Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Most of us had long since stopped using it, partially due to the inconsistency of formulations and the worrying behaviour of the CEO on Social Media.

Since that compilation, other brands like the Inkey, Revolution Skincare, QRXLabs, and Alex Steinherr x Primark have launched with similar products/concepts.

From the limited experience on here, the Vitamin C 23% and Azelaic Acid from Garden of Wisdom (at Victoria’s Health) is well liked and much preferred over TO versions.

OCTOBER 2018: In other news, we’re two years old this month! We’re so old- Drunk Elephant is finally available in the UK, but all this celebration is probably overshadowed by the fear that our beloved LRP Toleriane Fluide may have been discontinued Sad

Lancome has numbers instead of names, I think.
That's a beautiful nude, I am looking at Lolita and it's similar, a bit darker I guess.

SallieSallow · 04/11/2018 14:42

That was an interesting article Bo and I do hope BT is now getting the help he needs seeing as it mentioned psychiatric treatment in the U.K. and Canada.

I wish CEOs and brands in general would stick to using to social media to discuss their actual products and not ‘issues’ of any kind, and I’d prefer they didn’t go down the route of blogger/vlogger ‘matey’ type chat with their customers but I think that’s what the younger generation who have grown up with YouTube etc expect now so I doubt we’ll escape from that.

I remember using lipcote back in the day Tant, I didn’t realise it was still around. These days I find long lasting lipsticks make my lips horrendously dry and feel very uncomfortable so I stick to glosses or balm stains and just re-apply, though some of the balm stains are pretty long lasting - the ‘balmy’ bit wears off but the colour stays on.

TantricTwist · 04/11/2018 15:34

Sallie Yes the long lasting lipsticks just dehydrate your lips to the point of an forgotten old raisin in bottom of your bag kind of thing.

I used to use Lipcote as a Teen so when I saw it the other day in Primark looking for halloween make up for my DD I couldn't resist and I'm glad I bought it now actually.

BabyP the number has long wiped off. The Lolita looks like a good colour though although I'd have to try it on in my local Debenhams.

SallieSallow · 04/11/2018 18:02

Oh I’ll have a look in primark thanks Tant

Just realised I sound like a right miserable old crone in my last post with all the back in the day and younger generation stuff, I’m still in my 40s believe it or not Grin

EnidButton · 04/11/2018 18:45

Loved using lipcote when I worked in a shop. My lipstick wouldn't have shifted if the apocalypse had hit.

I'm not a matte lipstick fan really. Too drying. Can see why people like it as it's easy to shape lips with it but after half an hour I'm desperate for some lip balm. Maybe I just haven't tried the right ones.

If it helps anyone worried about the hair curse, my hair is falling quite nicely now it's had a couple of weeks to settle. Isn't how I wanted it but it's a nice cut and looks good. So it's not as bad as I initially thought. The curse might be lifting.

SallieSallow · 04/11/2018 19:41

Thanks Enid that’s reassuring seeing as I’m up next for the chop....Grin

EnidButton · 05/11/2018 00:18

I'm sure it'll go well Sallie Smile

My skin is very dry. Unusual behaviour. I don't ever get dry skin really. Dehydrated sometimes. Also have a few spots for the first time in ages.

I used a facial razor/brow shaper on Fri and the moisturiser stung afterwards. The original toleriane fluide was fine going on straight away. Also had a lot of sugary things at a party. So think it's a combination of those things plus having the heating on again.

Not sure how to remedy it as it's a new thing so going with another layer of moisturiser, cicaplast 👑, and tomorrow I'll eat some good skin food like salmon and an avocado. Avoiding sugar again now. thrush too ffs

Pupsiecola · 05/11/2018 07:36

A helpful assistant in M&S made me a small sample pot of the Emma Hardie mask. I used it last night. It stung pretty badly when I put it on, for about 2-3 minutes but the settled. My skin felt really good afterwards, and feels good today too. I've got enough for one more application next week but I'll probably buy it afterwards.

Does anyone use the banking app/account Monzo? I've got it following the recommendations of 2 friends. You can have your salary paid into it but we just use it for spending money/budgeting. I'm loving it.

EnidButton · 05/11/2018 08:56

I'll have a look at that app. Sounds really helpful. Thank you.

Pupsiecola · 05/11/2018 11:35

Thanks to those who recommended a sheet mask.

I'm very disappointed with the Lenny Deighton nail polishes. I bought a pale pink, and also the top coat mentioned here. They both peel dreadfully on me?! I put the clear on last night. This morning it was peeling off on pretty much all fingers. No idea why. Essie on the other hand: I put one coat of a pink on, no base or top coat, and it lasted 4 days!

botemp · 05/11/2018 13:10

Sallie, unfortunately, no, last I hear BT was goading Brits on his personal Instagram on how he picks up free HIV prevention meds on the NHS whenever he's in the UK...

WRT CEO's I have this issue with public people beyond CEOs as some seem to be incapable of understanding that if you have influence and a giant platform conduct needs to be aligned with that.

Pupsie stinging for 2-3 mins doesn't sound that great, I'd be wary of using it. Most of EH is full of essential oils, is that one too? Speaking of Primark and sheetmasks, the Alex Steinherr collection did have two interesting looking sheetmaks, I thought they were pricey (3 or 4 euros each) as I only ever buy them from Asia but they looked nice, one was a two step one.

Paula's choice BHA is making a HUGE difference to my skin - more so than any retinol or other acid I've ever used

mintmagnummm · 05/11/2018 13:55

Olli what difference is it making and when/how do you use it? I tried sample of it while back but I didn't think my skin liked it

Ollivander84 · 05/11/2018 14:05

PM, when I'm not using retinol. I have the 2% lotion. Sebaceous filaments on nose have cleared a lot and reduced my breakouts too

BabyPigeon83 · 05/11/2018 15:36

I'm also using the 2% BHA but in liquid form, at night because it's a bit sticky for daytime and I use 1% retinol with it and I didn't detect any issues.
For daytime I think the resist 2% BHA is more suited under make-up, it leaves no tackiness whatsoever. I think it's also a bit milder than the skin perfecting one.
www.paulaschoice.co.uk/resist-anti-aging-daily-pore-refining-treatment-bha-m7820.html?dwvar_m7820_size=fullsize&cgid=bha-salicylic-acid
My skin would be much worse without these 2. They are running 15% off all acne related products at the moment .

TantricTwist · 05/11/2018 16:31

Olli and BabyP PC 2% BHA has made a huge difference to my skin as well. I'm due to run out so will stick to my Pixi retinol tonic for now to see if it stays ok or gets worse again without it.

Enid all these spritz's I've bought from Superdrug are keeping my skin from being dehydrated, it was looking so dry before. My skin looks so much more plump (hydrated) I guess (cant think of another word)

Pupsie I use Nails inc gel one coat under the Leighton Denny Top coat on my toe nails and it doesnt come off even after swimming, being in the sea, wearing flip flops, it just grows out.

Your mask really shouldn't be stinging, I wouldnt be buying a full size if it is.

My eyes sting like a MoFo after I've been using Differin when I take make up off and apply moisturiser the next day. I don't put differin near my eyes and I use an eye cream first as a barrier.

Pupsiecola · 05/11/2018 18:21

Yeah. Points taken. I'm not going to but the mask.

mintmagnummm · 05/11/2018 18:27

Olli and whoever else uses the bha lotion do you put it on a cotton pad and apply all over face? Do you put moisturiser on after?

SallieSallow · 05/11/2018 19:24

I like PC BHA but I find it very drying, especially in winter, and I can’t use it in the same routine with retinol - even once a week with nights off in between the two.

Pupsie I always found Leighton Denny to be crap (used to buy from qvc when they sold it on there) Mind you I’ve not had great success with Essie either, the red gel one chipped/peeled on me almost immediately and left my nails very stained.

Bo that’s sad about BT, I wonder if he’s got any family or any actual friends outside of Deciem/the beauty industry. Though I guess there’s only so much they can do and might have tried to help as much as they can already.

TantricTwist · 05/11/2018 22:20

Mint yes I have the lotion BHA and just put it on a cotton wool pad and rub all over face.

I agree with Sallie that it's a bit drying over winter which is why I've cut down on it for now. I tend to only use it once a week tbh anyway.

TantricTwist · 05/11/2018 22:21

I have it in liquid form not lotion, sorry Mint

JDSTER · 05/11/2018 22:25

mint I apply BHA with cotton pad and just use around nose, chin, and forehead. Leave for a few minutes then apply moisturiser, unless I’m doing 50 shades of snail method which is cleanse face, dry then apply BHA and leave skin ‘naked’ for 30 mins then apply clay mask. Wash off then use an oil cleanser and massage in for a few minutes to loosen any debris from pores, rinse and then you’ll have baby soft skin that, temporarily at least, looks poreless.

I love all Essie and Leighton Denny topcoat (I’ve recommended them many times Grin)
Just like skincare I suppose, what works well for one doesn’t always work well for everyone.

EnidButton · 06/11/2018 18:32

My skin is pretty bad atm. Very congested, dry and dehydrated with some spots and lots of SF. My diet has been equally terrible so it's most likely that.

Rather than being sensible and patient I'm giving the snail method, ^ as described, a go but instead of cleansing first, I used a manual scrub. I'm so going to regret this is a few days.

I just feel rotten generally so the least my skin can do is behave.

TantricTwist · 06/11/2018 18:54

I'm going to do the snail method on Saturday when I can devote more time and will have 3 days of sweaty gunk to remove Grin

The M&S advent Calendar has already sold out online - I'm guessing they still have quite a few in the shops like last year or have they all gone now?

TantricTwist · 06/11/2018 19:05

Mean't to add

Sorry Enid to hear that, this weather does strange things to skin plus I keep thinking it's 9pm when it's only 5pm it's all very discombobulating Grin
