is a foot reader a real job that can earn a living Grin

QueenOfTheAndals · 25/09/2018 21:35

Meghan's on the Queen doc right now and she must have the whitest teeth in the royal family! She's very glam and shiny.

Some gorgeous 50s dresses on the Queen during her 1950s commonwealth tour. My grandparents attended a reception for her during that tour. My grandmother claims she saw her give Prince P a very dirty look as he was late to that reception!

I LOVE that navy dress she’s wearing ? Where’s that from I wonder?

QueenOfTheAndals · 25/09/2018 21:44

The one in the doc? I think it's the Roland Mouret she wore the evening before her wedding.

OP posts:
RainbowsArePretty · 25/09/2018 21:53

She looks fab I think

QueenOfTheAndals · 25/09/2018 21:54

Charles and Anne were left for SIX MONTHS while their parents toured the commonwealth Shock

MoorMummy · 25/09/2018 22:07

Yes Queen! Well probably out of my budget then.

BeaLola · 25/09/2018 23:38

I love the hair and make up and diamonds. Dress ok but I don't love it. Prefer the navy one in doc.

Re shoes _ envious of anyone who can walk in any sort of high heels but they are really high heels ! Also please tell me how one size larger helps - surely you would slop about in them .?

OlennasWimple · 26/09/2018 02:29

I know, Queen. It just wouldn't happen today (happily)

Bealola I don't know, it's a mystery. I've worn shoes that are too small for me (numb toes and blisters); shoes that are too big for me (clacky walking and blisters); and shoes that actually fit (fine, if tiring after long periods). I can't see the advantage in choosing too big shoes

VanillaSugary · 26/09/2018 06:57

@QueenOfTheAndals It gets worse .... google where Charles and Anne lived whilst Liz & Phil were gallivanting around Malta. No wonder she says they were the happiest days of her life Hmm

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/09/2018 07:24

Really @VanillaSugary? I thought the children lived with them in Malta!

What a fascinating programme. Meghan is a strong personality, she is articulate and intelligent and really presents well. Already a confident Royal.

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/09/2018 08:15

She came across as very confident and knowing what she wants, which is no bad thing. Anne was hilarious with her comments about selfies.

I wonder why William or Andrew and Edward weren't interviewed? Maybe they feature next week.

OP posts:
CurlyWurlyTwirly · 26/09/2018 08:19

No she didn’t take them to Malta. here

By modern standards, she was a pretty cold parent.
Great Queen; questionable mother. The Crown has been economical with the truth when showing her mothering skills.

That’s why Prince Charles was so close to the Queen Mother. She basically raised him.

Clionba · 26/09/2018 08:38

I agreed with Anne about the phones and ipads! Meghan had quite a prominent role in this programme. I wonder if others will feature more in part 2?
Echos of the Queen's coronation gown in her veil.

missclimpson · 26/09/2018 08:55

I am not sure that it is fair to judge the Queen's parenting by modern standards. It all seems very bizarre to us, but would have been pretty normal in upper class circles of the time. Think of all those people out in the Raj whose children were sent back to the UK and didn't see their parents for years at a time. I think the nannies inevitably provided the mother substitute.

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/09/2018 09:11

Lady Pamela from that DM article is India Hicks' mother isn't she? She occasionally features in India's Instagram and has the sort of upper-class accent that you don't really hear anymore. Listening to her is like going back in time 70 years!

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/09/2018 09:16

The Queen Mum and George VI used to leave their daughters to go on months-long tours too, and of course Prince Philip's parents were notoriously negligent (though his mother had MH issues so hardly her fault) so it's no surprise they thought nothing of leaving Charles and Anne behind while they lived it up in Malta.

OP posts:
missclimpson · 26/09/2018 09:37

Having read a lot of biographies of aristocratic and royal families I think it was pretty rare to see much of the children. Lots describe only seeing their parents for a short while each day at tea time or when the parents were dressed to go out. Nannies, tutors, governesses, boarding school was the pattern. Reading the AMA thread about the nanny to the rich on here it sounds as if nothing has changed in some circles.

MissLingoss · 26/09/2018 10:06

Charles and Anne were left for SIX MONTHS while their parents toured the commonwealth shock

That was one of the consequences of the King dying so young, which someone mentioned yesterday. It was a tour that was planned for him, but had to be cancelled due to his ill health. Then Elizabeth and Philip started out in his place, but had to come home when the King died. So this was the third attempt.

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/09/2018 10:58

When they showed the christening of the royal yacht, what really came across was the Queen's sadness. She looked like a young woman who missed her dad terribly.

Even a few years ago, when she passed Queen Victoria as the longest-reigning monarch, she kept it very low-key. I mean, the only reason she's reigned for so long is because he died so young. I'm sure she'd happily trade in a few less years on the throne for a few more years with him.

OP posts:
MissLingoss · 26/09/2018 11:09

Yes, they say she never marks the anniversary of her succession, because it's also the anniversary of her father's death.

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/09/2018 11:28

In what might be the most mundane royal spotting ever, a woman on Twitter claims she saw Meghan cleaning up after her dog!!

OP posts:
BlingLoving · 26/09/2018 12:07

I think the dog cleaning one was disputed - it's the wrong kind of dog apparently.

Personally, I think we'll have a couple of old monarchs then somehow things will "correct" and another young one will turn up. It seems to be the pattern in England. Maybe George lands up king early, or one of his children. Or somehow Charlotte becomes queen - we have a history of women monarchs who weren't "supposed" to be queen coming to the throne!
