Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Hello! Long time reader briefly delurking to say that I tried the frenzyderm spf yesterday. I had really high hopes - still looking for The Spf that isn't too white, makes me look like an oil slick or breaks me out. I was so excited, beautiful texture, no oil slick etc. BUT! Sadly after about an hour of wearing it, with eyes streaming I could stand it no longer. I was out for the day, so had to grab some dreaded wipes. But my gosh, the relief! I started by removing everything around my eyes. But then caved and wiped my entire face and neck. My eyes were immediately better. Today I'm back to my usual (greasy looking) Altruist spf and eyes are fine. So - if you have sensitive eyes, might be best to trial this slowly at first! But I'm so grateful to this thread for all the info. Everything doesn't work for everybody I guess. Keen to hear your thoughts on your new spf, Mint. I'm convinced that a great spf that suits my oily skin with sensitive eyes prone to breakouts is out there! Just got to find it. Maybe once I've got that in place I'll be able to join in on the actives chat.

mintmagnummm · 11/06/2018 13:19

Oh no tutu I'm sorry frezyderm hurts your eyes too, it's strange how quite a few of us are finding this, I wonder what the ingredient is that could be the culprit.

Pupsiecola · 11/06/2018 15:24

Glad you like the B&B hair stuff mint.

Another one here with ? eye issues from Frezyderm.

JDSTER where do you buy your Biore from?

Tantric I'm so glad you like the Neostrata. I'm also tempted to try it again, now I've used LRP for a while, but I'm not going to risk it lol.

mintmagnummm · 11/06/2018 15:43

Oh no pupsie not you too!!

mintmagnummm · 11/06/2018 15:44

I can't wait to get my face cleansed later! Can't do it early as have to take my son swimming but as soon as I'm back I'm going straight to the bathroom! Had sunglasses on all day today even inside! Eyes are awful!

TantricTwist · 11/06/2018 16:11

My eyes did sting a bit after applying frezyderm this morning but it was fine after 5-10 mins or so.

I went too close around my eyes, I have lots of other SPF so I will use those instead around my eyes if I remember.

JDSTER · 11/06/2018 17:05

tutu I also have oily skin and love Biore bright milk SPF (photo a couple of pages back). Doesn’t bother my eyes and I must say, as a rule I don’t have sensitive eyes. pupsie I get it on eBay from Japanese sellers. Takes a while to arrive but I always have one in reserve and I just order new one as I finish one.

EnidButton · 11/06/2018 18:10

Is the warm weather (UK) making everyone else's skin oilier? That's a thing right? Just curious really.

mintmagnummm · 11/06/2018 18:29

Enid YES!!!

Nofilter · 11/06/2018 19:28

Hi ladies,

Frezyderm thumbs up here. It hurts my eyes if I have it left on my hand and touch them but if I use it well clear of them I’m not having any problems and spent 1hr sweating on the park with DD. I was careful not to wipe my eyes when wiping my brow though!

Can I ask a question please? With the new regime, what do you actually use to wash your face, say in he shower?

I’m using Cleanser, Thermal Water, Frezyderm, Moisturiser.

TIA!

X

mintmagnummm · 11/06/2018 19:36

Notifier I'm glad your getting on well with frezyderm. I just wanted to say that your moisturiser shouldn't be going on after the frezyderm, spf is always the last step. If you feel your skin needs a moisturiser in addition to the frezyderm then you need to apply moisturiser first, let it absorb and then apply the spf Grin

mintmagnummm · 11/06/2018 19:37

Oh and just to add that not many of us here actually wash our face in the shower (some do) but for most our faces are done after a shower at the sink as the shower water tends to be too hot for face

Nofilter · 11/06/2018 19:46

Thanks Mint ah I had assumed Frezyderm to be used like a primer after everything, I’ll switch that round then...

I was wondering if there was a really nourishing treatment I could do to start me off as the above products are a great routine to pace over 6-8 weeks but I’ve really let it get dull and dehydrated...

Would a vitamin C mask be a nice thing for my type of skin do you know?

JDSTER · 11/06/2018 19:50

mint bang on with the advice about shower water too hot nofilter. Ideally water should be lukewarm only. Think of your skin as a delicate cashmere jumper that you wouldn’t subject to hot water Wink. You can use any wash off cleanser. No need for balm type or oil that removes makeup, keep that for evenings.

Enid I’m definitely oilier in summer.

Nofilter · 11/06/2018 19:52

Thanks JD. I have an Aesop Facial cleanser which is a soap I shall continue to use in that case I think ;-)

Nofilter · 11/06/2018 19:56

Oops I just noticed your reply one page 2 bo. I’ll stivk with Luke warm water for a wash and the set of products from the broken skin barrier page I have purchased.

Bit of a random question but how do you know if something suits your skin? Or is it more that you can feel it if it doesn’t?

Nofilter · 11/06/2018 20:06

Delicate cashmere jumper - right got it! mint haha - xx

Ollivander84 · 11/06/2018 20:14

Just had a finished image back from the shoot. This was after 6hrs shooting so my hair is slightly ruined!

botemp · 11/06/2018 20:31

Don't use soap on your face Nofilter, it's skincare sin number one. The pH is far too high and compromises the skin barrier further.

Vitamin C is another active that's off the table. You really need to leave it all alone until you've spoken to a dermatologist/GP. They'll probably be far more stringent with the amount of products you're 'allowed' to use than I am.

Something that suits your skin is something that doesn't irritate but some people can be a bit oblivious to irritation. I suspect you may be one of those people though, so look out for redness, it can be immediate or it can build gradually. Anything immediate like stinging or burning should be pretty self-explanatory.

JDSTER, I thought I'd drawn attention the new Medik8 Crystal (how suiting, I think I'd prefer receiving that over those flutes, sorry tant I 'accidentally' dropped them Blush) but something came up and I never got round to it. Nadine Baggott did mention it as well at some point somewhere on a video and she did get comparable issues to when she was using tretinoin but not as bad, so it's definitely potent and I suppose in that sense also a good way to explore whether the full strength stuff would be tolerable for you. It definitely has promise and if my skin could tolerate it (I'm assuming not) I'd definitely be choosing it over retinol. Initially I had looked into it as it's more affordable than the R-Retinoate but I'll have to stick with that for now, which isn't any sort of punishment apart from the finances involved Hmm

Enid, I think you're probably right to see the connection. Warmer weather increases oil production and those with oily skin (or internal inflammation) already run warmer which makes them acne prone. Have those who are struggling with the Frezyderm tried applying it in two thinner layers, leaving a bit of time (5 mins or so) in between to let it set properly? And are you using it enough, I once forgot to apply the second layer so only had 3 or 4 pumps on and it went quite shiny quite quickly with it, didn't feel like it was 'sitting' properly as a result either.

mintmagnummm · 11/06/2018 21:05

Notifer just to confirm frezyderm does indeed go on last after everything but in your first message you said that you use frezyderm then moisturiser.

Bo Yep I have tried layers and definitely using enough 5-7 pumps

JDSTER · 11/06/2018 21:33

Very elegant olli and if that’s your hair slightly ruined Envy.....

Thanks bo. I think I’ll order some medik 8 crystal. They’ve reformulated some of their products and repackaged them all. They are advocating a “clean core philosophy” of CSA. Vit C in the morning, Sunscreen and Vit A (ie retinoid) at night. Not suitable for everyone, especially with sensitivities, but otherwise a good philosophy.

Nofilter · 11/06/2018 22:06

Thanks mint I’ve rather confused myself. Grin

TantricTwist · 11/06/2018 23:09

Yeah sorry Bo bit naff but all I could come up within 2 minutes of searching, till I got bored of Crystal.

mintmagnummm · 12/06/2018 06:10

Nofilter why do I lope calling you notifier 😂😂 so sorry! And yes you rather confused me too Grin

mintmagnummm · 12/06/2018 06:10

Wtf is lope?? Obviously I meant keep! Think I'm losing my marbles 🙄
