smelt a bit funny so think it’s past it’s best.

I did buy a moisturiser though. A L’Oreal one with SPF 30. I bought a Simple one a couple of weeks ago but ended up having to take it off as it stung my eyes even though I hadn’t out it on my eyes. I’ll use it on my décolleté area and neck. Hope the new one doesn’t sting. I basically want o be able to get up and wash my face and put on one product with decent spf to go out for walks first thing. When it’s really sunny I use fact 50 sunscreen but don’t need that normally but still want a good spf. But not burning the eyes off my face!

ElspethFlashman · 21/04/2019 17:57

Fuck fuck Fuckity fuck.

Bought a foundation. Blush

Definitely influenced by a few people. Have been shoving it to the back of my mind since January and..... cracked. Only a tenner, but that's not the point.

I think I'll throw out the half bottle of Rimmel I've been working on. It's not great for a sweaty days work. And at least I'll still only have 3 foundations rather than accumulating a fourth. I suspect the one I bought will be a lot longer lasting.

Also bought a lip balm. I don't feel massively bad about that as I have one that is about 8 years old that I should have dumped anyway. The one I bought, the Nuxe one, is my all time fave.

Also bought a powder to replace my Charlotte Tilbury which lasted all of a month. Do NOT recommend!

LHMB · 21/04/2019 18:47

Finished a foundation

Bellsandwhistle · 21/04/2019 22:24

Anyone else think Charlotte tilbury stuff overstayed? I got a blusher for Christmas and without being dropped it all broke up. Was also tricky to use as dark middle and lighter outside but you couldn’t really miss getting dark on brush which made for a stripy look unless blended to within
an inch of its life then too dark?!

Bellsandwhistle · 21/04/2019 22:26

I’ve a powder I think it’s sally Hansen airtastic that’s been going about 6 months now and still going. Good value but I’ve one or two others in stash so will eventually replace when all others used up. Used to love corn silk till discontinued.
