Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

nofilter note there’s serums with the ingredients bo mentioned and a specific rosacea regime

JDSTER · 09/06/2018 09:34

Apologies for triple post

mint I’m also considering the GoW eye serum

botemp · 09/06/2018 09:36

Wayne Goss also did a video on GOW yesterday. When he did this with the Ordinary it all sold out and it started that perpetually out of stock problem Shock

Plenty of PA in that video against TO again. . Not a fan of BT's conduct at all and I have no idea (nor am I interested) what caused the breakdown between TO and VH but it's all getting a bit tasteless.

It's been a while since I last used DHC, JDSTER, I sort of remember it being a bit too effective, as in useful if you wear more heavy duty makeup. I switched to Muji for economics sake as the DHC was always quite expensive but German Amazon offers the DHC quite cheaply so it's cheaper than the Muji now. The Edenens is great too and cheapish (it's only 125ml) but only really of interest if I need a large order from France.

Ok do I need the DHC oil?? Is it good alternative to the ttdo balm?? If so which one are u using as I believe there's a few??
JDSTER which one of us is going to cave in and order the eye serum first I wonder.....

mintmagnummm · 09/06/2018 09:56

My skin playing up at mo, lots of red spots on neck and face but it's that time of the month for me at mo my cycle is in the 30+ days at mo.

My eyes are also extra sensitive at the moment, very stingy and watery!

JDSTER · 09/06/2018 10:47

I’m not even going to watch that Wayne Video- can’t be doing with him!

mint DHC oil different to ttdo in that you apply the oil, massage in and rinse. It effectively removes make up and doesn’t leave a film, despite being an oil. Obviously you need a cloth with ttdo. Amazon sell sample size bottles (yellow coloured oil- I’m not aware there’s different types).

bo I know you’re not a fan of supplements but I wondered what you thought of biotin for improving hair?

@EnidButton could you link to olaplex dupe you’ve used from amazon please? Want to put an order in. Had highlights yesterday

mintmagnummm · 09/06/2018 10:54

So I could use this before jumping in shower then rinse rather than using flannel? Then go on to my avene extremely gentle cleanser?

JDSTER · 09/06/2018 10:57

Yes, that’s the one mint and yes you would rinse, not use flannel. Follow with your Avene (I follow with LRP)

mintmagnummm · 09/06/2018 10:57

Great thank you I'll give this a try.

botemp · 09/06/2018 11:07

JDSTER, biotin is pretty notorious for causing horrific acne so I'd take a swerve. You can look into drinking silica gel (Hubner is a good brand), seems to be getting the most backing by the medical community these days for improving hair and nails (rather than just growth) and it's fairly innocuous as an ingredient.

You need to do it consistently though, supposedly good for (skin) dehydration too. My gynaecologist suggested it a while ago but I've never got round to it. Was a bit put off by having to keep it refrigerated and it needs to be taken between meals, I'm not sure how good I'd be at remembering to take that consistently, especially on days not working from home.

I'm tried the DHC oil and really liked it, felt super clean after using it but my skin doesn't seem to like olive oil so I got a few big red spots! Had to stop using it. I was also using a flannel with it, as I don't feel like I washed my face unless I do Smile.

@mintmagummm I find my Frezyderm really affects my eyes, are you using it? I use my Avene spf near my eyes and Frezyderm on the rest of my face. When I wash my face at night I'm careful to keep my eyes tightly shut and wash round them first before the rest of my face to prevent any product going in my eyes. My eyes are so sensitive!

mintmagnummm · 09/06/2018 11:58

Violet yes I am using frezyderm but it's only one eye that's bad so I don't think it can be my spf, plus if it was it would happen very day. I think it may be my mascara!

I hope my skin likes olive oil!!!

SallieSallow · 09/06/2018 12:05

I've used DHC oil before and it did give me spots but that was ages ago before I knew about double cleansing Blush so suspect that was the issue rather than the oil itself.

Talking of cleansing, I've found an alpha h cleansing balm in my stash that must have come in a set or GWP with their eye gel as it's a fairly small size. It's been years since I've used a cleansing balm, am I right in thinking it would be a first cleanse only?

And my EPP order has landed so LRP cleanser will be tested tonight.

Voilet I have sensitive eyes and have no trouble with frezyderm but due to my reptilian like body temperature I don't really get hot or sweaty so I don't have the issue with it running or migrating.

mintmagnummm · 09/06/2018 12:11

Bo do you have any thoughts on the gow eye contour serum?

Shop · 09/06/2018 14:25

I ordered the GOW eye serum a couple of days ago, it arrived yesterday. Tried it last night, it’s nice so far but obviously difficult to tell after one use.
I also ordered the azelaic Acid to try once my current tube if skinoren has finished. It would be good if it works as I have to get skinoren from the boots acne clinic and Victoria health is much quicker and easier.

I really like DHC oil, in fact when I used to try lots of different things all the time I could always rely on DHC if I got any spots not to make them worse or cause any more.

mintmagnummm · 09/06/2018 14:56

Shop I've used the azelaic acid twice now and first impressions are good.

Very close to ordering the eye serum

mintmagnummm · 09/06/2018 15:24

Ok I couldn't contain myself any longer! I've caved and ordered the eye serum! Got scared that the Wayne goss vid would make it sell out (that's my excuse anyway lol) is it just me who finds Wayne annoying??!!

JDSTER · 09/06/2018 16:34

Grinmint I knew you’d cave in and get eye serum. Let me know what you think. I’m using up a NIOD sample of eye serum so not in a rush. I also find him irritating which is why I said I wouldn’t be checking out his video.

mintmagnummm · 09/06/2018 16:54

JDSTER I'm so predictable aren't I 😂.

BagelGoesWalking · 09/06/2018 17:31

I did watch Wayne Goss's video. Almost exactly the same as a year or so ago when he was waxing lyrical about TO. I much prefer people like Gothamista who explain why things might work, not just "these are great so go out and buy it". He also kept saying Victoria's Health when it's Victoria Health. Stupid, I know, but annoying.

Violet18 · 09/06/2018 17:39

@mintmagnummm I did exactly the same thing... worried about the GOW selling out and ordered the niacinamide this morning! I've been dithering for about a week!

Re the DHC I did use it as a first cleanse followed by Toleriane Dermo as my second. The reason I thought it was that causing the spots was due to me reacting to olive oil in my mid-twenties when I tried pure olive oil as a cleanser to try to 'go more natural' and ending up with big red spots!

Next in my list is a step up on the retinol. Now I've used LRP Redermic-R eyes which is 0.6% I'm tempted to get the Medik8 6TR rather than the 3TR. I'm still deciding. As mentioned previously I've been using PC skin balancing serum with 0.03% so would be a big step. More mulling I think....

Violet18 · 09/06/2018 17:48

@SallieSallow yeah the Frezyderm is a weird one with my eyes. It's when I put it anywhere in the contour (never on the upper lid). I do have oily skin and eye lids randomly, so I figure it's just migrating. So painful though, as in not just a bit of a sting, it's painful when I move my eyeball IYKWIM! I had really stubborn ezcema on my eye lids a few years ago from trialling eyeshadows for my wedding, so I've got to be overly cautious.

I do love it though, especially under makeup

SallieSallow · 09/06/2018 18:11

I don't like Wayne Goss much either, I did watch the video and found him annoying, he is very much a 'go and buy it' type rather than providing useful information.

Violet I have oily skin and watery eyes so think I've got lucky with the frezyderm, I use it right up to the lash line and on my eyelids too. I've reacted to eye creams, shadows, eye makeup removers etc that are actually meant to be applied to those areas but oddly enough I've never had problems with spfs.

miffy2 · 09/06/2018 18:23

I have mixed feelings about Wayne Goss. His product-based videos are verrrry close to looking sponsored yet he rarely declares any affiliation. However is 'tricks' videos are usually quite good with good tips for hooded eyes, concealer, older skin etc. He often debunks 'insta' makeup traditions and other stereotypical makeup myths.
