Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Have I ordered the right thing?!

🐌 Fantastic Skincare: Tiny Lovely People who Live in your Phone and Tell You to Buy Frezyderm Velvet Face SPF50
mintmagnummm · 08/06/2018 16:29

Pupsie I could be wrong but I believe that's the face wash version rather than the milk/lotion one

Pupsiecola · 08/06/2018 18:29

Thanks Mint. I thought I'd ordered the cream, and it is creamy in texture, although the directions on the back say to lather. I thought they might have just changed the packaging Confused

botemp · 08/06/2018 18:42

Pupsie, if you meant to buy the Toleriane hydrating cleanser than that is the correct one. I think I remember linking that for you at EPP when you couldn't find it?

OP posts:
mintmagnummm · 08/06/2018 18:46

Has anyone here used rapid lash?

Violet18 · 08/06/2018 18:54

Ah you just reminded me I need to order the GOW Niacinamide from VH. Good to know they do speedy delivery.

Did wonder about the PC Nia booster, but no sample sizes and I'm reluctant to spend ££ without trying it first. Especially since the strength is 10%.

Ollivander84 · 08/06/2018 19:21

Two bargains today
May coop morning dew mist - 50ml for £3
Aqua hyaluronic acid water drop cream - £5!

Pupsiecola · 08/06/2018 19:27

Yes that's right Bo. I've just used it, for the first and last time. The same strong prickling sensation as I got using the Cerave cleanser. I need to cross check ingredients and find out what it could be. It's a huge bottle. I guess I will try it in the shower...

mintmagnummm · 08/06/2018 19:53

Pupsie would you consider trying the avene extremely gentle cleanser again? As I said before it's a new formula and I couldn't use the old one! (I think it was you who said you didn't like it years ago?)

SallieSallow · 08/06/2018 20:17

Thanks Bo that GOW Vit c sounds promising and it's a good price too, I'll wait for a further review before I order given my less than positive history with Vit c.

Pupsie I've got that LRP cleanser on it's way from EPP, think I should be fine with it as long as it's not fragranced as herby planty flowery things seem to make me itchy. Just hoping it isn't a bit too creamy but should be ok for 2nd cleanse at night.

Mint I'm using rapidbrow, it's very slow going but I've had a bit of regrowth so shall persist. And it's got a hard job on its hands with me as I had no hairs at all at the tops and tails of my brows. I think Enid has used rapidlash and liked it.

Pupsiecola · 08/06/2018 20:41

Mint I used Avene a few months ago and you're right. I didn't like it. I felt it left a film. Has it changed very recently? Thank you for thinking of me.

I'm using Rapid Brow too and am getting slow but steady results.

mintmagnummm · 08/06/2018 20:57

Thanks Sallie and pupsie I may try it, not sure yet.

Pupsie I'm not sure how recently it was reformulated but I'm on my 3rd bottle I think so must be at least 6 months ago?? It definitely doesn't leave a film though, not even slightly (on me anyway)

JDSTER · 08/06/2018 21:07

pupsie shame about the LRP cleanser. Is it niacinamide you can’t tolerate?
sallie I find it a great second cleanser at night.

Nofilter · 08/06/2018 21:48

Hello Ladies!

I wondered if you could give me any advice?

I’ve spent years wasting money on Clarins and am a mum now with less spare income.

I really love my Embrolysse moisturiser after being recommended it by a French makeup artist - it’s cheap enough I get the lighter one 500ml.

I use Elemis Lavendar cleaner twice daily.

Could you recommend a pocket friendly exfoliating serum at all?

And is there such a thing as an spf I can add in to my routine as my moisturiser doesn’t have it?

Thanks xx

EnidButton · 08/06/2018 22:13

Hi nofilter 👋🏻

Mint I use rapid lash (and rapid brow) and really love it. You have to keep using it or they go back to normal, that's the main downside. But it has really worked for me. Took about 6 weeks to start but once it did, they really grew. I actually had to trim a couple of them as they were touching my brows! You do have to be very patient at first though and you have to apply it every single night. It's worked too well if anything as now I don't want to go back and it's a bit spendy.

Also, there's a point where they are perfect and then they start growing in directions that they shouldn't before they fall out (as they would anyway, just at a later stage). That can be annoying although it only happens every 2 months or so.

SallieSallow · 08/06/2018 22:16

Hello Nofilter 👋

Spf wise you definitely need one at this time of year and will need it even more if you're starting on exfoliating (actives and acids) products.

A number of us here like frezyderm spf50 it's linked on the very first post on this thread by Botemp and it's also now Mumsnet recommended Grin it's like a primer rather than a moisturiser, and works well under makeup if you wear it.

With regards to the serum I think we'd need to know a bit more about your skin type, concerns, any sensitivities etc before recommending anything but definitely get your spf lined up first Smile

JDSTER I'm still nervous about The Dreaded Film but I'm taking your word for it that there won't be one Grin

EnidButton · 08/06/2018 22:17

Should say they don't all fall out! Just the wonky ones that are at maximum length. It's worth a go anyway if you don't mind waiting.

I've decided the few spots on my back are down to eating wheat last weekend as I also have a couple on my face and a bit of thrush. Both are often caused by wheat intolerance for me. So I've washed my back using the LRP and then a bit of hibi scrub and a dot or two of zineryt. They are just tiny red dot type spots but I've bought some dresses with low backs that I want to wear soon. Typical when I never get spots there usually. Should go soon though.

JDSTER · 08/06/2018 22:23

Don’t be nervous sallie Grin. I’m oilier than most on here I think, and I’m sensitive to ‘a film’.

nofilter sallie* is right- we really need a bit more info from you before we recommend any products. We’re a rigorous lot! Have you read the documents linked on first page of this thread?

Nofilter · 09/06/2018 03:22

Hi,

Thanks for the responses! I shall buy the SPF cream linked in the thread that sounds perfect as it’s also like a primer.

How do I check if my cleanser (Elemis Lavender) is the right one? The sheet mentions an oil one?

My skin is combination. Have blackheads on my nose and quite large pores, rosacia on both cheeks and sides of nose. On the whole I’ve lovely clear skin. I’d say it’s dehydrated (can see on my cheeks where there are tiny lines and a therapist told me this is dehydration) rather than oily...

id Like to start a routine that includes some of the more modern products and benefit from the results really. It’s quite dull my skin really and I’ve not exfoliated in years so could definitely do with some attention!

Thanks ;-)

mintmagnummm · 09/06/2018 06:41

Thanks Enid 👍🏻

botemp · 09/06/2018 07:12

Welcome, Nofilter. Assuming the Rosacea is diagnosed, you should be avoiding all common irritants like essential oils, fragrance, etc. I haven't looked up your cleanser but regardless as to whether it's an oil based one or not, by the name alone it sounds to contain esssential oils and/or fragrance.

I'd never recommend a daily exfoliating product to someone with Rosacea, once a fortnight at most but best to just leave it. All it does is make you more susceptible to irritation and make products you tolerate well otherwise, irritating. You want to contain the Rosacea as much as possible, 'playing with actives' only opens you up to more imbalance and risk progression of the Rosacea.

Most actives are off the table when considering Rosacea, though you may be helped with BHA as that's one of the few actives that helps with the inflammation associated with Rosacea and blackheads. Azelaic acid would be another option. Technically they are chemical exfoliators by they are very mild, I wouldn't recommend using them more than twice a week and start using it just once a week for a dedicated period of time.

Get a moisturiser with barrier repair ingredients (niacinamide, ceramides, fatty acids, etc.) to help tackle the dehydration. You can also try the Simply Pure Hydrating serum by superdrug as this has both humectants to treat the dehydration in the moment and a few barrier repair ingredients. I'd recommend reading through the barrier repair sheet for more info.

Ok I'm now really considering ordering the GOW eye serum! Should I???

Sali Hughes on SPF today:-

botemp · 09/06/2018 09:15

Ahem, she failed to mention the Frezyderm...

I tried that Vichy body water one the other day, didn't like it at all. It's light and indeed water-like when applying but it has the same claggy SPF feeling once you rub it in and it was such a fine mist at only SPF30 which made it pretty impossible to know how much to use. I'll stick to my Suncover one which is just silky when rubbed in and then undetectable.

My A313 arrived yesterday, hurray for the French and a speedy arrival! Wasn't expecting it for at least a week by their usual standards. It does seem quite effective (using it on the body), no irritation but it definitely felt 'active'. My KP does look a lot calmer this morning, but that may just be wishful thinking.

Also got the DHC cleansing oil delivered, tried it on a full face of Frezyderm last night and it does do a good job of removing that. I remember it being a bit more strippy but it's not, or my skin is just better equipped against it now

OP posts:
JDSTER · 09/06/2018 09:26

I have a full size bottle of DHC bo after having sample sizes and I like it. It does an excellent job.
