Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

@botemp haha got it!

Pupsiecola · 12/06/2018 17:45

I haven't tried the SkinCeuticals Bo . I will look. Thank you. Funny as I used to really like the tinted Neostrata. But once I add some actives in my routine I found it a bit sort of irritating. Weird.

JDSTER · 12/06/2018 18:59

I hadn’t appreciated cosrx was Korean, or more correctly, I hadn’t registered it in my brain Confused.

I got the M&S summer beauty box today. A few nice things in there for £15. There’s an eos pink grapefruit lip balm that smells amazing. Lots of things I’ll use so a nice little treat.

Violet18 · 12/06/2018 21:17

@Bo I'd like to use my LRP Redermic-R eye cream every night (currently using 3 times per week on BHA nights), but was wondering about the overlapping of other actives on the edge of my eye contour where they meet. For example, I avoid using it if I'm using the retinol for the rest of my face as it's two retinols? Also I have been taking the PC skin balancing serum under my eyes, but I won't be doing this again after reading your fact sheet! So could I use the redermic-r under my eyes and PC (soon to be Medik8 3TR) on the rest of my face, even though they may overlap a bit near the eye contour? Any thoughts on the same issue but with niacinamide serum? Thanks!

TantricTwist · 12/06/2018 22:55

JDSTER It's great isn't it, the M&S summer box, that lip balm is gorgeous. I've pretty much used everything successfully so far.

mintmagnummm · 13/06/2018 09:43

Ok so second day using spf and am still liking it so far. It applies nicely and absorbs easily, make up goes on well over it and not greasy. I'll attach pic incase anyone else wants to try it....

🐌 Fantastic Skincare: In the Garden of Wisdom there is always room for Cicaplast ❤️
SheStoodInTheStorm · 13/06/2018 10:15

Just wanted to stop by and say hello (poster from early threads) loving that Cicaplast is in the title!

Quick question - I'm still using LRP toleriane fluide as my moisturiser but before I buy another just checking that's not been superseded by anything? It's fine, non-irritating and does the job but sometimes I wonder if I need a little more hydration.

JDSTER · 13/06/2018 12:11

I’m still using LRP toleriane fluide in the morning. I like it’s lightness and simplicity. In winter when I need more hydration I use hylauronic acid serum underneath.

SheStoodInTheStorm · 13/06/2018 12:17

Thank you Smile
I think I am going to repurchase it.

EnidButton · 13/06/2018 13:15

Footner watch: peeling started three days ago, I didn't soak last night but feet got wet in the shower (obviously) so it's still going. I think it will be finished in two days if I soak tonight and tomorrow. The first couple of times I used it, it took over a week to start even with soaking. Now it's done and dusted in a week.

Tsmummy08 · 13/06/2018 17:40

Enid I was just coming here to say the peeling has started after 4 days - do I have to soak my feet then?!

SallieSallow · 13/06/2018 18:26

Evening all Smile just got back after a couple of days working away and my hourglass stuff was waiting for me, I got the veil and the blusher, only tested so far over the 'old' makeup I've had on all day but I'm very impressed, just wish hourglass wasnt so expensive. They've sent me a decent sized sample of their veil primer too but don't think it will work that well with Frezyderm.

Also arrived is the cerave moisturiser from timeless, not tested yet as am finishing off a FAB one at the moment but was impressed with the speed of delivery from timeless I only ordered it Sunday.

Still waiting on the eyeko mascaras from QVC but once they've turned up that will be the last of my purchases and buying ban is now back in force.

Oh and I love LRP toleriane hydrating cleanser, it's my new Very Favourite Thing Grin

JDSTER · 13/06/2018 21:17

sallie likes LRP 👏
I’m going to get on and order the medik 8 crystal Retinal.

TantricTwist · 13/06/2018 21:56

Shestood. I'm still using Toleraine Fluide because its perfect for me.
However, when I need more hydration I use Clarins Lotus oil and recently from my M&S summer box I've been really enjoying using the Ultimate sleep Cream.

JDSTER · 13/06/2018 22:39

tant Good to hear you like ultimate sleep cream. I’m heading off to do my night time routine so I’ll give it a go Smile

SallieSallow · 13/06/2018 23:00

I'm quite tempted by the medic 8 retinol for eyes, it's fairly cheap too though a small size. Any reviews or thoughts?

EnidButton · 14/06/2018 00:16

TS four days is pretty good. You don't have to soak but it doubles the speed of the process and seems to give slightly better results ime. About 20-30 mins a day if poss. Remember no moisturiser or oils on your feet.

Nofilter · 14/06/2018 00:37

Hi Ladies,

My mums been using the La Roche Posay products this last few days and is interested for any suggestions on a routine for her..

She has combination skin with some age spots. She has lovely clear skin actually....

Is there a sheet for this skin type that suggests a routine that I could refer to?

Would she be ok using The Ordinary Squalane I bought but am not using myself until after I see my GP?

Thanks xx

botemp · 14/06/2018 09:11

Nofilter, as mentioned in the OP these threads focus on the educational aspect of skincare and isn't centred on products or 'set routines'. There simply isn't a one size fits all approach, otherwise we'd have nothing to chat about on here. The only reason the barrier compromise sheet has a suggested routine with products mentioned is because that's a very specific situation and unless it's specifically written out most in that situation will continue to compromise their barrier with aggressive product overuse which is generally the cause of the compromised barrier, consider it skincare rehab. It's strict and no one really likes it but it is for the better in the long term.

All of the above is why I don't put up any set routines or lists of recommended products, it could easily be done but all it would do is get a lot of people purchasing a lot of unnecessary products thinking they're good as they're mentioned here rather than putting in the graft themselves by doing research and interacting here to establish a routine that works for you specifically and be able to adapt with changing circumstances. Cold recs really don't work well on here, it may appear I give them out sometimes but that's usually to long standing posters who often share their routine at the end of the month so I have quite a good grasp of their issues and needs.

Welcome pickled and blue! I hope you've taken note of the brief melasma chat WRT mineral (physical) sunscreens. Especially if you're on prescription medications. As nice as the Frezyderm is, it's not one I'd be putting my faith in in those situations. I do hope you also have good wide brimmed hats with a high UPF rating as that's even more important than sunscreen when it comes to melasma. Dr. Sam mentioned some good ones, I'd have to look them up again, if interested.

WRT sunscreen first v last debate, I've addressed it on here before and I'm pretty sure it's in the sunscreen info sheets (but if it's not I'll have to add it). There's no research whatsoever about order, the reason it's generally recommended as last is because sunscreens form a film (hence why you always need to leave it to set), meaning any active ingredients have no chance of getting where they need to in the skin if there is a layer of SPF there. Also, that filter is compromised by touch so any rubbing on top disrupts the overall protection. Hence why you should always wait at least 10 minutes between applying makeup on top of your SPF. Skin should also have absorbed all preceding applied products so there's no compromise.

Violet, don't worry too much about an overlap. Just apply the eye cream first and it'll buffer anything on top in the overlapping perimeters.

Hello, Storm Smile I remember you as the Caroline Hirons victim. Yes, the Fluide is still going strong for many. Glad to hear it's still working for you too and have RP.

Sallie Grin I love that out of that enviable haul the simple LRP is your Very Favourite Thing. I haven't really looked into the Medik8 Retinol eye cream, must have been something that annoyed me about it as I am vaguely aware of it. They sometimes use essential oils (though non-irritating ones that are steam extracted), that may have been it.

Ooh I'm excited for you, JDSTER. Eh, who am I kidding I'm excited for me to know what the Medik8 Crystal is like Grin

No one is interested in my new spf 😩🙄😏🤣😜

mintmagnummm · 14/06/2018 11:19

Eyes playing up again today (not spf stinging but very watery etc) I'm wondering if it could be my eye drops (hycosan dual) or the Vichy eye m/up remover 🤔

mintmagnummm · 14/06/2018 11:21

Oh I'm liking the dhc so far, I prefer the feel of it to the ttdo and although there's no fragrance it has a pleasant smell rather than smelling like lard!

mintmagnummm · 14/06/2018 11:33

Bo is octocrylene (not sure on spelling) an ok spf ingredient?

PickledHoneybuzzard · 14/06/2018 12:23

Hi Bo, thanks for the welcome. I am diligent about a wide brimmed hat, particularly as we sail. The sunscreen has been a bit of a journey of discovery, I currently use the freezyderm if I'm indoors and top it with Biore aqua rich watery essence if I'm outside or ultrasun 50 for gardening/sailing/open top car.
I'm still looking for a good physical sunscreen for an olive complexion. I've been looking at the Altruist on Amazon.
I saw your sheet on sunscreen after I posted, sorry!, and it does cover the first or last question, thankyou.
I use a couple of Beauty Pie products so if anyone is interested in INCI or general opinions let me know.
Mint, I've made a note of your sunscreen

botemp · 14/06/2018 12:35

Thanks for confirming it's on there Pickled, saves me from checking and adding it if it was missing.

Have you tried the Skinceuticals tinted sheer mineral defense? Supposedly it's pretty good for most skin tones up to the medium spectrum. Otherwise, Bioderma Nude Touch is pretty good colour wise, it's not so great for fair or light skin but good for Olive skin. Only really good for combo-oily though.

These are the Dr. Sam recced sunhats btw, globalbabe.com/

mint, look it up in the SPF info sheets, I know I've covered it in there.
