What does v short hair say about a woman?

Just that really. I was having my (very short) hair cut yesterday and my hairdresser and I were talking and she said that she thought that women with short hair had to be very confident because they had nothing to 'hide behind' and that short hair suggested self assurance to her. I've never thought of myself as self assured so found this really interesting...so, whether you have short hair or not, what does very short hair say to you about a woman?

I'd think she's picked something that suits her at the time.
Although, the 'having time to go to the hairdresser' thing may not be accurate. Mine's short but I cut it myself. I know a handful of women who do.

AlternativeTentacle · 25/09/2017 08:27

Long hair = femininity

That is where you are going wrong love.

Long hair isn't 'feminine'. The only thing that is feminine is having female reproductive organs. I hope that helps you in your complete and utter misunderstanding of the fucking basics.

Auburn2001 · 25/09/2017 08:39

I think:
'She likes short hair'
'She knows what suits her'
'She wants something practical that works for her'
'It is always fecking windy and rainy and this ruins long loose hair. Much more fun to have funky short hair.' Grin

LoniceraJaponica · 25/09/2017 08:40

There are plenty of boys at DD's school with long hair. Does this make them gay/feminine/trans? Hmm

Squashit · 25/09/2017 08:42

I would also like to point out that you do not need petite/gamine features etc to pull off short hair and all that other old bunkum spouted on here. It can look fantastic on a beautiful, characterful face too.

Tamsin Greig looks so much better with a pixie.

You do not need any particular features to pull off short hair. What you need are other people to stop being judgemental.

Squashit · 25/09/2017 08:48

That was my point 🙂

PandorasXbox · 25/09/2017 09:21

I love short hair. I go from periods of having it short then get bored and grow it then have it short again.

However when it's short I like to be slim as being even a bit overweight can make me feel a bit frumpy. The colour when it's short also has to be taken in to account.

AuldAlliance · 25/09/2017 09:42

Jeepers.

What do long dangly earrings mean?
What do black shoes mean?
What do short fingernails mean?
What does a woolly scarf mean?
What does a polo neck mean?
What do sunglasses mean?

Anything and nothing?

That some women are conditioned to be critical and judgmental of others, and would benefit from taking a step back and wondering about that conditioning...?

If long hair didn't = femininity, (on a superficial level ) why do boys/ men have, in 99% of cases, short hair? & why do butch lesbians cut their hair short? because they're trying to look masculine.
Of course not every woman with very short hair is a lesbian, most older women have short hair, but a certain look gives off signals - especially when you're young(er)
Does it really matter?

Oh dear god. Do you really believe this bullshit? I have short hair because as a gardener it got in my face. Not because I like licking other women's genitals. You really are pathetic.

Does it really matter?

Obviously to you it does otherwise you wouldn't think that women with short hair are butch lesbians.

surferjet · 25/09/2017 10:33

I think that's a bit graphic for 10.30 on a Monday morning. < clutches pearls >
Sorry if I've offended you Flowers genuinely.

SerfTerf · 25/09/2017 10:37

You can talk about cunnilingus I'm as much graphic detail as you like as far as I'm concerned.

The endless repetition of "bitch lesbian innit?" is far more offensive. I can't believe wanderings post is still up.

1DAD2KIDS · 25/09/2017 10:49

I grew up with bands like Skunk Anansie. The lead singer was a beautiful woman by the stage name Skin (pictured). A beautifully structured face that is beautifully highlighted in absence of hair.

I can't believe how many people on this thread equate short hair basically ONLY with (butch) lesbians and/or giving up taking care of yourself... Wow. Really?! Speechless.

yetanotherdeskmove · 25/09/2017 10:58

Fuck me this thread is depressing.

I have short hair because it suits me. I have a small face (wear glasses from the teen range) and a lot of hair. my hairdresser jokes that it's triangular when it needs a cut. I had it longer for years because I'd been conditioned to think all of the shite above about how short hair isn't feminine etc. I had the worlds dullest bob for years but then I got to my late 30s and woke up.

My hair looks way better now that it ever has before, it's been short for about 5 years now all it says about me is that I have found a style that suits my face and hair.

Yesyesyesyeswhatever · 25/09/2017 11:03

I recommend that the prejudiced travel around a bit. Their views would cast something like 40% of the women in my country as butch lesbians/given up. Some are and some have, which is completely ok, of course, but to draw that kind of lazy, stereotypical conclusions, of what is nearly nearly half the female population, is ridiculous....

PickAChew · 25/09/2017 11:15

My thick, coarse, wavy hair is hard to style whatever the length. It definitely looks better short, even on a wild and wavy day (sometimes I think to hell with it and scrunch dry it with some curl mousse!) than long and crystal tips - ish, though - and my scalp was dreadful when it was long. I also have a strong chin and hooked nose, which long, wavy hair does nothing to play down. Since my mid 20s, I've varied between big hair bob and very short. Very short doesn't suit me any more - it's become ageing on me, even compared with 5 years ago, so I have more length on top, with an eyebrow length fringe and I currently have it slightly stacked at the back.

I couldn't give a shit if anyone thinks I'm a lesbian. Is that meant to be an insult? Fuck knows.

KarateKitten · 25/09/2017 11:17

It says that it suits their face.

PickAChew · 25/09/2017 11:19

And yes, Tamsin Greig illustrates my point perfectly! We have some very similar features and hair type. (Only she's tall and gorgeous and I'm more of a shortase with a collapsed neck, which makes the long hair effect even worse on me!)

MrsApplepants · 25/09/2017 11:42

I have a bleach blonde pixie cut. My hair is naturally dark, think and wavy, neither nice curls or straight. It's coarse textured and when longer is the bane of my life. Only a pro blow dry made it look good and I struggled with it for years. Too much hair for my face. A bob looked like a mushroom or frumpsville. It didn't make me feel feminine, it made me feel a mess. I chopped it off, took 10 years off me and I've since had loads of fun with it, trying cool colours and I wish I'd done it years ago. I feel sexier and finally 'me' DH loves it (not that it's up to him but it's a bonus!) I've had tons of compliments on it. It does need cutting every 5 weeks but takes 30 secs in the morning.

What does it say, it's says I like short hair nothing more! Silly comments about lesbians are just that, silly.

EraArils · 25/09/2017 12:38

Long hair makes me miserable. My hair is course and wild and has a mind of its own. The longer it gets the more irritating I find it. My hair grows out and up and not down. I just look crazy with longer hair, its also grey/white so I end up longer like the Doc in Back to the Future.

So, should I embrace this mad hair for the sensibilities of those that think I'm a butch lesbian? No, because those people are a**eholes whose opinions mean nothing to me. I am 'ME' when my hair is shorter and couldn't care less about the views of simple fools.

PickAChew · 25/09/2017 12:52

That's 3 of us in a row with that type of hair!

CountFosco · 25/09/2017 13:00

I was asked by a man at work why I had gone for a punk look when I cut my hair. Admittedly he's a bit socially awkward around women.

@Bluesheep8 I'm beginning to think your hairdresser's comment wasn't too bad having seen some of the comments on here! Unless she was talking in euphemisms.

If I'm now a butch lesbian should I tell DH? What does that make him? He had long hair when we met, does that make him gay? His lesbian sister has long hair. Maybe it's her girlfriend that's butch one but since she has a bob Confused it's not clear. Can 2 feminine lesbians have a relationship? It's all so confusing!

guilty100 · 25/09/2017 13:02

To me, it says that a woman is confident enough to tear up the gender "rulebook" so many are citing. Soooo many people (myself included) have boring, safe hair. And, in part, that's because it's easier to keep playing by the same old rules. I have had short hair in the past, and I've had a lot more (negative) comments from drunk blokes than I do when I have had long hair. There's something about it they find threatening - maybe the independence it connotes.

I have long hair, but currently trying to pluck up courage to have it chopped because I really want to claim that space.
