I think one of the most distressing things about Brexit is that it has given a voice to all the closet racists who now feel that ‘othering’ is legitimate. Don’t let the turkeys get you down.

SoyYo · 20/12/2018 21:01

Bless you @cherries you’re totally right of course. And I am tired with all the work/Xmas prep. I should ignore it but I do see an awful lot of it in FB. Maybe I should stay away from it for a little while...

ilovecherries · 20/12/2018 21:05

I have defriended about 40% of my FB friends (and my friends are all people I know!) on the basis of their Brexit comments. I’m ashamed when I go to mainland Europe at the moment. And I want to cry every time I see the EU flag.

neveradullmoment99 · 20/12/2018 21:09

Oh @soyo... Ive never had any toxic shit like that before. As @cherries said, ignore those turkeys. [ Maybe consider moving to Scotland?]

neveradullmoment99 · 20/12/2018 21:11

I don't do facebook. Maybe that's the thing.

neveradullmoment99 · 20/12/2018 21:12

I cannot believe that people are so racist and bigoted!!! :(

SoyYo · 20/12/2018 21:13

@never you know I’m married to a Scot and my FIL are all up there, if we could i would as I know how welcoming your compatriots are.
I can work from anywhere in the EU as long as I’m close to one of my employer offices, unfortunately none in Bonny Scotland.
Thanks for the kind comment Flowers you don’t know me personally but I do feel partly British having spent most of my life here so it really is upsetting sometimes...

neveradullmoment99 · 20/12/2018 21:20

You are British of course :) Don't let anyone make you feel any different.
I feel upset for you.
My family were immigrants from Italy.
Its such a shame. I know your family come from Scotland and is why I suggested it :)

dontcallmelen · 20/12/2018 21:21

Soy so sorry you have a horrible day, yy don’t let the turkeys get you down.

neveradullmoment99 · 20/12/2018 21:23

Brexit is a disaster. I really don't know how we are going to get through this. Wtf were people thinking of.

neveradullmoment99 · 20/12/2018 21:25

Are people like this to you in real life? Or are they cowards saying these things hiding behind their computer screens?

neveradullmoment99 · 20/12/2018 21:30

...and I was listening to a report that actually employers are very worried that there will be a lack of people in the UK to fill various posts after Brexit. I think that is more likely to be the reality.

Laska2Meryls · 20/12/2018 21:31

Disgusting Soy ... Sadly ( and I really do mean sadly). I come from along line of English ( has been traced back to 16c at least)..Family myth on DMs side had it that there had been some Irish and French in the mix , but sadly not it seems) DH it turns out is similarly English except a possible un-verified 17c Huguenot trace

I am utterly ashamed of my country and of many of my compatriots..and getting more so as Fuxit continues..

If i could get a passport for anywhere else i definitely would..

PorpoisefullyObtuse · 20/12/2018 21:32

I’m so sorry you’ve been upset SoyYo. I hate Brexit. I hate how divisive it is. I hate that it seems to give carte blanche to casual racism. I still can’t believe it’s happening.

I am rarely proud of the politics in my wee corner of the UK (NI) but we voted remain and I was proud of us then. Don’t get me started on the monster raving DUP and how they are failing to represent the views of majority of NI citizens.

neveradullmoment99 · 20/12/2018 21:33

IMO, the tories have bread this culture of immigrant hatred. Of people on benefit hatred...[Don't get me started]

neveradullmoment99 · 20/12/2018 21:34

I voted to remain [ Most of Scotland did]

PorpoisefullyObtuse · 20/12/2018 21:40

Any chance London, Scotland and NI could form a new country?

twosoups1972 · 20/12/2018 21:42

Agreed never But what I don’t understand is - people who are strongly for Brexit - why? What are the advantages?? Just to control immigration or something else?

Laska2Meryls · 20/12/2018 21:43

Dfs today, I wore what has become a bit of HushUniform for me this season.. Navy Ivy ( I have black, red and green) with L/L T under .. And dyed blue leopard leggings (they were M&S true and if you remember i have the grey and another pair dyed burgundy) . Hultquist star necklace, and this time my new lush black Celt wilderness bootsthat DH bought me

Sad today we have started sorting out DMs clothes and took lots to the charity shop.. I had to remind DF that it wasnt her, just her clothes.. but grim all the same ..

F**k its hard.. All I can say to you is Do all appreciate your DMs this Christmas if you can..

I have started ANOTHER BLEEDIN' EFFIN COLD!! ( What?.. was perfectly OK this morning .., but this evening nose is like a ruddy tap and one sinus blocked..

Have just had hot whisky/lemon/ ginger /honey toddy though (nice. I could go for these!) and now will have early bed.. I was up 5.30 making mince pies to take to DF and DB as I realised that they wouldn't have any h/m ones this year if i didn't do some for them Sad )

SoyYo · 20/12/2018 21:46

Aw thank you thank you thank you Flowers
It’s funny none of this ever happened to me before this awful Brexit vote. Think about it I came here waaay back in 1980 as a teen student, then stayed on to do A levels and college at quite a lot of expense to my family. My reasons for staying were basically DH so I didn’t even come here to stay initially and my family weren’t thrilled at my decision to start with. I would have been much much better off financially going back home, had a better living standard.
But what I loved about Britain (aside DH) was the freedom this society represented, I come from quite a socially restrictive background and very conforming at the time. It was such an exciting time for me to see all the different tribes, groups in the UK. Always felt welcome and appreciated.
Some of my closest friends go back to those early 80’s and they’re also appalled at recent events. It’s a minority I know who feel validated by the vote to spout hate.
I have had just once instance in a supermarket queue where someone was unpleasant based on my (faint) foreign accent but DH (6’3” 100% Viking Scot appeared) and that was the end of that little unpleasant incident...I’m really too fierce for people to dare tackle me so the unpleasantness is limited to keyboard warriors.
Oh well. It’s sad but I know it doesn’t represent more than a tiny minority of my British compatriots because yes I am British too 💪

neveradullmoment99 · 20/12/2018 21:48

I love your boots @Laska.
How horrible for you, sorting out all the clothes. So hard. My DM was back at the hospital for a check up with the oncologist. She has had some discharge from both her nipples :( They don't think its anything to worry about but are going to scan her other breast in March. Here we go again...

neveradullmoment99 · 20/12/2018 21:51

@soyo. Always keep in mind it is the minority Flowers

neveradullmoment99 · 20/12/2018 21:53

Mr Laska has good taste Grin

neveradullmoment99 · 20/12/2018 21:55

Its the wee things when someone dies that get to you @Laska Flowers They jump up and smack you right in the face.

dontcallmelen · 20/12/2018 21:57

This fecking government & most of the media have a lot to answer for they have for years completely & utterly criminally underfunded the infrastructure of the U.K & encouged immigration to work mainly in poorly paid industry so the Tory mates became richer & richer, yet these people are demonised & blamed.
Whilst the homeless are dying in record number on the streets, millions reliant on foobanks, the ill & the vulnerable are made to jump through impossible hoops to claim what they are rightfully entitled too, in the name of austerity & ideology.
They sit there in the ivory towers of parliament & not one single one off them is willing to put this country first, still to busy infighting.
I don’t understand why they won’t admit it’s all a farce & at least let people have another vote.
