Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Also, pickled, though not an SPF on its own (and not to be treated as such) but the It Cosmetics CC cream is a good SPF50 mineral product with a very wide shade range, but you have to be quite conscientious about what you layer it over as some unstable chemical filters do get destabilised when physical filters are layered over them. I'm not sure on the Zinc oxide % in it though, I'd have to check, if it's just titanium dioxide it's not much of interest probably.

How do I find the spf info sheets??

mintmagnummm · 14/06/2018 13:26

Its ok I found it! Ok so I'm now concerned about my spf as it's on the "if concerned avoid" list!
Bo I'm really struggling with spf now, frezyderm affects my eyes, the avene anti ageing couldn't be used without moisturiser due to stinging, plus felt heavy and caused white streaking, didn't get on with lrp (dry touch was changed) and others greasy and caused spots, eucerin has octocrylene. Are there any others you can think of to try for me please?

mintmagnummm · 14/06/2018 13:56

Just seen that frezyderm contains octocrylene too!! So maybe it's that irritating my eyes as I said my eyes are bad again but didn't think it was my spf but maybe it is!! I need u bo

Bluebell9 · 14/06/2018 14:39

Thanks Bo, I had seen it and have ordered some new zinc oxide SPF. I've been using Frezyderm (and loving the finish it gave) but I have the titanium dioxide SPF I had been using at home so I will go back to using that.

SophieLion · 14/06/2018 16:04

Thanks Bo. Am v tempted by those hats. Not the cheapest (I constantly lose/ruin hats when they blow in the sea) but I like the idea that you can "Scrunch it up and throw it in your handbag" Grin

Mint, I have to be careful with eye make-up removers. I can't use Bioderma sensibo on my eyes as it really stings, for example. I've been using a L'Oreal one for years and it doesn't cause my problems. Perhaps that's your problem?

mintmagnummm · 14/06/2018 16:14

Maybe Sophie but my eyes are fine when I remove my mascara at the moment, surely if it was that it would sting on contact? Just seems weird that frezyderm has the exact same ingredient as one im using now and eyes are bad again.

mintmagnummm · 14/06/2018 16:15

Oh and a heads up for u, ultrasun are currently reformulating all of their spf products to be free from mineral oil, octocrylene, fragrance, and lots of other suspicious ingredients! They said by early 2019 it should all be completed

SophieLion · 14/06/2018 16:22

Ah just seen it Singapore dollars not US so it's a bit cheaper than I thought. It's €12 delivery to Greece. Might buy one.

SophieLion · 14/06/2018 16:23

I don't know Mint. Sorry. I thought you had mentioned in an earlier post that your eye make up remover might be irritating you so I was just saying that could be likely.

Violet18 · 14/06/2018 16:37

@Bo Many thanks for the reassurance Smile

I'm liking the GOW niacinamide, bit soon to tell if it's a keeper, but went on good. Couple of small spots were less red by the morning too.

My Rosette Ceramide Gel has arrived, can't wait to try it especially since I suspect the Face Theory relaxing night cream caused the said spots Hmm

botemp · 14/06/2018 16:46

Sophie, just make sure to measure your head before ordering. I thought I had a normal sized head but those hats are far too big for me. That and the possibility of being smacked with import duties and taxes (perhaps less of an issue in Greece? Or am I making some really unfair assumptions?) has put me off ordering so far.

The Rosette should certainly be less heavy than the face theory night cream, Violet, but the macadamia oil in it doesn't suit everyone either, so just keep an eye out.

PickledHoneybuzzard · 14/06/2018 17:03

Thanks for the suggestions Bo, going to look at the skinceuticals option. The hats look good but realistically too big for sailing or gardening, I use a Tilley Hat for those. Might invest in one for general wear although I've also seen some Australian hats that have high spf ratings, are a bit cheaper and less summer holiday looking.

mintmagnummm · 14/06/2018 17:08

Yes I did Sophie I am all over the place at moment lol and no idea what's going on (hormones!)

Bo did you see my message to you or are you choosing to ignore me? 😜

JDSTER · 14/06/2018 18:11

mint you’ve exhausted all options. May we recommend you one of those wide brimmed hats Grin

mintmagnummm · 14/06/2018 18:42

JDSTER 😂😂* * hats don't suit me so basically I'm screwed

mintmagnummm · 14/06/2018 18:43

I'm not having trouble with anything except poxy spf!

mintmagnummm · 14/06/2018 18:44

Still really like the azelaic acid, it's very comfortable on the skin unlike the BHA!

bonfireheart · 14/06/2018 18:45

mintmagnummm what brand are you using?

SophieLion · 14/06/2018 19:16

Sage words Bo. On the hat size, I have actually already measured my head and I think the 56cm circumference should be fine for me. On the import duties, I might take my chances!

Not you're not making unfair assumptions either Bo - but I do think you are starting to understand the Greeks Grin

mintmagnummm · 14/06/2018 20:19

Bonfire do you mean what brand of azelaic? If so it's garden of wisdom

SophieLion · 14/06/2018 20:22

Re your eyes Mint, if they are getting irritated etc so often and you can't pin it down to anything, do you think perhaps you might have something else like dry eyes (which can manifest itself as random stinging or watery eyes) or an untreated allergic reaction? Maybe you should get them checked out. Just a thought and could be entirely wrong

(And yes when eye make-up remover irritates my eyes it does so when I apply it)

Shop · 14/06/2018 20:48

Bo you asked about the boots acne clinic, it was very straightforward actually. I picked which treatment I wanted (skinoren) and answered a couple of questions. They asked about severeity and other medications I was on and that was it. Didn’t have to upload photos or anything. It took a day or so to be double checked and then I got an email confirming it was being dispatched.
I have heard that if you try and reorder or order something else as well it won’t let you but I’ve not tried to do either of those things so can’t say for sure.

The instructions they’d put on it weren’t great - apply twice a day - but I introduced it very slowly and it’s really sorted my mild but persistent acne. It’s slowly fading some red marks but had caused a few closed comedones I think as it’s a fairly thick base cream. Once I’ve finished my second tube i’ll start on the GOW azelaic as that is easier to get and much cheaper.

mintmagnummm · 14/06/2018 21:17

Sophie I have seen an optician regarding my eyes and they said I have dry eyes and a slight blocked tear duct. I have a heated eye mask and use hycosan dual 2x a day. I always have to have tissue on me when I'm out no matter what the weather as my eyes water all the time sometimes so bad I have tears streaming down my face!

bonfireheart · 14/06/2018 21:41

mintmagnummm thank you. Am currently using the one from the Ordinary but it makes my face itch.
