I think Meghan is incredibly restrained in her jewellery. I would quite frankly bedeck myself with all the diamonds I could get my hands on.

Me too! It will be interesting to see what she wears for her first state dinner. I suspect the Cartier tiara she wore at her wedding and a plain high necked dress so she doesn't need a necklace. However they often have to wear those sash things which are a bit costumey

Clionba · 30/08/2018 08:55

That denim dress she wore to the polo - that shape, but in silk. Scarlet, emerald green or cobalt blue. Fabulous necklace and earrings. I've seen her red carpet pics and really want her to glam up!

QueenOfTheAndals · 30/08/2018 08:55

I think minimalism is her signature look so she's never going to be dripping in diamonds! Will she and Harry attend state dinners? Not sure I've seen him at one, thought it was just William and Kate. Looking forward to Max and Wax visiting in October - her outfits will be epic!

Actually, what's the purpose of those sashes that are worn at state dinners? They always seem to ruin the line of the gowns!

OP posts:
Clionba · 30/08/2018 09:03

Well, she may well struggle with minimalism in that family. Queen Letizia always manages to make the sashes look good, but then again, she does that with most things. They're family orders aren't they? From old heraldic devices? Now wearing them would really test Meg's minimalism.

WipsGlitter · 30/08/2018 09:26

I think the sashes are some sort of honour from the Queen. I don't think Kate has been given one yet.

Oh I really don’t like her dress; too short, too sloppy, too bulky on top. If I had her figure I could do a lot better. Can’t remember if anyone has said whether or not she has a stylist or someone to help her out with her clothes choices?

thatone · 30/08/2018 13:16

MM has the strangest taste I think. When it all came out that she and Harry were an item I was sure that, due to her acting background, she would totally ace the dressing up aspects of her role and have real style and charisma.

But this has not been the case. I just heave a sigh of relief when she is dressed alright for an occasion but ATM she seems to be getting it really wrong.

The Wimbledon outfit was odd - wouldn't suit anyone, and yesterday's dress was dull and shapeless. She has made some good choices but these are outnumbered by the wrong ones which either don't fit properly, are not appropriate for the occasion, or just make her look uncomfortable.

I was actually thinking the other day that it must be so hard for her. She has left her home, family and probably most of her friends so I'm not sure how much support she is getting. However nice the dh or the ILs are, she has left everything that is familiar to her and she seems to be still finding her feet, understandably.

QueenOfTheAndals · 30/08/2018 14:21

I wasn't that keen on the trousers she wore to Wimbledon but most of the photos were from the waist up and I thought the striped shirt looked incredibly chic.

OP posts:
WipsGlitter · 30/08/2018 14:28

The trousers needed taken up.

On a side note why does Victoria Beckham wear hers flapping on the ground?? Reflects badly on her as a designer but assume image thinks it makes her look taller.

Jackietheduck · 30/08/2018 14:46

I thought she looked like a film star in The South of France when she went to Wimbledon. Incredibly chic outfit.

It just goes to show that the RF will always have critics. If people don’t like Meghan’s style, they can admire Kate’s and if they find Kate’s frumpy they can admire Meghans. No need for any sighs of relief 😀

QueenOfTheAndals · 30/08/2018 14:47

It's a very early-noughties look isn't it? VB seemed to single-handedly keep it going until the advent of Meghan!

OP posts:
BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 30/08/2018 17:52

I used to be a bit of a VB style watcher but over the past couple of years I have totally lost interest and don’t even bother to look at any articles on her anymore, I think her fashion clout has really diminished and much prefer royal style watching now.

mathanxiety · 30/08/2018 18:18

Love Harry's beard, and I think William should grow one. I suspect he would look very much like Edward VII and George V.

I don't think Meghan has left home, family, etc., to wander naively into a completely new world where she has trouble finding her feet.

She left home at 18 to go off to a very selective university in a completely different region, joined a very selective sorority there (Kappa Kappa Gamma, aka 'Visa Visa Mastercard'). There is some serious money and privilege in universities like Northwestern and in particular in a sorority like KKG, which is heavily identified with the upper middle class and the very well off. It was very unusual for a young woman of mixed race to be accepted in KKG - sororities tend to be racially segregated. You get into any sorority by fitting in in terms of personality and culture, and by conforming to dress codes and codes of personal appearance, but there is definitely a 'type' for each sorority, and MM clearly fit the KKG mould. So would many young women who went to all-girls high schools in Hollywood or any other UMC area.

She passed the foreign service exam and all the rounds of interviews necessary to work for the State Department and worked in the US Embassy in Buenos Aires for a while before deciding to take her chances acting, and she made it in that field too.

user1457017537 · 30/08/2018 19:06

I believe MM interned at the US Embassy in Buenes Aires as arranged by her Uncle. I doubt very much if it involved passing foreign service exams and rounds of interviews. She would have had to have security clearance though

Clionba · 30/08/2018 19:16

She didn't pass the foreign service exam.

This blog orderofsplendor.blogspot.com/?m=1
Did a really good explanation of all the different Royal family's orders but I can't find it on the website at the moment.

Paradyning · 30/08/2018 20:00

Oh look! Leti wore the dress too!

*@Clionba*Agree totally. Strong jewel colours would look stunning on her. I love the chic minimalist lines of most of her dresses but I think the navy/black/cream palette she prefers is too dull or she wears them too frequently. I know she’s not a dress up doll , but cmon if you look like that why waste it...( I mean that in a nice jokey way)

Clionba · 30/08/2018 20:22

Me too! She looks fantastic and could really have some amazing outfits! Maybe she will....

RosinaAlmaviva · 30/08/2018 22:07

dinosaurkisses: It looks like someone try to sex-up one of DoC’s coat dresses- it’s just a bit too short so it doesn’t look quite right.

Just exactly what I thought - it's a sexed-up coat-dress! Not my favourite look but I think it's fine for the occasion/time of year.

The sashes are associated with chivalric orders and have a long history: here's Louis XIV wearing one over his armour in 1701. Royal children used to wear them too.

Espadrilles: Jennifer Aniston was recently seen wearing them on set. I just charity shopped my last pair, because they didn't go with anything and I'm tired of the way the ties undo themselves every five minutes. I would definitely buy more but only slingbacks from now on.

thatone · 30/08/2018 22:36

That's interesting mathanxiety, about her background. She just doesn't appear at ease or relaxed - almost as though she's trying to hard. I spend far too much time thinking about this.

MissEliza · 30/08/2018 22:48

MM's choice of clothes depresses me. I know lots of people will disagree but I really think you need a bit of colour in that kind of role to stand out from the crowd. She looks like she wants to disappear. I also find her clothes rather shapeless.
