I also remember watching the Coronation

This is actually one of my very first memories. I was a small child, but I think it is what initially sparked my lifelong interest in British history.

Which eventually led me to go to university in the UK, where I met Prince Charles, who was also a student at the time, briefly at a party. I did say it was along time ago. Smile

My favourite wedding dress was Princess Grace and her bridesmaids

polyhymnia · 06/10/2018 19:06

seneca, you must have been at the same university at the same time as me - I also briefly met Prince Charles at a party. A long time ago indeed!

SenecaFalls · 06/10/2018 19:12

I wasn't at the same university as Charles. I was at a Scottish university. But I did get around (geographically that is).

missclimpson · 06/10/2018 19:17

Yes Princess Grace was beautiful. I think Kate's dress was influenced by it.

mathanxiety · 06/10/2018 19:20

I think Princess Margaret's dress was a stunner, and I wonder if Eugenie would look nice in something similar.

Clionba, what a lovely memory with your mum Smile

SenecaFalls · 06/10/2018 19:25

I was playing on YouTube this afternoon and came across a video of Sarah Chatto arriving at her wedding. That dress is really beautiful and looked especially lovely in motion. It remains one of my all time favorites.

frugalkitty · 06/10/2018 19:28

My favourite two wedding dresses are Princess Grace's (Kate's was just an imitation of it, nice but obviously a copycat), and Sarah Chatto's which is just beautiful. I'm looking forward to seeing Eugenie's and agree with other posters that it might have an autumnal theme (the wedding, not the dress). Also glad to see the boat neck back as I'm broad shouldered and a wide/slash/boat neck really suits my shape.

SenecaFalls · 06/10/2018 19:45

I didn't care for the skirt on Grace's dress. Also I agree that her dress may have inspired Kate's but Kate's was not a copycat. I do agree with others about the cups in the bodice, but that skirt was a work of art and engineering.

I have to say that I was actually flabbergasted and not in a good way on seeing Diana get out of her carriage on her wedding day. I dislike it today even more. But my style consciousness and taste were formed in the 1960s (mainly Audrey Hepburn and Givenchy sort of vibes) which is one reason I like Meghan's dress so much.

SenecaFalls · 06/10/2018 19:48

1960s Good style decade
1980s not so much

frugalkitty · 06/10/2018 20:17

I agree about the 80s, of all the royal wedding dresses Diana and Fergie's have probably dated the most.

Kate's was beautiful up close but I think it needed something to make the embroidery and detail stand out. Even at the exhibition it was very flat.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 06/10/2018 20:57

Sarah Chatto's and Mette Marit of Norway's dresses were quite similar, unadorned and white. They also had a bit of a medieval look.about them with the square necklines.

Jackietheduck · 06/10/2018 21:17

Maxima’s dress was beautiful. So very beautiful. I’m a bit blown away by it as I had not seen it before.

I liked Meghan’s dress too.

I admire the simplicity of both dresses.

Clionba · 06/10/2018 21:38

I've said it before, but I think Meghan was inspired by Princess Angela of Liechtenstein.

Moononthehill28 · 06/10/2018 21:42

I thought Fergues dress was really lovely and fitted her beautifully. Diana’s dress was awful. It swamped her beautiful figure and was shapeless and crumpled. Sarah Chattos dress absolutely gorgeous I was really disappointed with Kate’s dress. Thought the cups looked awful and found it too plain and lacking in interest. I didn’t think Mefhan’s dress fitted properly but liked the style.

Moononthehill28 · 06/10/2018 21:43

Fergie’s !

Clionba · 06/10/2018 21:44

Loved Mette Marit's dress, but that's the worst bridal bouquet I've ever seen.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 06/10/2018 21:53

I'm going to go against the grain and say that Diana's dress was perfect for her. It was classic princess bride and spawned thousands of imitations.
It was let down by the fabric & styling ; but it was an iconic dress

I generally prefer plainer styles, but I think that this dress worn by Princess Claire of Luxembourg is beautiful. Another bateau neck.

I was just looking through royal bride wedding dresses and was reminded of Beatrice's interesting outfit at Peter Phillips wedding.

I also think Zara's bridesmaid dress for Sarah Chatto's wedding suited her better than her own wedding dress did, sadly.

I wonder if bridal floral headdresses will ever make a come back - they were the thing in the 1980s

Paradyning · 06/10/2018 22:39

I loved that butterfly fascinator of Bea's.

Moononthehill28 · 06/10/2018 22:41

I absoutely loved Zara’s dress!

user1457017537 · 07/10/2018 02:28

Diana’s dress was so crumpled when she got out if the carriage but she was very beautiful on her wedding day!

Quantumblue · 07/10/2018 03:22

Sarah and Mette-Marit both had exquisite dresses. I loved M-m's trailing flowers.
