Kate's dress - Stockholm visit

Your thought please.
I think she normally dresses very well but this looks like her suitcase was lost in transit and somebody in the Palace in Stockholm very kindly offered to run her up a dress from curtains ( a la The Sound of Music ) that they were donating to a charity shop.

It's very loud isn't it? Seems an odd style choice for an event where everyone else looks quite conservatively dressed (as she is normally too). I agree that the dress overwhelms her, although it might be OK as a blouse. It's also a bit appropriative. I bought my dd a second hand cheongsam dress recently and although she looks great (plain green with patterning only, no OTT flowers) she's not sure it's OK to wear not having any Chinese links herself, and when we did a bit of research there were quite a few people who aren't happy about the way that Asian styles have been adopted recently. In this case the pattern would have been better staying on the screens really.

happychange · 31/01/2018 01:01

I love the dress!
I immediately recognised it as Erdem and his dresses are gorgeous especially when you see it close up
They are so beautifully designed
I think this looks great on her

DarthArts · 31/01/2018 02:23

I really like it.

I think it's very sophisticated and elegant.

DarthArts · 31/01/2018 02:25

Does anyone else think William's trousers are too short?

KittyB52 · 31/01/2018 05:41

I love the colour, material and pattern but the style is all over the place. The sleeves are weird and the excess of frills does nothing for her. Also, her make up looked a bit ‘off’ - far too harsh/‘done’ but she does love her eyeliner.
It is great to see her wearing something a bit different, and so nice to see a bit of colour.

Princess Victoria looked much more comfortable and happy in her black dress, but it didn’t seem to fit her well.

And yes, Prince William’s trousers look too short. Grin

NorthernLurker · 31/01/2018 07:29

If Williams trousers are too short the. Maybe their luggage really did get lost Grin

PrizePig · 31/01/2018 07:30

Its awful. Hate this fashion for frills but the pattern! Jeez, my eyes Grin

papayasareyum · 31/01/2018 07:42

the colour washes her out and makes her look ill. She always has such beautiful skin and colouring, that dress is vile

QueenOfTheAndals · 31/01/2018 07:44

@MikeUniformMike She did, but they were very much of the time and fashionable for the era. The Queen and Princess Margaret's 50s and 60s gowns have actually aged better than Diana's 80s outfits, although none of the younger Royal women would fit into those as they were both very petite with incredibly tiny waists.

SamanthaBrique · 31/01/2018 07:46

@papayasareyum I'm not sure she has such beautiful skin though - I think the rumours about her enjoying a cigarette are true and it does show on her skin a bit. Now Diana really did have a wonderful complexion, and those were the days before photoshop!

Roystonv · 31/01/2018 07:52

I'm with snowgirl and others just too much, that lovely rich patterned material does not need the arm and bottom frills. Change those to just a plain sleeve and a natural fall to the ground and you have a winner.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 31/01/2018 07:55

I’m not bothered by the frill, it’s just that the dress can go frumpy easily, it would be great on someone with a big of an edge, but Kate isn’t that sort of person so it has gone frumpy.

Oblomov18 · 31/01/2018 07:55

It's really bad. But then, presumably she does get bored of wearing the same old classy stuff, and just wants to break free? Hmm

LizardMonitor · 31/01/2018 08:00

It looks like a mash up of everything that has been disastrous at M&S over the last year.

I think it is an ironic response to Meghan, who wore a M&S item on a public appearance recently.

octonaught · 31/01/2018 08:01

Its the sort of thing Meghan could get away with

Williams trousers are way too short.
Also why does he not wear his Jacket buttoned up?

The smartest person in that lineup was Prince Daniel
(Princess victoria's dress was lovely down to the shins. But the black tights & Tbar shoes did not work. She needed bare legs & a sandal type thing with that length

OldBlueStitches · 31/01/2018 08:01

Overall I think it looks good on her - but not in that photo. The colour and shine don't work with bright camera flashes.

Not a really fan of frills and/or fluted sleeves but apparently we're going to be seeing more of them.

Interestingly earlier in the day her Swedish counterpart was in a very floral number.

Sevendown · 31/01/2018 08:08

They both look so uncomfortable

AuntieStella · 31/01/2018 08:11

I saw it in BBC Breakfast when she was sitting down. It looked a heck of a lot better than when standing straight to camera - possibly because the pattern was less strident as the material folded.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 31/01/2018 08:18

I’m sure we had a carpet with that pattern in the 70s.

NewYearNiki · 31/01/2018 09:40

It looks worse in light. Yellow rather than gold. Hideous.

Frankiewears · 31/01/2018 10:00

Woah! That is truly manky. Colour, pattern and design are atrocious.

Princess Charlene - now that woman knows how to dress and edge things up just enough.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 31/01/2018 10:06

It’s not her Swedish counterpart, OldBlue , more like William’s or Charles’.

Frankiewears · 31/01/2018 10:07

Often simple, clean lines are more striking....

SamanthaBrique · 31/01/2018 11:02

@Frankiewears, that haircut is just amazing on Charlene. Mary of Denmark and Letizia of Spain have great style too, as does Rania of Jordan who manages to do conservative yet stylish without a hint of frump.

I quite liked her houndstooth coat and white dress from this morning - it must be a cut of the dress, but she suddenly looks several months more pregnant than she did yesterday!

Iwantamarshmallow · 31/01/2018 11:09

that’s exactly what I thought when I saw it. I wouldn’t agree she normally looks good. I think she dresses way to old and a bit frumpy for her age
