Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

JDSTER the Sanskrit stuff is fine, I use it in the morning (yes it does smell a bit like coffee!) and it's quite innocuous/harmless/non-irritating but nothing special. I'm glad I didn't pay over £30 for it, especially if I'm going to have to chuck it out half full. Did you have the jumbo sized one and did you use it all up in 6 months?

My EPP order is on its way, so I'll have my LRP hydrating cleanser soon but was going to keep that for night, is it ok to use in the morning as well?

And if anyone orders the GOW Vit c I'd be very interested in a review on the texture, as usual I'm after a watery, non-sticky serum. I've got on fine with the Active formulas one (like the texture, no irritation) but not sure it's actually doing much.

TantricTwist · 05/06/2018 22:19

JDSTER good to hear that you used it without any side effects, be nice to use something different for a change in the mornings.

I have so many products right now lying around waiting to be tried out. I'm glad I know now exactly what suits my skin so I can experiment a bit with new products to mix things up.

TantricTwist · 05/06/2018 22:20

Miffy I heard that the DE Vit C is really oily is that correct?

JDSTER · 05/06/2018 22:53

sallie I cant remember if it was jumbo sized one. I had it on the go longer than 6 months but I don’t think it matters much for that cleanser. I’m not suggesting having things hanging around for years but a couple of months here and there doesn’t matter. I’m not talking Vit C before anyone jumps in Grin. LRP cleanser fine for the morning. Also interested to try GOW Vit C next.

EnidButton · 05/06/2018 23:22

Nooo JD! Travesty! Why must they fiddle with things when they're perfect? 😩 I might actually complain about it like a sad 'Annoyed of Suffolk' type daily fail reader. Seriously.

Ooh I forgot I have an ice cream maker that came with my KitchenAid. You've reminded me bo. I must try it out soon.

For migraine and neck pain sufferers, this ice gel pack from Boots has worked wonders tonight www.boots.com/boots-hot-cold-compress-10117904 It stays squidgy even after being in the freezer for hours so good for forehead, or base of skull/neck which is where I have it right now. Had awful pain in neck, jaw and temples all day and it's really really helped. (That and a mini massage by saint DH 💗) Highly recommend. Think it will be good for period cramps when heated too.

SophieLion · 06/06/2018 07:18

Miffy, Irish friends here have confirmed that brown bread ice cream is indeed delicious! One thinks the brown bread bits might be caramelised (which looks to be the case from the recipe you sent - must try it).

I guess I should stop de-railing the thread now but I don't actually have anything skincare related to talk about. My routine is very boring. (Although I would LOVE to try liquorice ice cream Enid)

JDSTER. -what is mastic mud? Mastika or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Flowers Enid for the toothache. Not nice.

ChesterBelloc · 06/06/2018 07:33

My husband will be in the US soon on business, so I'm going to ask him to get me a couple of bottles of the Cerave PM lotion Grin as it's much cheaper over there. As you say, bo, it still doesn't seem to be officially stocked over here yet.

My next Very Important Question is - what else should I request from the States?!? Preferably at the cheaper end of the spectrum, as I'll be trialling things for the first time.

botemp · 06/06/2018 09:08

Ice cream, Chester Grin

My list of US beauty buys isn't all that expansive. I think the LRP Toleriane double repair is worth looking at but it's similar to Cerave PM so I'd get one or the other. Some get the LRP Toleriane hydrating cleanser from there. I've been looking at amlactin body lotion for my KP but beyond the very pricey Drunk Elephant there's little else in the US that beckons.

Here's the recipe for the chocolate ganache ice cream, Enid. It tastes a lot better than it looks on that site... Hope the tooth is doing better today Flowers

No frogs, Sallie! This is Freddo aka ice cream heaven on earth. I'd happily get on the long haul flight for that ice cream alone Blush

Bo over here Freddo is a chocolate shaped frog Grin your Freddo ice-cream, however, looks delicious.

My skin feels amazingly smooth having used the mastic last night followed by my Clarins lotus oil, I decided to play it safe, I'm loving my Clarins oil at the moment.

SophieLion · 06/06/2018 13:10

I've googled mastic mud masks and they are from the mastika tree from the Greek island of Chios. I personally can't stand the smell or taste of mastika (there's an alcoholic drink, sweets, body products etc^^ etc) but happy to hear that Greece has provided another beauty product that you seem to enjoy Smile

Pupsiecola · 06/06/2018 17:31

Thanks for the heads up about the cold compress Enid. I've ordered one and paid with my Boots points :-)

To whoever asked, I don't find the DE Vit C any more oily than the others I've used (apart from TO).

I much prefer the Cerave night time moisturiser to the LRP.

I've started an early morning bootcamp and am feeling pretty darned good, if a little tired. It's a brilliant concept. Monday to Friday, 45 minutes, 6 week course. FB group which is small and manageable and a real sense of team spirit and community. After the 6 weeks you have a week off and then you start over again. Monday we did core, Tuesday was cardio, today was strength, tomorrow is boxing/combat, Friday is a mixture of all of them. HIIT style, working in teams. I am loving it. I am having to really adapt to a new schedule. I am so not a morning person, and I tend to stay up far too late. So, my new routine is alarm goes off at 6.15am and I'm doing the 6.45am class. (A friend does the 5.15am class, and in another location (it's a small local franchise) there's even a 4.30am class!!! Anyway, I have been forcing myself to get to bed by 10.30 (as opposed to around midnight).

EnidButton · 06/06/2018 18:09

Hope it helps Pupsie. I've been using damp cold flannels but they go warm too quickly and then I forget they're wet and put them on the bed...🙄 This feels like it'll come in handy for lots of things.

EnidButton · 06/06/2018 18:10

I'm doing the 6.45am class.

😲 Seriously impressed!

TantricTwist · 06/06/2018 18:14

Wow Pupsie thats some serious dedication you have going on for a 6.45am class. I am not a morning person and could never achieve that so well done and I'm guessing it helps having a whole new set of friends from it to train with, sounds like it will be fun

TantricTwist · 06/06/2018 18:16

Bo for you

Chocolate Freddo

EnidButton · 06/06/2018 18:47

Mystery rash time. I thought I'd have a bath in some moisturising stuff, body scrub tomorrow, shave etc on Friday. Get my body prepped for the weekend. Got out of the bath and I have a rash on my thighs and lower groin/belly area. How dare it. It's flat and dotty. Not itchy or anything, just unsightly. Annoyed anyway, as I don't know the cause. Ate wheat at the weekend but that's all I can think of.

Back is a bit spotty too which hardly ever happens but I'm putting that down to heat and stress.

miffy2 · 06/06/2018 18:50

Good on you, Pupsie! I did a 6.15 class for about 6 months, ironically I found it easier to get up early in the winter months than when it got brighter.

Have since joined a new gym that is smaller and also closer to my house. They offer 6.00 am, 6.45am and evening classes but since my kids have finished school now I am fine to make it to the evening class. Loving being back working out with weights.

mintmagnummm · 06/06/2018 18:50

Enid my rash is all over neck and part of face so I'll swap u!

Pupsiecola · 06/06/2018 19:40

Thanks guys. Have to say I'm leaping out of bed with a new sense of purpose. I'm luck to work part time and flexibly. My kids are young teens and walk to school. I was in a habit of walking around 7 then spending half an hour on my phone in bed. I felt like I was being a lazy moo. By 10 this morning I'd got all sorts of chores done before heading into work.

Miffy I will try to incorporate some weights sessions in the garage gym and a run per week but without overtraining. Today at bootcamp we did a sort of metabolic conditioning circuit. I have already been doing that at home as it's really efficient (and bloody hard!).

Yep Tantric they have nights out and do events together too. I think I'm gonna love it.

EnidButton · 06/06/2018 19:41

I am footner-ing.

SophieLion · 06/06/2018 19:49

Hi Pupsie, the boot camp sounds great and it's always good to get exercising out of the way first thing.
What do you mean by "metabolic conditioning circuit"? Examples of some exercises you do?

TantricTwist · 06/06/2018 19:55

I had to get a passport photo done today and I still have a rash on my neck from Vit C, which will now haunt me for the next 10 years

TantricTwist · 06/06/2018 20:03

My exercise today was pushing a wheelchair (with someone in it) along the seafront for a couple of hours, my legs feel nice and achy, so I know I got a decent work out.

I volunteer and take residents out who aren't mobile, and as I love walking for miles I'll take them for as long as we both want and we have a cup of tea or lunch depending on what time of day it is.

It was lovely and sunny today and I got a nice hug at the end of it.
