Thanks Mrs8 - I’ll check those out.

UnnecessaryFennel · 12/01/2019 09:38

Yes, Cinnabar is gorgeous - a colleague wears it and she always smells fabulous.

That's interesting about Hippie Rose Judy; it lasted ages on me. I would be tempted by Cardinal but I have CdG Avignon and they are too similar (imo) to justify the Heeley price tag. What's Sel Marin like?

ComingtoKent · 12/01/2019 09:38

And thanks to Calmandance - I’ll be busy in the department stores and duty free shops this spring!

Bluesheep8 · 12/01/2019 10:14

Thank you for the feedback on cinnabar, going into town now to investigate

SOTD is PG Aomassai. This is an odd one but I rather like it. A big blast of coffee, caramel, hazelnuts and - weirdly - celery seed up top, which dries into a bittersweet resinous wood. It's a gourmand, I suppose, but definitely no candyfloss here. It's actually pretty addictive.

MrsLucas · 12/01/2019 10:58

That sounds interesting Fennel. Have you tried SL Le Participe Passe? Looks on paper as though there might be some common ground?

Inspired by Calm's elephant experience yesterday, I'm in PP Santal Blush.

MrsLucas · 12/01/2019 14:46

Are we a quiche? Judy and I were on a thread that made me wonder....?

KaliforniaDreamz · 12/01/2019 15:08

I think a quiche would be exclusive and you lot have welcomed me in.

I’ve not used any perfume in years. 😊 I last had Rock n Rose. It’s now discontinued. Can anyone recommend something similar?

auberginesrus · 12/01/2019 15:59

Pfft, definitely not a quiche! I think sometimes these long running threads can seem a bit like that but as soon as I started reading this one I could see it wasn't.

Paul Smith Rose is lovely - smells like a garden rose

I found this thread courtesy of Judystilldreamsofhorses Grin

I'm hoping to get some advice for perfume picking. Having reached the age of 50, I still haven't found the right one.

Admittedly, I don't often wear perfume, but some of that may be down to not finding one for me. DD bought me some Chloe a couple of years ago, and I'm currently using Sexy Ruby by Michael Kors (Xmas present from DD). It's not bad but not quite me.

DD reckons I suit musky stuff. I used to go for florals, but I've wondered if the menopause changes the way your skin reacts to perfume. I recall my late mum was using heavier perfumes from her 40s, she did like Poison.

I have fond memories of Laura Ashley No 1 from many years ago, before they discontinued it. I sampled the revival but I've gone right off it. I also had Chanel No 5 about 10 years ago. Gone off that one, too.

Any ideas gratefully received. I've seen names on shop shelves, but have no idea where to start.

MrsLucas · 12/01/2019 21:39

Well that's a relief, although a quiche sounded a bit more palatable than a clique. Smile

I would add to Mrsr8s vintage Avon hit list:

  • Elegance (fabulous vintage deep floral chypre (oakmoss, rose, violet, vetiver, cinnamon - dates from 50s).
  • Elusive (wildly animalic 60s spicy chypre - civet, musk, oakmoss, galbanum, cloves, coriander, incense).
  • Bird of Paradise (60s gently smokey, woody oriental),
  • Persian Woods (harder to find, 50s woody oriental. Sandalwood, moss and amber).

Most of these pop up regularly on eBay for pennies (kitsch bottles a bonus) January is the right month to discuss!

MrsLucas · 12/01/2019 22:03

Welcome Mop! Standard advice here is to sniff loads of stuff and hide your credit card. The Perfume Society sell boxes with lots of different perfume samples pretty cheaply (and there is currently a sale on - some boxes are £12 and have 10 or so different samples). They also provide good lists of notes, so even if the 'one' isn't there, this may help you narrow down the search.

If you're feeling playful, lots of us also like the quirky London-based perfumers, 4160 Tuesdays, who sell sets of samples (you can pick which ones), and they also offer 9ml bottles if you don't want to make one big purchase they also have a sale coming up.

Looks like Laura Ashley No.1 was a floral, with a big hyacinth note? It is possible that you might like Jacomo Silences, although that's quite a fresh green sort of floral (perfume critic Luca Turin describes its opening stage as smelling like cut stems. Good for spring!)?

Am sure other people here will have great ideas. Smile

CountFosco · 12/01/2019 22:47

Hello all, been busy with work since the new year (starting with a night shift on the 2nd and working all last weekend). No makeup allowed so no perfume either.

SotD MH Vetiver Insolent. Spicy greenery. Heaven.

Saw a friend this evening who was wearing Le Labo Tonka 25. It was divine. I need it.

Lotsofpots · 12/01/2019 22:55

Speaking of which, anyone tried any of the PP Le Labo dupes?
